In the twenty-first century, it is common to see feminists and pro-sex work voices lauding prostitution and other forms of the sex industry as viable expressions of women’s sexual and financial agency. As long as every participating party consents, they argue, sex work is not only tolerable, but admirable and positive – a form of transaction or service deserving license, protection, and respect in the name of individual freedom and female agency. Sexual characteristics and reproductive systems are dynamic traits in many taxa, but the developmental modifications that allow change and innovation are largely unknown. A leading model for this process is the evolution of self-fertile hermaphrodites from male/female ancestors. However, these studies require direct analysis of sex-determination in male/female species, as well as in the hermaphroditic species that are related to them. In Caenorhabditis nematodes this has only become possible recently, with the discovery of new species. Here, we use gene editing to characterize major sex-determination genes in C. nigoni, a sister to the widely studied hermaphroditic species C. briggsae. These …

During the fall of 2023, Utah Women & Leadership Project (UWLP) researchers conducted a statewide study to establish a baseline for public perceptions related to the awareness, understanding, and attitudes about challenges that Utah women and girls face. In early 2024, UWLP published 20 research summaries¹ that shared the results of this comprehensive study. Then, in the fall of 2024, the survey was administered again around the state of Utah with slight refinements. Between January and April of 2025, we have shared the results of the 2024 data by releasing six white papers, this being the final report in …

The 2016 Presidential Election was unprecedented in its results. The predicted winner, Hillary Clinton, ended up winning the popular vote, but lost in the Electoral College count to Donald Trump. I examine voting for the winner, Donald Trump, and what factors caused people to vote for him or for another candidate. Although there are several factors that go into how people vote, I analyze demographic, geographic, and ideological predictors for why people voted the way they did. To do this, I will run a regression model on my dataset. Since my dependent variable is dichotomous, meaning there are only two …

These slides are from a presentation to the Academic Librarians' Caucus of the Medical Library Association covering the Research Discipline Skeletons, a multidisciplinary tool developed by the author during their MLIS practicum. The presentation discussed the need for the Skeletons as a tool, the history behind it's creation, an example Skeleton in the field of Athletic Training, how to build a Skeleton, and other considerations.

Abstract: In order to study the applicability of Track Segment Association (TSA) algorithms in actual radar working environment , a TSA simulation environment which can simulate the real movement of the target is constructed. By constructing a rich set of target motion sets, the state switching process of target motion is described based on Markov state transition matrix, and the density is flexibly controlled through track translation. The simulation results show that this environment can evaluate the performance of the current classical TSA algorithms. The evaluation results provide a good reference for the practical engineering application of interrupted track association.

Network intrusion detection systems (IDS) typically analyze complete network flows to identify malicious traffic, requiring flows to conclude before classification. This approach creates detection delays for attacks like Slowloris that intentionally keep connections open for extended periods of time. This paper introduces a novel approach that classifies network traffic using only features available from the first few packets of a flow, enabling faster detection while maintaining high accuracy. We evaluate three random forest models on the CICIDS2017 dataset using expanding sets of features: the first-packet model trained on on features available from the first backward packet, the few-packet model which …

Of these foreign operatives, Russia and China have shown the ability to use advanced tactics to truly affect the United States security. Often these tools came in the form of state-sponsored media, influence campaigns and fake online identities. This literature review explores the evolution of Russian and Chinese disinformation tactics, examining how these approaches have changed over time and become more sophisticated. Background: Myosin Vb (Myo5b) is an essential molecular motor responsible for delivering diverse cargo to the apical membrane of enterocytes. Mutations in Myo5b cause congenital enteropathies, but its broader role in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal brush border under normal physiological conditions and in disease remain unclear. We hypothesize that Myo5b participates in the assembly and maintenance of the intestinal brush border by transporting members of the intermicrovillar adhesion complex (IMAC) and the xenobiotic efflux pump P-glycoprotein (P-gp) to the apical membrane of enterocytes. The purpose of this scoping review is to review the use of an algorithm in evaluating continuous external fetal heart rate (FHR) monitoring in labor as opposed to clinician judgment for improved fetal outcomes, including earlier recognition of abnormal tracings (Clark et al., 2017). FHR monitoring was created to evaluate for fetal hypoxia in labor and has become standard practice (Gyllencreutz et al., 2018). One of the goals of the use of cardiotocography is to decrease hypoxia-induced fetal metabolic acidemia and neurologic injury. Intimate partner violence is a significant and widespread social issue with far-reaching personal, societal, and economic consequences. Nonfatal strangulation is an act of violence that is considered a strong predictor of homicide within violent relationships. While research about nonfatal strangulation has improved, there is still limited knowledge about individuals who commit acts of strangulation within violent relationships. This study was an investigation of demographic characteristics of male individuals who commit acts of strangulation within intimate relationships. Prior research established a positive correlation between childhood abuse and sexually motivated murders, and childhood abuse is considered a risk factor for serial murder, especially for sexually motivated serial murder. The purpose of this quantitative study was to assess whether a predictive relationship exists between childhood abuse types (physical, sexual, and psychological) and MacDonald triad behaviors (enuresis, fire setting, and animal cruelty) in predicting sexual homicide subtypes (sexualized, grievance, and rape murder) in a sample of male serial sexual homicide offenders.
