How Politicians Use Public Relations Strategies To Manipulate The Political Opinions Of Young People, Kylie O’Neil

Honors Theses

With the rise of the internet and social media, politicians have begun to utilize evolving public relations (PR) strategies in the online sphere to sway the political opinions of young people who can or will one day vote. This thesis will analyze these public relations strategies and how they are intended to manipulate the people consuming the content and answer the question of how politicians use public relations strategies to manipulate the political opinions of young people. The data will be collected by monitoring the news as well as social media profiles of multiple politicians on both sides of the …

Dissecting Discourse On Discord: A Linguistic Ethnography Of A Discord Server, Amy Lemmon Apr 2025

Dissecting Discourse On Discord: A Linguistic Ethnography Of A Discord Server, Amy Lemmon

2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase

To deepen the understanding of communication in the evolving landscape of digital social spaces, this study conducts an ethnographic analysis of a private Discord server. Data collection methods include participant observation, field notes, interviews, and surveys, which are analyzed for patterns in notable discourse features within a Discord server containing multiple text and voice channels. Prior digital linguistic ethnography research, such as Lauren Collister’s work on World of Warcraft, has examined multimodal communication and mode-switching in live, in-game interactions. Unlike Collister’s study, which focused on real-time speech and text with immediate responses, this research explores asynchronous text-based discourse extending …

Taking A Legal Oath: Historical Context And Cultural Significance, Shavonne Bostaph, Jeff Lingwall

2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase

This research project examines the history and practice of symbolism in courtroom procedure. For instance, the phrase “place your left hand on the Bible, and raise your right hand to take the oath” may be familiar, but its roots are largely forgotten. This project examines those roots in religious and cultural history and then connects them to the psychological and economic effects of administering a modern justice system. To do so, my work was divided into researching three elements: media, courtroom procedure, and historical symbolism. First, to understand the basis of the impact of tradition, I viewed how oaths were …

The "Anxious" Generation: How Older Generations' Value Systems Endanger Gen Z'S Development, Sailor Nelson

2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase

There is a growing gap between Generation Z and older generations. (e.g., Spencer, 2023). This project explores how misconceptions about Gen Z’s value systems and behaviors contribute to social and emotional development declines. Using Jonathan Haidt and Jesse Graham’s Moral Foundations Theory, along with themes from Dr. April Masarik’s Human Universals Project in the Human Development & Ecology Lab, this research examines how moral values differ across generations and how these differences lead to conflict, misunderstanding, and unnecessary judgement. Misconceptions about Gen Z, such as perceptions of them being “lazy,” “entitled,” or “anxious,” are analyzed in the context of Human …

Effects On Incubation Behavior In American Kestrels, Mackenzie G. Hutchinson, Sarah E. Scott, Linda M. Reynard, Julie A. Heath

2025 Undergraduate Research Showcase

Incubation and parental care are essential behaviors for the healthy development of offspring. Stressors such as migration and disease can affect parental care resulting in altered egg survival and hatch rates. Therefore, varying individual fitness and life history events may lead to changes in reproductive fitness across a population. We examined the relationship between incubation behavior and blood parasite prevalence, migratory strategy (migrant or resident), mass, and first egg date in a population of American Kestrels (Falco sparverius) in southwest Idaho to determine influences on incubation behavior. We observed incubation behavior using nest box camera images taken during …

Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines For Perioperative Insulin Pump Usage And Glycemic Control During The Perioperative Period, Duane Robinson Apr 2025

Evidence-Based Practice Guidelines For Perioperative Insulin Pump Usage And Glycemic Control During The Perioperative Period, Duane Robinson

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

According to the International Diabetes Federation, Diabetes Mellitus (DM) affects approximately 537 million people, representing approximately 10% of the worldwide population aged 20 to 79. Approximately 400,000 people with DM use continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) pumps. CSII pump therapy mimics pancreatic insulin release, aiding in maintaining adequate insulin levels. Individuals with DM are more likely to require surgery than individuals without the disease. Among diabetics, people with Type 1 DM (T1D) are more likely to need medical interventions than individuals with Type 2 DM (T2DM). CSII therapy maintains blood glucose levels within a programmed range and decreases blood glucose …

The Psychological Effects Of Ice Conditions In Long-Term Space Travel, Jamen W. Barker Apr 2025

The Psychological Effects Of Ice Conditions In Long-Term Space Travel, Jamen W. Barker

Student Works

The psychological effects of long durations spent in space remain largely unexplored, as do potential treatments for these effects. This review compiled data from 19 articles found via searches on the APAPsychInfo and Google Scholar databases, as well as a few ancillary sources. These studies are relevant to the study of the psychological effects of space travel and isolated, confined, or extreme (ICE) environments, and research into means of addressing them, as well as limitations in current literature on the topic. Studies found sleep deprivation, largely due to microgravity, to be a contributing factor to increased stress in space. Social …

Championing Equity, Encountering Burnout: A Historical Analysis Of The Influence Of Educational Accountability Policies On Teacher Well-Being, Andrea Summers Apr 2025

Championing Equity, Encountering Burnout: A Historical Analysis Of The Influence Of Educational Accountability Policies On Teacher Well-Being, Andrea Summers

JWU Dissertations & Theses

This study explores the relationship between U.S. educational accountability policies and teacher well-being. While researchers have established the instrumental role of teachers in shaping student academic achievement and lifetime outcomes (Darling-Hammond, 2000; Hanushek, 2019), many teachers grapple with high levels of stress and burnout (Steiner & Woo, 2021), which negatively impacts teacher well-being (Herman et al., 2018; Turner & Thielking 2019). The era of educational accountability was initiated to improve K-12 education and ensure equity and excellence for all students (Figlio & Loeb, 2011); however, it has coincided with, and may have exacerbated, teacher stress and burnout (Trinidad, 2023). To …

Life After Death: Investigating The Resistance And Recovery Of Fungal Communities To Foundation Tree Mortality, Jessie F. Marlenee Apr 2025

Life After Death: Investigating The Resistance And Recovery Of Fungal Communities To Foundation Tree Mortality, Jessie F. Marlenee

Biology ETDs

Tree mortality can have cascading effects on the composition and resilience of interacting fungal communities. Yet, little is known about the impact tree mortality, distinct from abiotic drivers (i.e., drought), has on these communities. This dissertation focuses on the resilience of fungal communities to experimental tree mortality in a piñon-juniper woodland. In chapter one, I found that piñon mortality reduced piñon fine root biomass and piñon mycorrhizal fungal diversity, whereas juniper mycorrhizal fungi were unaffected by juniper mortality. In chapter two, I revealed that piñon mortality altered the composition and spatial structure of mycorrhizal and saprotrophic fungi in the soil, …

Fabrication And Characterization Of Holographic Lenses Recorded In Photopolymers With High Refractive Index Modulation For Application In Solar Concentration, Brian Rogers, Paola Galli, Suzanne Martin, Andrea Bianco, Izabela Naydenova

Research Outputs: 2025-Present

Holographic optical elements have a history of use in solar concentrating devices. One of the most significant challenges of using these elements in real-life devices is their typically high angular and spectral selectivity. A possible solution to expanding their operational range is using thinner devices, but to achieve high diffraction efficiency, a recording material with a high refractive index is required. In this work, a photopolymer with high refractive index modulation is used to create volume holographic lenses in layers as thin as 10 µm, while maintaining high diffraction efficiency. These lenses are designed for minimal angular selectivity, while still …

Disorder Enhanced Thermalization In Interacting Many-Particle System, Chakradhar Rangi, Herbert F. Fotso, Hanna Terletska, Juana Moreno, Ka Ming Tam

Faculty Publications

We introduce an extension of the nonequilibrium dynamical mean-field theory to incorporate the effects of static random disorder in the dynamics of a many-particle system by integrating out different disorder configurations resulting in an effective time-dependent density-density interaction. We use this method to study the nonequilibrium transient dynamics of a system described by the Fermi Anderson-Hubbard model following an interaction and disorder quench. The method recovers the solution of the disorder-free case for which the system exhibits qualitatively distinct dynamical behaviors in the weak-coupling (prethermalization) and strong-coupling regimes (collapse-and-revival oscillations). However, we find that weak random disorder promotes thermalization. In …

Missense Mutation Of Msh6 Leucine 696 Has No Apparent Effect On The Dna Mismatch Repair Process, Razan H. Hammad, Rafia Rashid, Essence Tarrence, Christopher Bolden, Joanna E. Haye-Bertolozzi

XULAneXUS

Lynch Syndrome and Constitutional Mismatch Repair Deficiency are human diseases implicated in mutations of DNA mismatch repair (MMR) genes. This experiment tested a mutation of an MMR gene, MSH6, and evaluated how the mutation affected overall MMR effectiveness. Using the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, we performed the CAN1 forward mutation assay to study msh6-L696F and its implications in the MMR process. We hypothesized that there would be a significant change in molecular function in the Msh6 protein in the presence of this mutation. Bioinformatic tools predicted that this amino acid change would have deleterious effects on MMR function. However, …

The extent and distribution of tropical peatlands, and their importance as a vulnerable carbon (C) store, remain poorly quantified. Although large peatland complexes in Peru, the Congo basin, and Southeast Asia have been mapped in detail, information on many other tropical areas is uncertain. In the Eastern Colombian lowlands, peatland area estimates range from 700 km2 to nearly 60,000 km2, leading to highly uncertain C stocks. Using new field data, high-resolution Earth observation (EO), and a random forest approach, we mapped peatlands across Colombian territory East of the Andes below 400 m elevation. We estimated peatland extent using two approaches: …
