Vigilante Justice Violence In Ghana: Does A Visible Police Force Reduce Support For Instant Justice?, John Ampomah Apr 2025

Vigilante Justice Violence In Ghana: Does A Visible Police Force Reduce Support For Instant Justice?, John Ampomah

Theses

Vigilante justice remains a persistent issue in Ghana, with a significant portion of Ghanaians subscribing to it to address their grievances. While existing research has examined the social and cultural drivers of vigilante justice in Ghana, the role of visible police presence (i.e., police station and police patrol) on vigilante justice has received limited attention. This study seeks to add to the literature by exploring the relationship between visible police presence and support for vigilante justice by drawing on Black’s (1983) Self-Help Theory. First, I argue that a visible police force directly reduces public support for vigilante justice and indirectly …

Primary Care Telehealth In A Dynamic Healthcare Environment From Digital Divide To Healthcare Outcomes, Yunxi Zhang, Lincy S Lal, Saurabh Chandra, John Michael Swint Apr 2025

Primary Care Telehealth In A Dynamic Healthcare Environment From Digital Divide To Healthcare Outcomes, Yunxi Zhang, Lincy S Lal, Saurabh Chandra, John Michael Swint

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

With expanded telehealth availability in primary care, its impact on quality of care and associated costs remains debated. Analyzing 199,829 Medicare beneficiaries in Mississippi (2019-2021), we found telehealth utilization associated with significant sociodemographic disparities, reduced inpatient admissions, and lower 30-day readmissions. By accounting for primary care utilization, our findings suggest that the higher absolute costs observed among telehealth users may reflect underlying healthcare needs rather than telehealth utilization.

Uav Path Planning Based On Improved Deep Deterministic Policy Gradients, Sen Zhang, Qiangqiang Dai

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Aiming at the problems of poor convergence and invalid exploration when UAVs perform path planning in complex environments, an improved deep deterministic policy gradient(DDPG) algorithm is proposed. Using a dual experience pooling mechanism to store success and failure experiences separately, the algorithm is able to use the success experience to strengthen the strategy optimization and learn from the failure experience to avoid the wrong path; an APF method is introduced to add a bootstrap term to the planning, which is combined with the exploration of noisy actions in a randomized sampling process to dynamically integrate the selected actions; multi-objective …

A Radar Countermeasure Modeling Method Incorporating Cognitive Bias, Rui Wang, Xiangyang Li, Dong Wang, Hongguang Ma, Zhili Zhang

Journal of System Simulation

Abstract: Cognitive bias, stemming from electronic measurement error and variability in human perception, exists in cognitive electronic warfare and affects the outcomes of conflicts. In this paper, the dynamic game approach is employed to develop a model for cognitive bias induced by incomplete information and measurement errors in cognitive radar countermeasures. The payoffs for both parties are calculated using the radar's anti-jamming strategy matrix A and the jammer's jamming strategy matrix B. With perfect Bayesian equilibrium, a dynamic radar countermeasure model is established, and the impact of cognitive bias is analyzed. Drawing inspiration from the cognitive bias analysis method used …

The Roles Of Cup1, Ssu1, And Mitochondrial Dna In Copper Tolerance In Wild Yeasts, Madeleine Panek Apr 2025

The Roles Of Cup1, Ssu1, And Mitochondrial Dna In Copper Tolerance In Wild Yeasts, Madeleine Panek

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Understanding the genetic basis of complex traits remains a central challenge in biology. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, copper resistance is a multifactorial trait shaped by both genetic and environmental influences, yet its underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. The genes CUP1 and SSU1 are known to influence copper resistance, though how these genes interact with each other and with mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) variation in wild yeast populations is unknown. I hypothesized that the genes CUP1 and SSU1 and variation in mtDNAs contribute to copper resistance in wild yeasts independently and through genetic interactions. To test this, I measured copper resistance …

Structural neuroplasticity in the brain may contribute to the persistence of low back pain (LBP) symptoms and the disability associated with them. It is not known if structural adaptations are evident early in the lifespan in young adults with LBP. This study compared gray matter in cortical sensorimotor regions in young adults with and without persistent LBP and identified gray matter and clinical predictors of pain-related disability. Eighty-two individuals with and without a history of LBP participated. Peak and average gray matter density in cortical sensorimotor regions of interest was quantified using voxel-based morphometry. Pain-related disability, pain intensity, pain duration, …

Lived Experiences Of School Counselors Regarding Applications Of Multicultural And Social Justice Advocacy, Michele Lynn Apr 2025

Lived Experiences Of School Counselors Regarding Applications Of Multicultural And Social Justice Advocacy, Michele Lynn

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

School counseling literature claimed that school counselors were trained in multicultural and social justice advocacy and were uniquely positioned within the school system as change agents. School counseling research had not explored school counselors’ experiences when applying their ethical responsibilities of multicultural and social justice advocacy. This hermeneutic qualitative phenomenological study explored the lived experiences of school counselors working in the education system regarding ethical practices of multicultural and social justice advocacy. The research question was: How do school counselors experience their social justice and multicultural advocacy roles within the education system? Three theories composed this study’s foundation: hermeneutic phenomenology, …

Treatments For Opioid Use Disorder: Perspectives Of Patients In Long-Term Recovery, Robert Florian

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

The contemporary landscape of substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder, presents a complex and pressing public health concern, marked by escalating rates of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Although extensive research has been conducted on the efficacy of interventions for opioid use disorder, a notable research gap exists concerning the perspectives of individuals in long-term recovery (defined as exceeding 2 years). Specifically, how these individuals view pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment approaches remains largely unexplored in the existing literature. Grounded in the biopsychosocial model, this study investigates patients’ perceptions of medication-assisted treatment and abstinence-based therapies. Purposive sampling was utilized, and participants …

Lipid Dysregulation In Sebaceous Gland Disorders And The Impact Of Sphingolipid Metabolism On Acne Pathogenesis, Kaitlyn Miner, Ryan Murphy, Samantha Steiss, Mckenzie Burian, Hannah Welp, Alexandra Loperfito, Ashley O'Malley, Radhika Misra, Kelly Frasier

Student Publications

Lipid dysregulation within sebaceous glands is a critical factor underlying the pathogenesis of sebaceous gland disorders, particularly acne vulgaris. Sebaceous glands synthesize and secrete a complex mixture of lipids, including triglycerides, wax esters, free fatty acids, and sphingolipids, which contribute to skin barrier function and microbial homeostasis. Dysregulated lipid production, characterized by increased sebum secretion and altered lipid composition, has been implicated in promoting Cutibacterium acnes proliferation, hyperkeratinization, and inflammation, key processes in acne pathogenesis. Recent research highlights the pivotal role of sphingolipid metabolism, particularly ceramides, in modulating sebaceous gland activity and skin inflammation. Ceramide deficiencies in acne-prone skin contribute …

Hypomethylating agent (HMA) plus venetoclax (VEN) regimens are standard of care in patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) ineligible for intensive chemotherapy. While the VEN label recommends continuous 28-day cycles, shortened VEN durations may induce similar response rates and improve tolerability. It is unknown how a VEN exposure reduced to 7 days during cycles compares to standard HMA + VEN. We retrospectively compared newly diagnosed AML patients treated with azacitidine (AZA) x 7 days plus VEN x 7 days ("7 + 7" regimen) from the first cycle (n = 82) vs patients treated with standard dose HMA + VEN (std-HMA/VEN) …

Humanized Saccharomyces Cerevisiae Provides A Facile And Effective Tool To Identify Damaging Human Variants That Cause Exosomopathies, Khondakar Sayef Ahammed, Milo B Fasken, Anita H Corbett, Ambro Van Hoof

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

The RNA exosome is an evolutionarily conserved, multiprotein complex that is the major RNase in 3' processing and degradation of a wide range of RNAs in eukaryotes. Single amino acid changes in RNA exosome subunits cause rare genetic diseases collectively called exosomopathies. However, distinguishing disease-causing variants from nonpathogenic ones remains challenging, and the mechanism by which these variants cause disease is largely unknown. Previous studies have employed a budding yeast model of RNA exosome-linked diseases that relies on mutating the orthologous yeast genes. Here, we develop a humanized yeast model of exosomopathies that allows us to unambiguously assess damaging effects …

Designing An Optimal Thermal Preference Arena For Southern Cricket Frog (Acris Gryllus) Juveniles, Eleanor E. Briggs, David M. Phillips Jr.

Honors Theses

Climate change has been altering ecosystems across the world at a substantial rate, disrupting the delicate ecophysiological relationships between ecosystems and the organisms that live in them. Ectotherms, such as amphibians, rely on external temperatures to behaviorally thermoregulate, making it especially imperative to study their thermal biology. Thermal preference, which assesses the environmental temperature an organism would seek out in the absence of external stimuli, provides valuable information about an amphibian’s thermal biology and can be used to predict the effects of climate change on a species or population. A commonly used method to measure thermal preference is an arena …

In this nuisance holdover proceeding, the landlord alleged two isolated incidents involving the tenant's guests "one in October 2023 involving a guest who banged on the apartment door, and one in February 2024 involving a verbal dispute in the lobby. The tenant moved to dismiss under CPLR § 3211(a)(7), arguing that the termination notice failed to state a cause of action for nuisance under Rent Stabilization Code § 2524.3(b). The court agreed, citing the settled principle that nuisance requires a pattern of recurring objectionable conduct. It found that the two incidents, months apart and involving guests rather than the tenant, …
