Schwannomatosis (SWN) is a distinct cancer predisposition syndrome caused by germline pathogenic variants in the genes NF2, SMARCB1, or LZTR1. There is a significant clinical overlap between these syndromes with the hallmark of increased risk for cranial, spinal, and peripheral schwannomas. Neurofibromatosis type 2 was recently renamed as NF2-related SWN and is the most common SWN syndrome, with increased risk for bilateral vestibular schwannomas, intradermal schwannomas, meningiomas, and less commonly, ependymoma. SMARCB1-related SWN is a familial SWN syndrome associated with peripheral and spinal schwannomas and an increased risk for meningiomas and malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, even in the absence …

Background: The impact of mitral valve (MV) surgery type after failed mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair (M-TEER) has not been well studied.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare the outcomes of MV repair vs replacement after failed M-TEER.

Methods: From 2009 to 2020, a total of 332 patients across 34 centers from the CUTTING-EDGE registry underwent MV surgery after M-TEER. Outcomes were compared between MV repair and replacement. Primary outcomes included 30-day mortality and 1-year survival after MV surgery.

In recent decades, K-12 public schools have introduced get-tough measures ostensibly to improve school safety through punitive responses to misconduct and delinquency--expanding from traditional security measures to more punitive, zero-tolerance policies and surveillance-based approaches. Academic literature and media accounts highlight that such efforts continue to proliferate and extend across our nation's school spaces. This three-paper dissertation examines how specific safety practices--namely, the presence of armed civilians, School Resource Officers (SROs), and random metal detector checks--influence student outcomes and contribute to the school-to-prison pipeline. Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is one of the strongest predictors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) and mortality; yet the means to diagnose LVH in resource-constrained settings remain limited. The objectives of this study were to determine LVH prevalence by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) in a high-risk group, and compare TTE vs. electrocardiography (ECG-LVH) for LVH detection. We analyzed enrollment data from the Haiti cardiovascular disease cohort study on adults (≥ 18 years, n = 3,005) in Port-au-Prince between 2019 and 2021. The oncomutation lysine 27-to-methionine in histone H3 (H3K27M) is frequently identified in tumors of patients with diffuse midline glioma-H3K27 altered (DMG-H3K27a). H3K27M inhibits the deposition of the histone mark H3K27me3, which affects the maintenance of transcriptional programs and cell identity. Cells expressing H3K27M are also characterized by defects in genome integrity, but the mechanisms linking expression of the oncohistone to DNA damage remain mostly unknown. In this study, we demonstrate that expression of H3.1K27M in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana interferes with post-replicative chromatin maturation mediated by the H3.1K27 methyltransferases ATXR5 and ATXR6. This disclosure presents a method for intelligent call transfer between computing devices (e.g., a PC and a phone). The system detects specific conditions such as low battery levels on either device, user mobility (e.g., locking the PC to leave), or varying network connectivity quality. Upon detection, the system prompts the user to transfer the ongoing call to the more suitable device, ensuring uninterrupted communication. This solution addresses common issues such as delays in connectivity and meeting disruptions, providing a seamless transition between devices during conferencing. Colonial Legacies And Gender Equality: A Study Of Women’S Rights In Angola & Namibia, Anna E. Stephens

Global Tides

Angola and Namibia, neighboring countries in southwestern Africa, share a history of colonial exploitation and rich natural resources, yet diverge sharply in their post-independence trajectories concerning gender equality. This paper employs the method of difference to investigate how Namibia emerged as a continental and global leader in advancing women’s rights, while Angola continues to face significant challenges. It argues that Namibia’s inclusive liberation movement and peaceful, UN-brokered decolonization contrast with Angola’s prolonged and violent colonial legacy under Portugal, which culminated in a devastating civil war. The paper also considers how Namibia’s smaller population may have fostered greater unity and gender …
