Resource Guide For Parents: Educational Pamphlet On Safe Bottle Feeding, Emma Jerue

Academic Festival

Safe oral feeding is a critical aspect of neonatal care in the NICU, especially for preterm infants who often lack the neurological maturity to coordinate the suck-swallow-breathe pattern essential for feeding. These infants require developmental support and evidence-based strategies to transition safely to oral feeds. Interventions such as pacing, chin support, and slow-flow bottles have been shown to enhance feeding tolerance and minimize the risk of aspiration. However, inconsistent feeding practices, often rooted in tradition rather than current evidence, can lead to adverse events and extended hospital stays. This project seeks to improve feeding safety and outcomes by implementing standardized, …

Trauma Informed Care: Guiding Principles To Reduce Medical Trauma And Increase Patient Trust In Healthcare Professionals, Alexandra Allan, Kayleigh Sanchez

Academic Festival

Medical trauma has a profound negative impact on patients and their families, physiologically and psychologically. Trauma does not discriminate, it affects people of all genders, races, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Trauma informed care is an intervention that can reduce the risk of medical trauma occurring or retraumatization from happening. The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration defines trauma informed care as, “an organizational structure and treatment framework that involves understanding, recognizing, and responding to the effects of all types of trauma”. In order to actually provide care that abides by a trauma informed approach, six leading principles are followed. These six …

Wander/Elopement Risk Assessment And Protocol For Veterans, Taylor Warburton, Alexandra Rizzo Apr 2025

Wander/Elopement Risk Assessment And Protocol For Veterans, Taylor Warburton, Alexandra Rizzo

Academic Festival

Wandering and elopement are significant safety concerns for veterans in healthcare settings, particularly those with conditions such as traumatic brain injuries (TBI), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), dementia, and sleep disorders. These factors increase the risk of falls, injuries, and exposure to infections. During our capstone clinical experience, we observed a high incidence of patients attempting to leave the unit or engaging in wandering behaviors. As a result, we came up with the idea to create a veteran-specific wander/elopement risk assessment protocol to ensure early identification of at-risk patients and the implementation of appropriate interventions. The assessment will categorize patients based …

Synthesis And Characterization Of Pyridine Alkoxide-Ligated Metal Complexes, Madison Updike, Taylor Nowak, Kavya Mattam

Academic Festival

The pyridine alkoxide ligand “pyalk” is an important structure in organometallic chemistry and has been ligated to several transition metals, most notably iridium and copper. These metal complexes have been remarkably active in water oxidation catalysis reactions, which are important for the development of artificial photosynthesis technologies. Despite its activity and relatively simple structure, the potential of pyalk-derived ligands has not been fully explored. The synthesis of a novel suite of pyridine alkoxide ligands may enable the further development of highly efficient and sustainable first-row transition metal catalysts. These ligands are based on the known pyalk scaffold and include variations …

The Role Of The Slp In Promoting Feeding Efficiency In The Nicu, Isabella N. Kefalas

Academic Festival

This literature review explores the crucial role of Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in promoting feeding efficiency among high-risk infants in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). With ongoing advancements in medical care leading to higher survival rates among preterm and medically fragile infants, there has been a corresponding increase in the identification of feeding and swallowing disorders. Over half a million children in the U.S. are diagnosed with dysphagia annually, highlighting the necessity for early intervention by SLPs, particularly in the NICU, where nearly 40% of affected children have a history of preterm birth. SLPs are essential in conducting thorough assessments …

Tech Meets Inclusion: Investigating Ai’S Role In Fair And Diverse Hiring, Lindsey Tortora

Academic Festival

Bias in recruitment has long hindered progress toward equitable and inclusive workplaces. Traditional hiring practices are often shaped by unconscious human biases, prompting the emergence of artificial intelligence (AI) as a potential solution for fairer, data-driven decision-making. However, research shows that AI tools trained on historical data may inherit and even amplify existing biases, raising critical concerns about transparency and fairness (Binns, 2018; Cowgill, Dell’Acqua, & Deng, 2021; Raghavan et al., 2020). This study explores whether AI can truly deliver bias-free hiring or if that remains a myth. By examining current research and industry applications, the study investigates the intersection …
