The first comprehensive report on the cumulative impacts of Canadian extractive industries in Africa. There are profiles of 23 Canadian companies, operating in 17 African countries, over a period of 30 years. The report contrasts company actions against international standards for corporate accountability in eight areas: Displacement of communities; Security and Violence: The North Mara Mine; Workers: Conscription, Conflict and Deadly Accidents, Corruption; Silencing Critiques and Suppressing Investigations; Extractive Industries in Conflict-Affected Areas; Environmental Impacts; Economic Diplomacy: Canadian Support to Extractive Industries.   The cumulative impacts are alarming. Electronic Medical Records (EMR) adoption aims to improve documentation efficiency and nurses’ performance; however, system instability and limited continuous training remain obstacles. This study examined the effects of EMR features and functionality, technical support and training, and users’ perceptions and attitudes on nurses’ performance at Grha Permata Ibu Hospital. This study employed an analytic observational design with a cross-sectional approach, using a quantitative survey conducted among 74 inpatient nurses through a Likert-scale questionnaire. Descriptive analysis, Spearman correlations, and multiple linear regression were employed. The increasing use of antibiotics over recent decades has significantly affected global public health, primarily through the emergence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), which contributes to higher morbidity, mortality, and economic burden. As a regional referral hospital, Bekasi Regency General Hospital faces substantial challenges related to high resistance rates, with multidrug-resistant organisms (MDROs) showing MRSA at 22.22% and ESBL at 40% in 2024. Doctors' perceptions are important for supporting interprofessional collaboration, quality of patient care, and patient outcomes. The study results are expected to identify competency gaps and provide an evidence-based foundation for developing measurable and effective nurse training programs. The study used a quantitative descriptive design with a cross-sectional approach, with a sample of 24 doctors who evaluated nurses' overall competencies in their work units. This book offers a new genre of simulations: scenarios situated within the universes and narrative arcs of popular movies, books, and television series. These simulations bring  new levels of excitement, engagement, and motivation to the classroom as students practice decision-making within familiar storylines,  negotiating new twists in beloved tales, or settling conflicts between their favorite characters. Generation retirement studies are a critical part of long-term transmission planning, as power systems transition toward higher penetration of renewable energy and the retirement of conventional generation. However, existing study workflows are often fragmented across multiple tools and platforms such as PSS/E, TARA, Python, and Excel resulting in time-intensive processes, limited scalability, and reduced reproducibility. Wild bees are important pollinators in agricultural systems, yet patterns of wild bee abundance and diversity in commercial lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) fields remain poorly characterized. We conducted a preliminary, observational assessment of wild bee abundance and species richness across organically managed lavender fields, including both certified organic and non-certified fields following organic practices, in Provence, France, between 2022 and 2024. Standardized 15-min collections were used to compare wild bee and managed honey bee activity during 66 sampling events, while additional non-standardized collections were used to characterize and qualitatively compare the taxa present in the different field settings. Animal movement is fundamental to biodiversity, offering early signals of species' responses to environmental change. I first discuss how wildlife movement is shaped by landscape composition and configuration, from global to local scales. I then focus on one linear infrastructure reconfiguring landscapes worldwide: fences. Drawing on research from the western US and beyond, I show how fences reshape animal movement, with cascading consequences for ecosystems and societies. I close with reflections on broadening this science through visual storytelling.

Animal Sentience

In his 2024 book, Jonathan Birch builds a precautionary framework for the borderlines of sentience, one that is meant to guide both theoretical reflection and practical action. One of the book’s great merits is its bottom-up approach, which presents itself as theoretically neutral regarding the (neuro-)physiological criteria required for sentience. Yet the singular place granted to midbrain-centric views (e.g., Merker, 2007; Panksepp, 2011; Solms, 2021) and to what Birch calls the “brainstem rule” (Chapter 11) raises questions. What justifies granting it such a central role? What are its practical and theoretical consequences?

Family reunification involves more than returning a child to the care of their biological family; it requires the sustained promotion of child safety, stability, and family well-being. This literature review examined how trauma-informed and collaborative approaches support safe, stable, and lasting reunification within the child welfare system. The review explored adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and developmental, psychological, family, and socioeconomic risk factors associated with child welfare involvement and permanency outcomes, as well as protective factors such as supportive relationships, caregiver well-being, resilience, and access to services and resources. The problem of automated feature selection is one of the most important aspects of modern recommender systems, as overestimating the number of feature fields used, which can increase model complexity, inference latency, and performance degradation due to redundancy and noise. Although differentiable Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) based feature selection methods, including AutoField, are effective, they remain susceptible to initialization and local optima. Material and felt precarity are increasing in Ontario cities, impacted by housing and food unaffordability, an unpredictable drug supply, rising homelessness, and unmet social and health needs. The social relations of precarity play out in public spaces like libraries, changing how people’s work in, and experiences of, public space are organized. The worsening mental health epidemic among college students is marked by significant risk for loneliness, anxiety, and depression. Given that the demand for mental health care is outpacing institutional capacity, creative solutions are needed to augment traditional reactive interventions. In this qualitative research, we used narrative case study to explore the transformative power of community mural-making as experiential learning. Drawing on Seligman’s PERMA model (positive emotions, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment) we investigated how creative expression can cultivate positive psychological states to help students flourish (1991; 2011; 2018).
