SPARK Symposium Presentations

Sincerely, is a personal study of how language is used to document and process past relationships. The work is my own experience with utilizing letter-writing to find closure with those whom the letters may never be sent. Through viewing the writing process and watching heartfelt messages write themselves out for none of the recipients to ever see, one can see how language and catharsis go hand in hand.

Waite And See: The Problem With Class Action Litigation To Enforce Copyright Termination Rights, Justice Slone

SPARK Symposium Presentations

Waite And See: The Problem With Class Action Litigation to Enforce Copyright Termination Rights is piece of legal scholarship written by Belmont College of Law’s Justice Slone. The article explores the various challenges that artists face when trying to exercise their rights of copyright termination. Copyright termination is a mechanism that was introduced as part of the Copyright Act of 1976 and allows authors who have transferred ownership of their copyrighted works to third parties to reclaim that ownership after 35 years. Often times, at the time that an artist is making a transfer of ownership, they have vastly inferior …

Nanopore Sequencing For The Detection And Preliminary Identification Of Viruses In Amblyomma Americanum L. (Acari: Ixodidae), Mary Katherine Humphrey, Lorenza Beati, Ella Zierdt, Saviour Dralabu

Honors College Theses

Hard-bodied ticks are known to carry a wide range of viruses, some of which can cause human diseases. In the U.S., the tick Amblyomma americanum is an important disease vector. The tick has recently expanded its distribution range and its abundance is rising in many areas of the U.S. Its virome is, however, largely underexplored. In this preliminary study, we used a Nanopore MinION sequencer to detect and identify the viral fauna in nymphal ticks (n=43) collected in Statesboro, GA. Extracted DNA and RNA were analyzed separately. Nucleic acids were pooled into 6 groups according to their collection dates and …

Beyond The Stars: 2001: A Space Odyssey And The Philosophical Dimensions Of Science Fiction Film, Angela Stalcup

Honors Theses

Science fiction (SF) films are typically some of the most popular movies that are released each year. They tend to be blockbuster phenomena, raking in millions or even billions of dollars. Examples of modern SF hits include Avatar (2009), which grossed $2,923,710,708 worldwide and Avengers: Endgame (2019), which grossed $2,799,439,100 worldwide (“Avatar”; “Avengers: Endgame”). The SF film genre itself has a history that begins as early as the 1890s when film as a medium developed alongside technological advances in image and sound. Throughout the genre’s long history, several tropes have remained prevalent, such as a concern with the future, along …

Feature Typology And L2 Proficiency Matter: L3 Acquisition Of Portuguese, Mila Tasseva-Kurktchieva, Danielle Fahey

Faculty Publications

To determine the source of transfer in third language acquisition (L3A), we tested the effects of grammatical feature typology and L2 Spanish proficiency on the comprehension and production of grammatical [gender] and [number] in the early stages of L3A of Portuguese. We distinguish between the two features based on their participation in the lexical-conceptual structure of the lemma and its interaction with the morpho-syntactic derivation. L1 English speakers were tested on their knowledge of the features in both their L2 and their L3 through a grammaticality judgment task and an elicited production task. Results show that L3 learners transfer only …

Transition Process Considerations For Collegiate Student-Athlete Sport Retirement, Lindsey Weatherford Apr 2025

Transition Process Considerations For Collegiate Student-Athlete Sport Retirement, Lindsey Weatherford

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study explores the transition process for collegiate student-athletes retiring from sport, particularly at small colleges or universities in the Midwest, where student-athlete enrollment is significant. The problem addressed is the lack of structured support systems to aid student-athletes in navigating this transition. This affects their psychological well-being, career preparedness, and overall life satisfaction. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to identify potential components for a transition process that assists student-athletes from recruitment through to retirement from sport and career post-graduation. Schlossberg’s transition theory served as the guiding theoretical framework, emphasizing identity transition, support systems, coping strategies, and …

Effects Of Chronic Metal Exposure And Metamorphosis On The Microbiomes Of Larval And Adult Insects And Riparian Spiders Through The Aquatic-Riparian Food Web, Brittany G. Perrotta, Karen A. Kidd, Amy Marcarelli, Gordon Paterson, David M. Walters Apr 2025

Walters

Michigan Tech Publications

The macroinvertebrate microbiome controls various aspects of the host's physiology, from regulation of environmental contaminants to reproductive output. Aquatic insects provide critical nutritional subsidies linking aquatic and riparian food webs while simultaneously serving as a contaminant pathway for riparian insectivores in polluted ecosystems. Previous studies have characterized the transport and transfer of contaminants from aquatic to riparian ecosystems through insect metamorphosis, but both contaminant exposure and metamorphosis are energetically intensive processes that may cause host microbiomes to undergo radical transformation in structure and function, potentially affecting the host's physiology. We collected arthropods from three sites within Torch Lake, a historical …

Exploring Non-Traditional Yeast For Flavor Innovation In Non-Alcoholic Beer, Andrew Maust, Rahul Sen, Scott Lafontaine

Food Science Faculty Publications and Presentations

The demand for nonalcoholic beer (NAB) is growing, with nontraditional yeast strains emerging as valuable tools for brewers to craft distinct NABs. However, independent information about the performance of these commercially available yeasts remains limited. In this study, 11 nontraditional yeast strains were evaluated at two wort nutrient levels to assess their impact on beer chemistry, sensory attributes, and volatile profiles. Basic fermentation metrics were monitored, followed by descriptive sensory analysis and GC-MS/MS quantification of volatile compounds. Results revealed significant differentiation among yeast strains with unique aroma and flavor profiles driven by variations in ester production, fusel alcohol synthesis, and …

The New Urban Agenda published by UN-Habitat establishes that SDG 11 urges governments to protect the world's urban and natural cultural heritage, setting forth soft measures aimed at culture and education. Among these, it promotes the safeguarding of tangible and intangible cultural heritage, including the use of new technologies, and emphasizes the preservation of local heritage in the face of the current process of global acculturation. Simultaneously, the European Commission’s Recommendation (EU) 2021/1970 states that heritage is a key element in building European identity and encourages Member States to continue their efforts to digitize and preserve Digital Cultural Heritage assets. …

A Case Of Unresectable Necrosis, Justin Wisely, Hassan Nasser

2025 Henry Ford Jackson Hospital Research Symposium

Introduction: Rectal necrosis is a rare phenomenon given profound collateral circulation. This carries significant morbidity and mortality. We present a case of acute rectal necrosis that is managed conservatively with surgical drainage. Case Description: A 53-year-old female with a history of peripheral arterial disease status post aorto-bifemoral bypass who presented in the emergency room with altered mental status and hypotension. She subsequently developed peritonitis prompting emergent surgical exploration. Her colon and rectum were noted be ischemic with patchy areas of necrosis. She underwent a total abdominal colectomy with an end ileostomy. The rectum was stapled at the rectosigmoid junction at …

Disentanglement In Representation Learning: Interpretability In Dimension Reduction With Vae, Minh Hong Vu Apr 2025

Disentanglement In Representation Learning: Interpretability In Dimension Reduction With Vae, Minh Hong Vu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This research explores both theoretical and practical aspects of disentangled representation learning by extending the VAE framework. We address the core challenge of extracting independent generative factors from observed data while preserving high reconstruction fidelity. To this end, we propose two novel VAE variants: (i) the $\lambda\beta$-VAE, which incorporates an additional $\ell^2$-norm reconstruction loss to improve accuracy, and (ii) the $\gamma\beta$-VAE, which introduces a mutual information regularization term to encourage independence across latent dimensions.

Our theoretical analysis is conducted in a linear Gaussian setting, where we derive optimal solutions for these VAE-based models. We further examine how varying levels of …

Supporting Health Equity In Obesity Prevention For Women Of Reproductive Age, Amanda Gilbert Apr 2025

Supporting Health Equity In Obesity Prevention For Women Of Reproductive Age, Amanda Gilbert

Brown School Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Women of reproductive age (18-44 years) are at an increased risk of developing obesity due to pregnancy, stressors during this stage in the life course (e.g., leaving home, new jobs, parenthood), and historical and ongoing discrimination and marginalization. Preventing obesity for this population needs to be a public health priority. Obesity negatively affects women’s health (e.g., chronic disease, cancer); leads to poor pregnancy outcomes (e.g., gestational diabetes); and increases the risk children will develop obesity through intergenerational transmission of obesity, further entrenching health disparities for future generations. Health equity principles of social justice and human rights help obesity prevention researchers …
