Atomization of non-Newtonian, high-viscosity fluids is a challenging task with many applications. One method of atomizing these types of flows is the Wave Augmented Varicose Explosions (WAVE) atomizer. Using this framework, the study establishes an analysis methodology, investigates the relationship between 2D axisymmetric (2DA) and 3D models, and provides analysis of geometric, non-geometric, and non-dimensional parameter influences on the atomizer characterization in 2DA models. The study found that 2DA models can provide viable predictions of certain 3D model characteristics, established several mathematical models for parameter relationships among 2DA models, and identified certain metrics as inadequate predictors of atomizer characteristics in …

In the early 2000s, consumer trends increasingly influenced corporations to engage in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). More recently, however, this trend has shown signs of reversing, which is puzzling, given that engagement in CSR may lead to enhanced company financial performance through channels of competitive advantage or risk reduction. Using event study methods, I analyze how investors respond to signals in the form of third-party recognitions for companies’ CSR activities. Third-party recognitions, may provide new information, altering investor behaviors and decision making. Halide perovskite quantum dots (HPQDs) have attracted considerable attention for optoelectronic applications due to their outstanding optical properties, including high photoluminescent quantum yield (PLQY), tunable band gap, high absorption coefficients, etc. However, their practical implementation is limited by poor stability under ambient conditions such as moisture, heat, and light. Aging is an irreversible process characterized by progressive physiological decline and an increased risk of metabolic disorders, cognitive impairment, cardiovascular diseases, and neurodegeneration. Disruptions to the circadian clock—whether due to genetic mutations or behavioral factors—accelerate aging and age-related pathologies, highlighting a strong link between circadian regulation and longevity. However, certain individuals harbor a dec2^P384R mutation, which enables natural short sleep without the detrimental effects of chronic sleep deprivation. Self-esteem refers to the overall evaluation–positive or negative–that people have about themselves. Researchers have reported self-esteem to be increasing generationally among the general population. The purpose of the proposed study was to examine the association between race, gender, and self-esteem, to test whether levels of self-esteem vary based on one’s identity. Data from the University of Michigan’s Monitoring the Future study was analyzed to test for race and gender differences in self-esteem across generational cohorts. The Monitoring the Future Study questionnaire includes elements of the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Over 120,000 responses were collected from 12th graders between 1976 and 2022. …

Listeria monocytogenes is a Gram-positive, intracellular pathogen responsible for the deadly foodborne illness listeriosis. It is known to express different virulence factors in response to different environmental factors, influencing how the pathogen interacts with the host immune system. From food packaging to digestion, L. monocytogenes is exposed to many different environmental conditions. My honors thesis research focused on two conditions—cold storage and the presence of antimicrobial food additives—and how these conditions affect immune responses against L. monocytogenes. We investigate high-frequency microwave spectroscopy as a probe of the electronic structure of graphene, focusing on compressibility, magnetic response, and the potential for detection applications. Graphene is a single layer of carbon atoms arranged in a hexagonal lattice, exhibiting unique electronic properties due to its band structure and reduced dimensionality. While traditional compressibility measurements rely on low-frequency capacitance techniques, this thesis explores a high-frequency approach using superconducting resonators to probe the compressibility of graphene in the GHz regime. Carved by glaciers and molded by modern fluvial forces, the Genesee Valley in Livingston County, New York offers a scenic environment for geophysical surveying to determine the elevation of Devonian aged bedrock below surficial Quaternary deposits. Surveying and calculations were performed with a Worden Gravimeter, a Bad Elf Flex® Mini, and the software programs QGIS, Microsoft’s Copilot and Excel, and Python v3.12. Portions of Fowlerville Road, U.S. Route 20A, and Mount Morris Geneseo Road were chosen because they are oriented nearly perpendicular to the Genesee Valley. Gravestones can give vital information such as date of birth, date of death, sex/gender, occupation, religious affiliation, and, implicitly, social and cultural values of the community at large (Dethlefsen and Deetz, 1966; Sattenspiel and Stoops, 2010). In this holdover proceeding, the court denied petitioner’s motion to amend the petition to conform with the General Court of the City of New York's Emergency Law (GCEL) pleading requirements. Although the second amended petition asserted the premises were exempt from GCEL coverage, it failed to include the requisite ownership disclosures—specifically, the identities of all property owners and the properties they own. Due to this pleading defect, the court dismissed the petition. The case underscores the strict compliance required with GCEL’s procedural mandates when asserting exemptions from coverage.

Objectives: To examine the associations between antidiabetic medication type and a new episode of depression using 100% Texas Medicare database during 2009 and 2018.

Design: A retrospective cohort study.

Setting: A population-based study using the Texas Medicare data.

Interventions: 11 common antihyperglycaemic medication types, alone and in combinations: metformin-only, five non-metformin-containing regimens (dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitor (DPP4i) only, sulfonylureas (SU) only, thiazolidinediones (TZD) only, SU/DPP4i and SU/TZD) and five metformin-containing combination treatments (metformin/DPP4i, metformin/SU, metformin/TZD, metformin/SU/DPP4i and metformin/SU/TZD).

Background: Percutaneous vertebral augmentation techniques, including vertebroplasty, kyphoplasty, and bone tumor radiofrequency ablation (BT-RFA), are commonly used to treat painful vertebral compression fractures (VCFs). While generally safe and effective, they carry risks, including cement extravasation, which can lead to pulmonary embolism or spinal cord compression. This study aims to compare the rate of cement extravasation across different vertebral augmentation techniques and identify potential risk factors.

Abstract: Trust remains fundamental to an audience’s engagement with digital journalism, yet research has predominantly focused on Western contexts, overlooking trust dynamics in diverse digital environments. This study examines news media trust and civic engagement in Egypt’s evolving digital landscape, comparing Western and national digital news consumption patterns.
