Poetry Camera, Julia Piascik

Academic Festival

This project aims to develop a camera that prints AI-written poems about photos taken. The system features a custom-designed 3D-printed case with a battery pack for mobility, a five-inch touch screen to allow the user to see what they are taking a picture of, and a high-quality Raspberry Pi camera for adjustable photos. To allow for different styles of poems, a web application using Flask was created. The Python program utilizes OpenAI and Replicate to analyze the photo taken, create a descriptive caption, and create a poem. The different poem styles include Limerick, Haiku, Standard, Dream-Like, Future, Sonnet, and Acrostic. …

As a team, we decided to make a tactical RPG game inspired by Fire Emblem and other older RPG games for the capstone project. This shows in our 2D-pixel graphics and combat system following a rock-paper-scissors style with three classes. Though our game simplifies a lot of typical RPG mechanics due to time constraints, there is still a focus on the main aspects of gameplay, such as strategy and difficulty of play. Our project aimed to create a basic tactical RPG system and expand on some weaker aspects of the genre. This interest in emulating and improving on work we …

Pioneering Security In The Quantum Era, Maniraj Chahal, Anthony Scardigno Apr 2025

Pioneering Security In The Quantum Era, Maniraj Chahal, Anthony Scardigno

Academic Festival

As quantum computing rapidly evolves, it poses significant threats to classical encryption methods widely used across industries. This paper explores the cybersecurity implications of quantum advancements and presents a proactive strategy for organizations to safeguard their digital infrastructure. By evaluating and comparing leading post-quantum cryptographic algorithms such as, CRYSTALS-Kyber, CRYSTALS-Dilithium, and AES-256, against criteria such as quantum resistance, efficiency, and implementation feasibility, the research identifies optimal solutions for securing both internal and customer-facing systems. The paper concludes with a way to integrate, designed to future-proof organizational operations, maintain regulatory compliance, and strengthen customer trust in the quantum era.

Artificial Intelligence Robotic Arm For Teaching American Sign Language, Julia Piascik Apr 2025

Artificial Intelligence Robotic Arm For Teaching American Sign Language, Julia Piascik

Academic Festival

This project aims to develop a robotic arm that demonstrates American Sign Language (ASL) letters. The system features a custom-designed 3D-printed forearm with thirteen servo motors that allow for various wrist and finger movements, enhancing the dexterity of the arm. To support ASL letter recognition, a dataset was created consisting of letters from A to I, captured against seventeen different colored backgrounds with five to seven variations per letter. A convolutional neural network (CNN) model was then developed using TensorFlow, Keras, and scikit-learn to process the input images and classify them into corresponding ASL letters. The main Python program utilizes …

Decoding Dolphin Dynamics: Observing Object Play Among Bottlenose Dolphins, Samantha Apostolico, Sophia Pertoso, Samantha Gojcaj, Angelika Falandysza, Diego Salles, Deirdre Yeater, Manon Themelin, Kathleen Dudzinski, Heather Manitzas Hill, Rachel Walker Apr 2025

Whereas several studies focused on object play in dolphins, few have examined details about observers, i.e., individuals just watching the play event without participating. It has been suggested that calves and juveniles are more likely to observe others engaging in object play, but not enough evidence has been collected. Object play among bottlenose dolphins at the Roatan Institute for Marine Sciences was documented from 28 sessions recorded underwater. 692 object play events including observers were analyzed, involving 18 dolphins. We expected calf and juvenile dolphins to be the most frequent observers and longer play bouts to attract a greater number …

From Perception To Policy: Integrated Threat, Anti-Transgender Stereotypes, And Political Orientation As Predictors Of Anti-Transgender Voting, Ali Eppinga, Rebecca Totton Apr 2025

From Perception To Policy: Integrated Threat, Anti-Transgender Stereotypes, And Political Orientation As Predictors Of Anti-Transgender Voting, Ali Eppinga, Rebecca Totton

Research Symposium

Prejudiced reactions to the growing number of transgender individuals in the United States have motivated the support and proposal of much legislation that targets and restricts these individuals. Indeed, in the first six months of 2024, already 619 such anti-transgender bills have been proposed in the U.S. (translegislation.com). Integrated threat theory offers a partial explanation for this prejudice, positing that prejudice toward a group is forecasted by a perception of that group as threatening. Within integrated threat theory, this threat is either symbolic (threatening to cultural values, social norms, or personal beliefs) or realistic (threatening to physical safety, financial security, …

Ecology Of Beech Leaf Disease: Identifying The Forest Conditions Correlated With Infection In Northeast Ohio, Blake Logan Apr 2025

Ecology Of Beech Leaf Disease: Identifying The Forest Conditions Correlated With Infection In Northeast Ohio, Blake Logan

Research Symposium

Beech Leaf Disease (BLD) is a novel, poorly-understood threat to forests across North America. Since its discovery in northeast Ohio in 2012, the disease has affected staggering numbers of beech trees (Fagus grandifolia), resulting in increased sapling mortality. In the near future, mortality in symptomatic mature trees is expected to follow. The symptomatic striped leaves result from the activity of the nematode Litylenchus crenatae ssp. mccannii, but the precise role this organism plays in transmission and infection is currently unknown.

Oberlin College has been conducting forest demography research at Chance Creek, a nature preserve in Lorain county, since 1974. Every …

Introversion And Friendship Preferences, Iris Archibald Apr 2025

Introversion And Friendship Preferences, Iris Archibald

Research Symposium

How are friendships formed, and how do we decide which people will become our friends? This study examined if friendship preferences differ based on personality traits, such as introversion, and the consequences that these preferences may have for the formation and maintenance of our social networks.

To test this idea, participants were asked to choose if their friends consisted of people who were involved in a singular/few aspects of their lives or people who were involved in many aspects of their lives. Participants were also asked to indicate how important it would be for them to have many friends, how …
