Donation Drive For St. Mary's Community Services, Brianna C. Aguilar

Service Learning Showcase

In Stockton, local organizations such as St. Mary’s Community Services work to combat homelessness by addressing challenges and improving their clients’ unique circumstances. Donations from the community are one of the most fundamental elements at St. Mary’s, as they help ensure clients receive adequate resources. However, the hygiene departments often experience deficiencies in essential items. These items include sports bras, tank tops, underwear, and belts. The goal of my donation drive was to reduce the deficiency of these frequently requested items.

Mnemonic Devices For Elementary Age Students, Benjamin J. Brogger, Valeria Espinoza

Service Learning Showcase

This project was aimed to address the issue of students not keeping their hands to themselves, particularly first grade through fourth grade students. After conducting a brief interview with the site supervisor at John R Williams Elementary, we decided that one of the most pressing issues was that of students physically touching or disturbing one another, which leads to conflict. To address this, we devised several mnemonic devices to encourage students to keep their hands to themselves. We devised a slogan (Hands in place- Jaguar space!) along with acronyms (P.A.W.S, H.A.N.D.S) and put those mnemonic devices on posters which were …

Myuphoria Festival Design, Caroline Rivera Apr 2025

Myuphoria Festival Design, Caroline Rivera

Research & Creativity Showcase

My original concept behind the name was to combine the captivating presence and storytelling of the muses in Greek mythology and merge it with the feeling of euphoria. My branding also ties into folklore and the seductive nature of sirens. The siren’s call becomes my own design language, incorporating seafoam textures—playing on the idea of a siren’s passing—with a warm color palette intentionally meant to be unconventional for imagery surrounding sirens. My work is based on the themes of wayfinding, mythology, and immersive design. This festival branding was purposefully designed to create a space where people can lose themselves and …

Theorizing The Body In The Asl Interpreting Field: Promising Dimensions For Further Research, Taylor L. Woodall-Greene, Lucy E. Bailey Apr 2025

Theorizing The Body In The Asl Interpreting Field: Promising Dimensions For Further Research, Taylor L. Woodall-Greene, Lucy E. Bailey

Journal of Interpretation

This paper theorizes body politics in the American Sign Language Interpreting profession. The field is facing problems with burnout and attrition. We focus on the interpreting body and present four themes, including the embodied demands, the limited available scholarship over “the body” in ASL, the fluctuating meaning of the interpreter’s bodily labor, and the educational implications of our analysis. We argue that attention to body politics matters, and more research is needed on the intersections between the body and the ASL interpreting profession. Continuing the research into these theoretical dimensions and interpreters’ self-care given the embodied demands of the profession, …

Academic Freedom In Interpreter Education: Teaching Communication Access In A Culture Of Censorship, Dawn M. Wessling, Mark A. Halley, Brendan Stern

Journal of Interpretation

Abstract

The primary function of signed language interpreters and translators is to foster inclusion and equity by ensuring effective communication access for deaf individuals from diverse linguistic backgrounds in public spaces. The effectiveness of interpreter education depends on the freedom of expression, thought, and behavior. This paper explores the impacts of illiberal legislation on American Sign Language/English interpreter education in Florida. Specifically, we describe how the illiberal attacks on academic freedom that preclude Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) initiatives and curricula, such as Florida’s SB266/HB999 (2023) and SB2525/HB7 (2022), present unprecedented challenges for interpreter and translator educators. In conclusion, we …

Admission Screening Into Signed Language Interpreter Education: A Longitudinal Case Study Of Readiness, Len Roberson, Sherry Shaw, Gail D. Hughes Apr 2025

Admission Screening Into Signed Language Interpreter Education: A Longitudinal Case Study Of Readiness, Len Roberson, Sherry Shaw, Gail D. Hughes

Journal of Interpretation

Testing applicants for admission into academic interpreting programs, whether spoken or signed, centers on the attempt to recruit and retain students who are most likely to acquire interpreting skills and successfully complete programs. Despite continual experimentation with various screening instruments and procedures in interpreter education, a definitive battery of tests to predict favorable student outcomes remains elusive to researchers, and programs are justifiably reluctant to enforce admission decisions based on screenings that have not been sufficiently evaluated for validity and reliability. This exploratory study provides an analysis of nine years of admission screening data to identify variables that might significantly …

Journal of Interpretation

The Beliefs and Attitudes regarding Deaf Interpreters (BADi) scale was developed to assess perceptions of Deaf Interpreters (DIs) among hearing interpreters, community members, and the broader hearing population. This study underwent four phases, encompassing item development, feedback from stakeholders, refinement, and broad data collection. Reliability analysis using Cronbach's alpha demonstrated acceptable internal consistency, with a final alpha rating of .72. The BADi items were split into two groups (Deaf and hearing) to investigate the frequencies for each item in both groups. Results indicated that most Deaf and hearing participants responded similarly across items, showcasing an overlap in beliefs and attitudes …

Different Methods To Estimate Stress-Strength Reliability Function For Modified Exponentiated Lomax Distribution, Raya Salim Al-Rassam, Khalida Ahmed Mohammed, Safwan Nathem Rashed Apr 2025

Different Methods To Estimate Stress-Strength Reliability Function For Modified Exponentiated Lomax Distribution, Raya Salim Al-Rassam, Khalida Ahmed Mohammed, Safwan Nathem Rashed

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

When ensuring the reliability of device or the suitability of a material, it is necessary to take into consideration the stress cases in the operating environment. This means that the uncertainty about the reality environmental stress must be taken into as random. The stress-strength (S-S) model treated the stress and strength variables as random. In the simplest form of stress-strength model, y represents the stress put on the unit by the operating environment, and the strength of the unit represented by x. A unit is able to perform its required function if its stress imposed on it is less than …

A New Ridge-Type Estimator In The Zero-Inflated Bell Regression Model, Nawal Mahmood Hammood, Nadwa Khazaal Rashad, Zakariya Yahya Algamal Apr 2025

A New Ridge-Type Estimator In The Zero-Inflated Bell Regression Model, Nawal Mahmood Hammood, Nadwa Khazaal Rashad, Zakariya Yahya Algamal

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Count data modeling requires usage of the Poisson regression model as a primary analytic method. Excess dispersion in variables makes the model unfit to use when the Poisson distribution mean value differs from its variance value. Data fits well with the results obtained by using the Bell regression model. Excess zeros occur frequently in the observed count data records. The Zero-Inflated Bell regression model is a substitute for the Bell regression model in this situation. The approach of maximum likelihood is mostly used to estimate the Zero-Inflated Bell regression model's parameters. When modeling the link between the response variable and …

Liberated Arabic Handwritten Text Recognition Using Convolutional Recurrent Neural Networks, Ahmad Abdulqadir Alrababah, Mohammed Khalid Aljahdali, Abdulrahim Abdulhamid Al Jahdali, Mohammed Saleh Alghanmi, Israa Ibraheem Al_Barazanchi

Iraqi Journal for Computer Science and Mathematics

Arabic script is exhibited in a cursive style, which is a departure from the norm in many common languages, and the shapes of letters are contingent on their positions within words. The form of the first letter is influenced by the subsequent letter, middle letters are shaped by both preceding and succeeding letters, and the shape of the final letter is determined by the preceding letter. Additionally, certain letters are found to have strikingly similar shapes, making Arabic text recognition a formidable challenge in computer vision. The challenge of detecting and recognizing Arabic handwritten text is addressed in this paper …
