The Use Of Stress Testing In Evaluating Systemic Risk: Lessons From The Global Financial Crisis, Katherine Laws
The Use Of Stress Testing In Evaluating Systemic Risk: Lessons From The Global Financial Crisis, Katherine Laws
Honors Theses
This paper examines the role of stress testing as a crucial tool for assessing systemic risk in the financial system, particularly in the aftermath of the global financial crisis. The global financial crisis, which unfolded between 2007 and 2009, exposed significant vulnerabilities within financial institutions and highlighted the inadequacies of existing risk management frameworks. In response, regulators and financial institutions increasingly turned to stress testing to evaluate the resilience of financial systems against economic shocks.
The paper will begin by defining systemic risk and the importance of effective risk assessment strategies. The paper will outline how stress testing can simulate …

The Difference In Financial Literacy Between Students Of The Business College And The Rest Of The Student Body At Wmu, Ivane Mkheidze
Honors Theses
This thesis investigates the persistent gap in financial literacy among high school and college students, despite increased emphasis on financial education over recent decades. Drawing inspiration from Lewis Mandell’s studies, including “Financial Literacy: If It’s So Important, Why Isn’t It Improving?”, the research evaluates the effectiveness of financial literacy courses and highlights their failure to produce long-term gains in knowledge or behavioral change. Through a synthesis of academic literature and critique of methodologies, the thesis explores the inefficacy of current teaching models, including overreliance on engagement tools like the Stock Market Game, and the influence of socio-economic factors, motivation, and …

AimsWe aimed to investigate phenotypic and genomic traits of three Cupriavidus spp. isolates recovered from people with cystic fibrosis (PWCF). These bacteria are recognised as emerging pathogens in PWCF.Methods and ResultsUsing short and long sequencing reads, we assembled three hybrid complete genomes for the genus Cupriavidus, adding to the 45 published currently, describing multipartite genomes and plasmids. The isolates likely represent three different species, and they carry a cumulative total of 30 ARGs with high homology to well-characterised resistance determinants from other bacteria. Multidrug resistance to antibiotics used in CF management was observed in all three isolates. However, two treatments …

High-density probes allow electrophysiological recordings from many neurons simultaneously across entire brain circuits but fail to reveal cell type. Here, we develop a strategy to identify cell types from extracellular recordings in awake animals and reveal the computational roles of neurons with distinct functional, molecular, and anatomical properties. We combine optogenetics and pharmacology using the cerebellum as a testbed to generate a curated ground-truth library of electrophysiological properties for Purkinje cells, molecular layer interneurons, Golgi cells, and mossy fibers. We train a semi-supervised deep learning classifier that predicts cell types with greater than 95% accuracy based on the waveform, discharge …

Non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) can be managed by ischemia guide strategies or early invasive strategies. Here, we present the findings of an updated contemporary analysis regarding the use of intracoronary imaging (ICI)-guided PCI versus angiography-guided PCI and in-hospital mortality in patients with NSTEMI in the United States using the NIS database from 2016 to 2021. ICI use increased by nearly threefold between 2016 and 2021, without a significant difference in in-hospital mortality, though interestingly, mortality rates compared with angiography guidance were similar and relatively low. In this study, the use of ICI was associated with lower adjusted odds of …

The RNA exosome plays critical roles in eukaryotic RNA degradation, but how it specifically recognizes its targets remains unclear. The poly(A) tail exosome targeting (PAXT) connection is a nuclear adaptor that recruits the exosome to polyadenylated RNAs, especially transcripts polyadenylated at intronic poly(A) sites. Here, we show that PAXT-mediated RNA degradation is induced by the combination of a 5' splice site (ss) and a poly(A) junction (PAJ) but not by either sequence alone. These sequences are bound by U1 small nuclear ribonucleoprotein particle (snRNP) and cleavage/polyadenylation factors, which, in turn, cooperatively recruit PAXT. As the 5' ss-PAJ combination is typically …

Lipid dysregulation within sebaceous glands is a critical factor underlying the pathogenesis of sebaceous gland disorders, particularly acne vulgaris. Sebaceous glands synthesize and secrete a complex mixture of lipids, including triglycerides, wax esters, free fatty acids, and sphingolipids, which contribute to skin barrier function and microbial homeostasis. Dysregulated lipid production, characterized by increased sebum secretion and altered lipid composition, has been implicated in promoting Cutibacterium acnes proliferation, hyperkeratinization, and inflammation, key processes in acne pathogenesis. Recent research highlights the pivotal role of sphingolipid metabolism, particularly ceramides, in modulating sebaceous gland activity and skin inflammation. Ceramide deficiencies in acne-prone skin contribute …

Efficient clearance of central nervous system (CNS) waste proteins and appropriate immune surveillance is essential for brain health. These processes are facilitated by lymphatic networks present in the meninges that drain cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Age-related impairments to meningeal lymphatic drainage contribute to CNS waste accumulation and immune dysfunction, yet the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we identify extracellular matrix (ECM) remodeling in the aged dura as a key driver of CSF clearance deficits, demonstrating that peri-lymphatic collagen accumulation disrupts lymphatic function. Exploring immune-derived factors contributing to this ECM remodeling, we identify transforming growth factor beta 1 (TGFβ1) as a …

Can Kirana Stores Compete In India's E-Commerce Revolution? Rethinking Traditional Retail In The Digital Age, Anshi Jindal, Ashwarya Kapoor
Management Dynamics
E-commerce has reshaped the global retail landscape bringing both disruptions and opportunities specifically in emerging markets like India. This paper explores the evolution of e-commerce in India and its impact on traditional retail particularly unorganized Kirana stores. By analysing market trends, consumer behaviour and policy implications, the study examines how conventional retailers are adapting to digital transformation. Using Reliance Retail’s JioMart initiative as a case study, it provides insights into the integration of digital and physical retail ecosystems. While e-commerce challenges Kirana stores, it also fosters innovation, growth and the emergence of hybrid retail models.

Hyperspectral images are used in remote sensing scientific research and more, but they can reach hundreds of megabytes in size. This large number of datasets creates a problem with the limited storage capacity and bandwidth available on the satellite which in turn necessitates the use of hyperspectral image compression algorithms. The near lossless CCSDS123 hyperspectral algorithm provides a high compression capability, but it has some data dependencies in its predictor module that slows down the compression process. This Master of Science (MSc) thesis focuses on implementing a parallel, real-time FPGA based architecture of the near lossless CCSDS123 compression standard. The …
