Do Individuals With Mental Illness Engage In More Violence Than Others?, Kaley E. Rajewski Apr 2025

Do Individuals With Mental Illness Engage In More Violence Than Others?, Kaley E. Rajewski

SACAD: Scholarly Activities

The stigma of mental illness that remains prevalent in our society has direct ties to the idea that mental illness and violence are interrelated. Regardless of data, the public perception of mental illness can and does include a preconceived notion of violent tendencies. Research has examined why these perceptions exist and whether they are valid. Research has evaluated various groups from both the general public and groups of individuals suffering from various levels of mental illness. Examinations in the public perception included location, age, economic status, sex, and race. Examinations in the mental health field evaluated different types of mental …

Rewiring An Enzyme: K135f Mutation In Malate Dehydrogenase, Lauren Ratz, Kaci Schmoll Apr 2025

Rewiring An Enzyme: K135f Mutation In Malate Dehydrogenase, Lauren Ratz, Kaci Schmoll

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2025

Malate Dehydrogenase (MDH) is an enzyme that catalyzes the reaction of malate to oxaloacetate by reducing the cofactor NAD+ to NADH in the citric acid cycle, playing a crucial role in cellular metabolism. Alterations in the MDH structure have been linked to metabolic diseases and cancers, though its overall structure remains poorly characterized. To better understand MDH, we manipulated its structure by inserting a point mutation into the flexible loop region at position 135, exchanging a lysine (Lys) to a phenylalanine (Phe). We hypothesized that mutating a positively charged amino acid (Lys) to an aromatic amino acid (Phe) would cause …

The Hidden Carbon Footprint Of Ai Models: Gpu-Aware Carbon Modeling, Youzhi Li Apr 2025

The Hidden Carbon Footprint Of Ai Models: Gpu-Aware Carbon Modeling, Youzhi Li

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2025

The rapid growth of AI technology has sparked transformative innovations but also increased carbon emissions. Recent research found that computer systems' carbon emissions are shifting from operational carbon to embodied carbon, but they did not fully capture the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Most recent research focused on operational carbon, neglecting the long-term environmental impact of embodied carbon. We found two gaps that persist in recent research. First, current carbon modeling focused on Central Processing Units (CPUs), neglecting the carbon modeling of Graphical Processing Units (GPUs). Second, it focused on primary components, neglecting significant contributions from peripheral components to the embodied …

Masculinity As Capitalism: Abuse, Control, And Domination Of The Earth In The Construction Of Gender Identity, J Guadalupe Dimayuga Apr 2025

Masculinity As Capitalism: Abuse, Control, And Domination Of The Earth In The Construction Of Gender Identity, J Guadalupe Dimayuga

Undergraduate Research Symposium 2025

This presentation explores the intersection of masculinity, capitalism, and ecological domination, arguing that hegemonic masculinity cannot be dismantled without addressing the capitalist system perpetuating it. Western feminist literature critiques masculinity and its manifestations but often overlooks capitalism as the root cause, thus failing to dismantle it and provide meaningful alternatives. Through an analysis of ecological and Marxist feminist texts, this presentation argues for a feminist philosophy that integrates the two for a more nuanced understanding of masculinity. This philosophy is supported by highlighting the ways in which capitalism enforces exploitation, control, and domination within gender identity. By integrating Indigenous perspectives …

Preventing Loneliness And Increasing Student Engagement In First-Generation College Students, Kya Cousino, Paige Hammarstrom Apr 2025

Preventing Loneliness And Increasing Student Engagement In First-Generation College Students, Kya Cousino, Paige Hammarstrom

SPARK Symposium Presentations

As higher education institutions work to diversify and expand their student populations, one topic that requires ongoing consideration is retention rates. First-generation college students make up a significant portion of undergraduate classes (Skomsvald, 2015); however, they are also the population least likely to see their degrees to completion (Radunzel, 2021). This suggests there may be barriers keeping these students from collegiate success, which we predicted to be loneliness and a lack of student engagement (Barreto et al., 2021; Peplau & Perlman, 1982). This study investigated several predictors of student engagement via loneliness in first-generation college students. First-generation college students (N …

Cloud Computing Adoption And Sustaining Strategies For A Texas Financial Institution, Scott Mccullock Apr 2025

Cloud Computing Adoption And Sustaining Strategies For A Texas Financial Institution, Scott Mccullock

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Security risks during the migration of information technology (IT) applications to the cloud represent a significant challenge for the financial sector. Banking IT leaders have expressed concern that these security risks are a primary factor contributing to the low implementation of cloud computing. Grounded in the technology acceptance model, the purpose of this qualitative single case study was to identify and explore effective strategies that banking IT leaders use to mitigate security risks associated with migrating and sustaining banking software applications in the cloud. The participants were four banking IT leaders from a regional Texas bank. Data were collected through …

Early Detection Of Colon Cancer Through Colonoscopy: Analysis Of Tumor Size And Resection Length, Alyssa Haddock Apr 2025

Early Detection Of Colon Cancer Through Colonoscopy: Analysis Of Tumor Size And Resection Length, Alyssa Haddock

Honors Theses

Colon cancer remains a leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States, with early detection critical for improved outcomes. Colonoscopy is a primary screening tool that can reduce incidence rates through the identification and removal of precancerous polyps. This study examines how undergoing a colonoscopy prior to diagnosis impacts two key surgical outcomes: tumor size and colon resection length. Data were collected from 70 de-identified patients who underwent colon resection for colon cancer between 2019 and 2024 at two regional hospitals in East Texas: Hunt Regional Medical Center and Mother Christus Frances Hospital. Using pathology reports, tumor size and …

Milk Composition Variability In Texas Dairy Farms Over Time, Emma Van Dieden Apr 2025

Milk Composition Variability In Texas Dairy Farms Over Time, Emma Van Dieden

Honors Theses

The composition of milk plays a vital role in determining the quality of dairy products. However, there has been limited research on how key milk components have changed over time in the diverse production regions of Texas. This thesis seeks to achieve two main goals: first, to quantify long-term trends from 2007 to 2022 in butterfat percentage, protein percentage, and somatic cell count (SCC) across the ten Texas Dairy Marketing regions, and second, to assess whether the differences observed in these indicators across regions are statistically significant. Data from the USDA Southwest Milk Marketing Area provided insights at the regional …
