Establishing Particle Size Recommendations For Cationic Asphalt Emulsions, Tanner Turben, Pedro Diaz-Romero, Andrew Braham
Civil Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations
Asphalt emulsions are used in flexible pavement maintenance and rehabilitation treatments. Emulsion specifications for material characterization are based on testing methodology dating to the 1930s. Newer test methods, including particle size analysis (PSA) of binder droplets in emulsion, have been explored but not implemented into specifications. The objective of this study is to observe the particle size and performance of cationic slow-setting (CSS) emulsions and establish baseline particle size recommendations for cationic emulsions. Four physical property tests (residue, oversize particles, viscosity, and particle size) and two cold mix asphalt performance tests (indirect tensile strength (IDT) and direct shear test (DST)) …

Stability, Binding, And Charge Localization In Amorphous Tin Monoxide: A-Sno And A-Sn-Ta-O With Variable Composition, Julia E. Medvedeva, Joshua Santy, Mathew Pollard
Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works
The structural, electronic, and optical properties of amorphous SnO and Sn-Ta-O (with Sn:Ta ratios 5:1, 3:2, and 1:2) are investigated as a function of density and metal composition using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and hybrid functional calculations. The short- and medium-range structures of amorphous oxides are thoroughly studied by calculating the effective coordination numbers, effective distances, distortion, and their time variances for metal-oxygen (M-O), O-M, M-M shells, the M-O-M and O-M-O angle distribution, as well as the volume, shape, and distribution of structural voids. Disorder is found to suppress both Sn-O and Sn-Sn coordination but not the O-Sn coordination. …

Sustainable Forage Yield Improvement Through Perennial Grass–Legume Intercropping In Degraded Grasslands, Alina-Ștefania Stanciu
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Grasslands constitute one of the largest terrestrial biomes, providing essential ecosystem services such as biodiversity preservation, food production, and climate change mitigation. Globally, the desertification and degradation of grasslands have been accelerated by intensified land use and climate change. It is crucial to conserve and restore grasslands to address climate and biodiversity challenges. However, due to their diverse nature and undervalued benefits for humans, grasslands have often been overlooked in terms of preservation, conservation, and restoration compared to forests. In sustainable agriculture, intercropping grasses with legumes can enhance crop nutritional quality, increase productivity, and impact soil microbiological activity, ultimately leading …

In agricultural crops, leaves play crucial roles in plant physiology, providing information on both the quantity and quality of future production. They also serve as indicators for diagnosing foliar diseases. Detecting plant diseases through image reading and computer vision in a specific format allows for both quantitative and qualitative studies, which is a key step in diagnosing diseases using images of leaves exhibiting symptoms specific to a pathogen. In this study, we present an approach that integrates digital image processing to assess the extent of turnip yellows virus (genus Polerovirus, family Solemoviridae) infection in oilseed rape. This study focuses on …
Historicist Politics: Hegel And Foucault On Normativity And The Modal Constitution Of History, Samuel Munroe
Historicist Politics: Hegel And Foucault On Normativity And The Modal Constitution Of History, Samuel Munroe
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
I have two central aims in this dissertation. First, I argue that Hegel and Foucault’s deepest disagreements should be understood in terms of their different approaches to the themes of normativity and the modal constitution of history. My central interpretative claim with respect to Hegel is that the expressivist modal theory that he lays out in the “Actuality” chapter of his Logic structures the historicist dimensions of his work. Incorporating that modal theory into his conception of the uniquely self-conscious character of spirit yields three concepts arranged diachronically in what he calls “experience”, which I refer to as self-problematization, normative …

Exploring The Sequences And Structures Of Intrinsically Disordered Proteins And Polymers, Hossain Shadman
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Intrinsically Disordered Proteins (IDPs) are proteins without stable three-dimensional structures. These conformationally flexible proteins form a substantial portion of the eukaryotic proteome and are frequently associated with devastating human conditions such as Alzheimer’s and cancer. There has been significant interest in IDPs in recent decades, given the important roles they play in biological systems. Here, we examine sequences, structures, and functions of IDPs. We explore the sequence-structure-function relationships of protamines (known IDPs), specifically looking at three well-known protamine sequences (salmon, human P1 and bull P1). Using a simple scatter plot of radius of gyration (Rg) and instantaneous shape ratio (Rs), …

Sons Of Macho And Other Messes, Jacob Williams
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Sons of Macho and Other Messes is an invitation to explore masculinity and its role in society today through a voice of imagination, vulnerability, and hope. Every story here, in its own working, reckons with the way that our society passes down the systems of patriarchy through domestic relationships, especially between parents and children. The characters in these stories are pushed to explore the role of these relationships in how they have developed as human beings and how they perceive the world around them. All of these dynamics are traumatic, but they are all hopeful as well. Through the use …

Most adults have experienced at least one traumatic event, which can impact emotion competencies. Limited research exists examining how childhood emotion socialization, which forms regulatory skills, and current emotion regulation function together after trauma exposure. This study used latent profile analysis to identify subgroups of emerging adult college students based on their lifetime trauma exposure, recalled emotion socialization towards anger and sadness, and current use of cognitive reappraisal and experiential avoidance. Two latent profiles emerged: (1) the Lower Trauma, Supported group whose parents engaged in more modeling and coaching of negative emotions, and (2) the Higher Trauma, Mixed Socialization Behaviors …
An Examination Of The Unique Characteristics Of Black Women In Childcare Who Teach In The Communities In Which They Live, Angela Janelle Jones
An Examination Of The Unique Characteristics Of Black Women In Childcare Who Teach In The Communities In Which They Live, Angela Janelle Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Black women have been the pillar of early childhood education since 1619. Today, Black women continue to be a vital part of the early childhood education workforce in the United States. Unfortunately, while Black women are overrepresented in the early childhood education field, as teachers, they are often unrepresented in decision-making policies in the field. Black women childcare teachers are among the lowest paid workers in the early education sector and they are thusly unrepresented when it comes to equalizing compensation, creating pipelines for childcare teacher advancement, and access to classroom resources. While there is much research on the racist …
Exploring The Lived Experiences Of African American Students Enrolled In Developmental Education Programs At Community Colleges, Marilyn Hayes-Barbee
Exploring The Lived Experiences Of African American Students Enrolled In Developmental Education Programs At Community Colleges, Marilyn Hayes-Barbee
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
There has been an overrepresentation of African American students enrolled in developmental education programs at community colleges for many years. As a result, African American students often drop these courses, leave college, and do not persist to degree attainment. There is limited research on African American students’ voices in developmental education, and no attention to the overrepresentation of Black students in the program, which reveals a gap in the current literature. Drawing on Critical Race Theory in Education (Ladson-Billings & Tate, 1998), the purpose of this qualitative study is to describe the lived experiences of African American adult students enrolled …
