Exposure to environmental toxicants poses significant harm to humans. However, assessing the risk for diverse human populations is challenging because genetic differences among individuals can cause disparities in toxicant susceptibilities. We will use genetically diverse C. elegans strains (obtained from CaeNDR) isolated from around the world as a model to study how natural variation can affect susceptibility to the widely-used insecticide chlorfenapyr.

Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common cause of birth defects. Hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) is a critical CHD that requires timely intervention. Fetal echocardiography, a key screening tool for CHD, is not performed until the 20 week mark in the second trimester, limiting early detection. Our team aims to enable CHD detection as early as the first trimester.

Metal Extraction Of Regolith By Phytomining, Davonya Cheek
Aerospace, Physics, and Space Science Student Publications
Long-term Lunar and Martian settlements will require sustainable food production to ensure stability and security. Regolith at these sites may serve as a viable substrate for space crop production. However, both regoliths contain heavy metals that are detrimental to plant growth and may bioaccumulate to be toxic to settlers as well.
Hyperaccumulating plants accumulate metals in their roots and shoots by forming metal complexes that store and/or detoxify metal ions absorbed by the plant. Such hyperaccumulators can assist in both phytoremediation and phytomining.
Here, I evaluate the potential of Helianthus annuus (sunflower), a known hyperaccumulator of heavy metals, including lead, …
