Matching Student-Debt Payments With Retirement Contributions Has High Appeal For Low-Wage Workers: Implications For Secure 2.0, Stephen Roll, Mathieu Despard, Guangli Zhang Apr 2025

Matching Student-Debt Payments With Retirement Contributions Has High Appeal For Low-Wage Workers: Implications For Secure 2.0, Stephen Roll, Mathieu Despard, Guangli Zhang

Center for Social Development Research

Whether to prioritize paying down student debt now or saving for future retirement is a difficult choice, especially for low-wage workers. The SECURE 2.0 Act of 2022 allows employers to match employees’ qualified student-debt payments with contributions into their retirement plans, essentially allowing the employee to save and invest while paying down debt. This research brief draws upon data from the Workforce Economic Inclusion and Mobility (WEIM) survey of a nationally representative sample of vulnerable workers in the United States to examine how such student-loan matching programs affect the retirement savings behaviors of how low-wage workers and how offering these …

College of Population Health Faculty Papers

Heavy metal exposure is associated with adverse health effects in children including impaired cognitive functioning. Studies have identified spices as a potential source of heavy metals. However, in Lancaster, PA no such studies have been conducted. Hence the aim of this study was to quantify arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) in spices from Lancaster, PA. Spices were either purchased from stores in Lancaster or obtained as donations from families in Lancaster. As, Cd, and Pb were quantified using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The Wilcoxon rank sum test was used to compare the median heavy metal concentrations in store-purchased …

Multi-instrument studies have recently shed new light on the morphology of sporadic E, especially intense sporadic E. Here we present simultaneous observations of dense sporadic E (Es) structures using the Long Wavelength Array (LWA) radio telescopes and a Digisonde Portable Sounder 4D (DPS4D). Our coordinated observations show that the LWA radio telescopes in central New Mexico can reliably locate regions of dense Es structures as they pass over a Digisonde located over 500 km away in Texas. The LWA appears to be most sensitive to the densest Es structures, which also appear to contain irregularities with vertical …

Place-Based Harms And Hidden Strengths: A Qualitative Study Exploring Facets Of Neighborhood Disinvestment Driving Opioid Overdose Among Black Individuals, Kaytryn D Campbell, Rachel P Winograd, Maria E Paschke, Alex Duello, Devin E Banks

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Despite significant efforts to address the opioid overdose crisis, Black people who use drugs (PWUD) face unabating, disproportionate increases in opioid overdose death (OOD) rates. These inequities persist in treatment admissions, utilization of medication for opioid use disorder, and treatment retention. Research has linked neighborhood disinvestment - a process of urban decline driven by policy-related changes in neighborhood demand and desirability leading to decreased population, physical and economic erosion, and poorer quality of life for residents - to increased rates of OOD. However, given recent increases in OOD inequities, more research is needed to determine the specific aspects of …

INTRODUCTION: Guideline-based tobacco treatment is infrequently offered. Electronic health record-enabled patient-generated health data (PGHD) has the potential to increase patient treatment engagement and satisfaction.

METHODS: We evaluated outcomes of a strategy to enable PGHD in a medical oncology clinic from July 1, 2021 to December 31, 2022. Among 12,777 patients, 82.1% received a tobacco screener about use and interest in treatment as part of eCheck-in via the patient portal.

RESULTS: We attained a broad reach (82.1%) and moderate response rate (30.9%) for this low-burden PGHD strategy. Patients reporting current smoking (

DISCUSSION: PGHD via patient portal appears to be a …

Changing The World, One Play At A Time, Michelle Miller-Day, Noreen Raja-Halpern

Communication Faculty Books and Book Chapters

Throughout history, the performing arts have been used as an accessible tool for communication, raising awareness about social issues and affecting positive change. Social justice theatre encompassing documentary theatre, verbatim theatre, and social justice ethnodrama is designed to raise critical consciousness, build community, interrupt, and alter oppressive systemic social patterns, and motivate individuals to promote social change. This chapter addresses how social justice influenced the development of a two-act crime victim advocacy play titled Call this Number and critically analyzes social justice theatre through the lens of narrative engagement theory. This chapter advances understanding of how to develop social justice …

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive primary brain cancer with few effective therapies. Stereotactic needle biopsies are routinely used for diagnosis; however, the feasibility and utility of investigative biopsies to monitor treatment response remains ill-defined. Here, we demonstrate the depth of data generation possible from routine stereotactic needle core biopsies and perform highly resolved multi-omics analyses, including single-cell RNA sequencing, spatial transcriptomics, metabolomics, proteomics, phosphoproteomics, T-cell clonotype analysis, and MHC Class I immunopeptidomics on standard biopsy tissue obtained intra-operatively. We also examine biopsies taken from different locations and provide a framework for measuring spatial and genomic heterogeneity. Finally, we investigate the …

The Potential Of Brain Organoids In Addressing The Heterogeneity Of Synucleinopathies, Yun-Cheng Wu Apr 2025

The Potential Of Brain Organoids In Addressing The Heterogeneity Of Synucleinopathies, Yun-Cheng Wu

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Synucleinopathies are a group of diseases characterized by neuronal and glial accumulation of α-synuclein (aSyn) linked with different clinical presentations, including Parkinson's disease (PD), Parkinson's disease with dementia (PDD), Dementia with Lewy Bodies (DLB) and Multiple system atrophy (MSA). Interestingly, the structure of the aSyn aggregates can vary across different synucleinopathies. Currently, it is unclear how the aSyn protein can aggregate into diverse structures and affect distinct cell types and various brain regions, leading to different clinical symptoms. Recent advances in induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)-based brain organoids (BOs) technology provide an unprecedented opportunity to define the etiology of synucleinopathies …

A Spatiotemporal Machine Learning Framework For The Prediction Of Metocean Conditions In The Gulf Of Mexico: Application To Loop Current And Loop Current Eddy Forecasting, Edward Steele, Marcus Juniper, Ajit Pillai, Ian Ashton, Jiaxin Chen, Sergio Jaramillo, Luz Zarate

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

We are entering an exciting new era of data-driven weather prediction, where forecast models trained on historical data (including observations and reanalyses) offer an alternative to directly solving the governing equations of fluid dynamics. By capitalizing on a vast amount of available information – and capturing their inherent patterns that are not represented explicitly – such machine learning-based techniques have the potential to increase forecast accuracy, augmenting traditional physics-based equivalents. Here, we adapt and apply a promising machine learning framework – originally proposed by the present authors for regional prediction of ocean waves – to the operational forecasting of the …

V-domain Ig-containing suppressor of T cell activation (VISTA) is a unique immune checkpoint protein, which was reported to display both receptor and ligand activities. However, the mechanisms of regulation of VISTA activity and functions by factors of tumour microenvironment (TME) remain unclear and understanding these processes is required in order to develop successful personalised cancer immunotherapeutic strategies and approaches. Here we report for the very first time that VISTA interacts with another immune checkpoint protein galectin-9 inside the cell most likely facilitating its interaction with TGF-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1). This process is required for protection of lysosomes, which is crucial …

Improving Knowledge Regarding The Use Of Long-Acting Injections In The Management Of Schizophrenia In Psychiatric Providers Using Focused Staff Education, Mutiat Popoola

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Summary Despite the potential benefits of long-acting injections (LAIs) in schizophrenia treatment, current literature reveals a severe knowledge gap among psychiatric practitioners about their use. This knowledge gap may also contribute to underutilizing LAIs in clinical practice and at the project site, reducing patients' access to this effective treatment therapy. This staff education project was developed and conducted to determine if focused education about the use of LAIs in the management of schizophrenia in psychiatric providers improved provider knowledge of their usage. Medication nonadherence in psychiatric patients can result in increased relapse rates and hospitalizations, poor medication adherence, increased healthcare …
