An Uncharacteristic Case Presentation Of Functional Vision Disorder, Ramandeep Kaur Od, Theresa Zerilli-Zavgorodni Od, Nancy Shenouda-Awad Od Apr 2025

An Uncharacteristic Case Presentation Of Functional Vision Disorder, Ramandeep Kaur Od, Theresa Zerilli-Zavgorodni Od, Nancy Shenouda-Awad Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Functional Vision Disorder (FVD), also commonly referred to as functional vision loss (FVL) or non-organic vision loss (NOVL), is defined as a visual acuity (VA) loss and/or visual field (VF) loss, without any identifiable ocular or cortical pathology. Many clinicians look at FVD as a diagnosis of exclusion and while it is imperative to rule out organic pathology, FVD diagnosis must be supported by clinical findings that prove normal visual function. Incorporating supplementary tests specific for demonstrating the integrity of the visual system and the non-organic nature of the symptoms will allow clinicians to be more confident when diagnosing …

A Case Report Of Vitreopapillary Traction Mistaken For Optic Disc Edema, Breyne Middleton Od, Drew Anderson Od Apr 2025

A Case Report Of Vitreopapillary Traction Mistaken For Optic Disc Edema, Breyne Middleton Od, Drew Anderson Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Traction of the optic disc occurs during incomplete detachment of the posterior vitreous from the peripapillary glial tissue. It can sometimes cause the appearance of disc edema and bilateral cases can be confused with papilledema or cause patients to be worked up for pseudotumor cerebri.

Case Report: A patient presented with an outside diagnosis of unilateral optic disc edema and was found in fact to have vitreopapillary traction.

Conclusion: Costly, ultimately unnecessary testing such as magnetic resonance imaging can be sometimes avoided if vitreopapillary traction is considered as a differential for disc edema. It can be easily identified with …

A Space-Occupying Lesion Manifesting As Unilateral Optic Disc Edema, Len V. Koh Od, Phd, Anna Wells Od, Lindsay Jansen Od Apr 2025

A Space-Occupying Lesion Manifesting As Unilateral Optic Disc Edema, Len V. Koh Od, Phd, Anna Wells Od, Lindsay Jansen Od

Optometric Clinical Practice

Background: Primary and secondary orbital diseases can arise from different tissues in the periorbital regions as space-occupying lesion leading to ophthalmic symptoms. Therefore, eye care providers are often the first encounter for these patients.

Case report: A 54-year-old Caucasian male presented as a new patient at the eye clinic with an incidental finding of edema of the left optic disc. After a thorough optometric evaluation, a referral was made to a local ear-nose-throat (ENT) specialist who confirmed a diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma by further neuroimaging. Surgical removal eventuated in resolution of disc edema with restoration of vision.

Conclusion: An insidious …

The Relationship Between Parental Control And Children’S Emotional And Academic Success In Adulthood, Kelsey Carlton, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Janet P. Trammell Apr 2025

The Relationship Between Parental Control And Children’S Emotional And Academic Success In Adulthood, Kelsey Carlton, Cindy Miller-Perrin, Janet P. Trammell

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

College is an important time of transition for adolescents going into adulthood, experiencing life for the first time away from their parents. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the amount of parental restrictive control during adolescence and the level of subjective happiness, perceived wellness, and academic performance reported in college. Participants included 134 college students who completed an online survey that included the Subjective Happiness Scale, Academic Performance Scale, Perceived Wellness Survey, the Parental Restrictive Control Questionnaire for primary parent/guardian and secondary parent/guardian, and a variety of demographic questions. Results did not support any of …

It is believed that magnetic reconnection is one of the main mechanisms to transfer energy and momentum from the for the solar wind into the terrestrial environment. Dungey suggested that magnetic reconnection occurs on the dayside magnetosphere when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is southward. Poleward moving auroral forms (PMAFs) have been identified in past studies as Ionospheric signatures of magnetic reconnection on the dayside.

However, magnetic reconnection can also occur for other geometrical orientations of the IMF. This presentation presents possible examples, 1 December 2021, for lobe reconnection during periods when the IMF x-component is negative, coupled with a …

The Fractography Of Bone: Impact Of Flat Bone And The Story It Tells, Abigail Hoffmeister, Chase Freeman, Brandon Mendoza, Nathaniel Fitch, Annie Markarian, Jack Tran, Joshua Lau, Nicholas Tran

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Fractography as a method for fracture analysis has been applied widely to materials that range from glass to ceramics and polymers of varying compositions. Very limited research has been done, however, to apply this knowledge of fractography and fracture patterns to bone. With the goal of telling the story of how a bone was broken, this research focuses on observing known patterns of fracture in polymers, and applying these patterns to bone. For the purposes of this research, porcine scapulae were acquired, dissected from surrounding tissue, and broken using a standardized weight drop at varying heights. The fractured bone was …

Title: Explaining volunteering behavior within a social-cognitive model of motivation framework

Faculty: Corinne Novell, Steven Bauer, Alice Labban Student: Kayee (Jenny) Kwok

Abstract:

Nonprofit organizations face major difficulties when it comes to retaining volunteer participants even though volunteers give valuable support to their missions. The research evaluates what makes volunteers retain their commitment using mindsets as a key variable set. A belief system about trait development known as the growth mindset, according to Dweck and Leggett’s (1988) Social-Cognitive Model of Motivation, produces positive effects on the intentions of future volunteering. Our research demonstrates …

Dayside Auroral Oval Expansion, Magnetic Flux Erosion, And Substorms, Dora Csonge, Parker Para, Gerard Fasel, Owen Bradley, Gasia Excel, Makena Swenski, Rachel Rodriguez, Sun-Hee Lee, John Mann, F. Sigernes, D. Lorentzen

Seaver College Research And Scholarly Achievement Symposium

Magnetic flux is eroded from the dayside magnetosphere when the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) turns southward. During this period, the dayside auroral oval shifts equatorward as magnetic flux is transported anti-sunward to the magnetotail. Poleward-Moving Auroral Forms (PMAFs) are thought to be the ionospheric footprints of the flux tubes which are formed and transported tailward. Afterwards, magnetic reconnection occurs in the magnetotail, resulting in a substorm.

This study looks at the time between the onset of dayside magnetic reconnection and the onset of a substorm. Rates of dayside auroral oval equatorward shifts after southward turnings of the IMF are presented, …
