Project G.L.E.N., formally known as “Refining Enhanced Fujita Wind Estimates via Unmanned Collection of In-Situ Tornadic Data Measurements,” is an ongoing initiative aimed at advancing tornado research through the development and deployment of an unmanned tornado probe. Through the Gale Level Environmental Navigator (G.L.E.N.) probe, a remote-controlled unit equipped with specialized meteorological sensors and innovative design features, we aim to collect real-time, onsite data from within tornadoes. This approach allows for direct measurement of internal atmospheric conditions such as wind speeds, pressure fluctuations, temperature, humidity, and other storm dynamics while removing human risk from tornado interception, significantly enhancing …

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) are abundant in many regions of South Florida and produce toxins that pose significant health concerns for wildlife and surrounding human communities. Often blooming in warmer months due to a variety of environmental and anthropogenic factors, HABs can have detrimental effects on wildlife ecosystems, tourism and aquaculture infrastructure, and numerous other socioeconomic factors. Current monitoring techniques of HABs are limited in both safety and utility: satellite remote sensing lacks sufficiently high spatiotemporal resolution to be useful for HAB prediction and modeling, and crewed boat sampling is inefficient, disturbs HABs by introducing confounding mixing effects, and presents …

Rapidly shifting atmospheric phenomena, such as microbursts and clear-air turbulence, pose significant risks to low-altitude flight operations. These risks are pronounced for unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) and general aviation aircraft, including fixed-wing platforms and turboprop aircraft. Current forecasting systems usually lack the spatial and temporal resolution to detect localized threats in real time. This research focuses on the design and development of an aircraft-mounted atmospheric sensing system. It uses machine learning to classify flight risks. The system combines barometric pressure, temperature, and humidity data from a DPS310 pressure sensor and a BME180 environmental sensor. An embedded computer allows continuous in-flight …
