01 - Design Of Ion-Sieve For Selective Adsorption Of Lithium From Geothermal Brine, Agyare Asante, Abigail Berardi, Jayla Standin, Elliott Walker, Alvin Spruill, Ujjwal Pokharel, Sandeep Kumar
Undergraduate Research Symposium
The growing demand for lithium-ion batteries necessitates efficient and sustainable lithium extraction technologies. Geothermal brines provide an alternative lithium source; however, their complex ionic composition challenges selective lithium recovery. Hydrogen manganese oxides (H4Mn4.5O12) are widely studied as lithium-ion sieves due to their high selectivity for lithium ions. Still, its structural instability and manganese dissolution during adsorption-desorption cycles limit long-term performance. This study introduced zirconium (Zr) doping into the spinel-type Li4Mn5O12 precursor through a one-step calcination process (450 °C for 24 hours at 10 °C min-1), ensuring an …

Arab Economic and Business Journal
Work-life balance has become an essential aspect of employees’ fundamental rights provided by the workplace in almost every industry. While WLB is widely recognized for enhancing employees’ productivity, motivation, and consequently, the overall success of the organization, limited research has focused on its role in the educational sector, particularly in Lebanon. In the educational sector, this concept is particularly important since this sector is known for the high amounts of workload during and after school hours. This study explores the impact of work-life balance on job satisfaction among both Lebanese and non-Lebanese teachers in private and public schools in Lebanon, …

Cloud providers implement support for System for Cross Domain Identity Management (SCIM) RFCs that mandate only how users and groups are to be provisioned. Administrators of cloud platforms must rely on third-party Identity Providers (IdPs) for group creation and management on the cloud platform. Empty or orphan groups consume storage and bookkeeping resources on the cloud platform, while a compromise or malfunction on the IdP end can exhaust cloud resources and/or impose costs on the cloud platform. This disclosure describes techniques to automatically detect and remove empty and/or inactive user groups using a periodically run mapping algorithm and/or suitably trained …

The Role Of Intuition In Knowledge, Kenzi Mcspadden
The Role Of Intuition In Knowledge, Kenzi Mcspadden
Global Tides
In this paper, McSpadden challenges Climenhaga's use of intuitions as evidence by arguing that one does not have to cite memories, sensory experiences, and testimony in order to subconsciously use them to form her beliefs. McSpadden argues that there is a psychological definition of what intuitions could be, that intuitions do not always make philosophers more confident in their beliefs, and that intuitions can instead be explained by a cognitive reaction using past experiences.

From Explanationism To Pragmatic Explanationism: A New Framework For Knowledge And Stakes, Jacob Guise
Global Tides
In "From Explanationism to Pragmatic Explanationism: A New Framework for Knowledge and Stakes", Guise defends the thesis that Pragmatic Explanationism helps overcome Explanationism's limitations in addressing pragmatic encroachment, specifically in high stakes scenarios and situations involving hidden practical factors. Guise argues that Pragmatic Explanationism should be adopted over Explanationism.

Tolkien, Tabletop, And Orcs: The Impact Of Participatory Neomedievalisms On Authority, Tyler Bell
Tolkien, Tabletop, And Orcs: The Impact Of Participatory Neomedievalisms On Authority, Tyler Bell
ATU Theses and Dissertations 2021 - Present
Different medieval and fantasy works have utilized race in different ways. Medieval Europe used race as a structural relationship to morally and religiously other certain people groups. J.R.R. Tolkien used race in a similar way, othering the fantasy races like orcs as a way to give the audiences clear antagonists. Direct film and video game adaptations of Tolkien uphold him as the authority on fantasy race, using orcs as antagonists and glorifying violence against them. The table-top role-playing game Dungeons and Dragons initially held up the antagonistic portrayal of orcs, but through different editions, the restrictions placed on orcs have …

Tales About Afghan Women After The U.S. Lost The War In Afghanistan In 2021: A Frame Analysis Of Coverage In The New York Times, Ismat Ara Begum
Communication ETDs
This study investigates how U.S. news media framed Afghan women’s identities and experiences in the context of the Taliban’s return to power after the U.S. military withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan. In this qualitative inquiry, I examined 11 in-depth, human-interest stories in The New York Times, a mainstream news organization known for its influence on coverage of international and global affairs. A frame analysis was applied to identify salient frames and their ideological underpinnings. The findings show two dominant frames in the coverage, women’s rights and victimhood, articulated through three rhetorical strategies—binary oppositions, comparing loss vs. gain, and emphasis on …

The Social Life Of Plants: Botanical Representations In Moche Art, Breanna Fae Reiss
The Social Life Of Plants: Botanical Representations In Moche Art, Breanna Fae Reiss
Art & Art History ETDs
The Moche were semi-autonomous communities who thrived in the ten fertile riverine valleys of Peru’s northern coast between the late fourth and ninth centuries CE. Phase IV (c. 590–700 CE) Southern Moche ceramics feature intricate fine line visual narrative scenes with many multivalent symbols and motifs. This dissertation intends to understand why plants begin to play a more significant role in the Moche iconographic corpus in this period. I explore the interests of elites, the ecological web interweaving image and environment, and species identification. The local flora was affected on one hand by naturally occurring changes in weather and environment …
