“Scenic painters, we paint wood to look like wood”. In this project I used knowledge from my time in UMW as a scenic painter to further my skills and focus on wood grain techniques. In this collection of 5 wood grain samples, I used wood graining tools and a brush separately to compare the different outcomes that were produced. Wood grain samples include pristine softwood and hardwood, aged softwood and hardwood, and wood panels in the style of trompe l'oeil.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a global health challenge, with increasing drug resistance pressing for the development of novel treatments. KasA, a key enzyme in mycobacterial fatty acid biosynthesis, is a promising drug target for TB treatment. This research focuses on the design and synthesis of potential KasA inhibitors, specifically optimizing reaction conditions to efficiently produce 1-methyl-6-aminoindazole. This molecule is an intermediate in the synthesis of drugs targeting TB. Characterization of synthesized compounds is performed using NMR, mass spectrometry, and gas chromatography to confirm structure and purity. Confabulation consists of a false memory report. Some scholars consider confabulation a clinical symptom of a neurological disorder. Others view the subject more broadly. Regardless of the boundaries of the definition, confabulation is an example of false memory. False memory reports can occur under many circumstances. The details of these circumstances, as well as the general cognitive processes that dictate memory, are important to understand, particularly to those who rely on memory for the purposes of forensic investigations. Recidivism among adult females in the United States is often an overlooked and under analyzed aspect of the justice system. Women criminals encounter unique challenges and often need distinct rehabilitative needs while incarcerated and following release. This paper explores the many factors contributing to recidivism in adult females including mental health challenges, biological, neurologic and social factors. It provides insight into how lower recidivism rates can be achieved by adapting other reform measures such as education programs.

Inner Blueprint is a trauma-informed, occupation-based intervention designed to address the complex needs of adolescent girls with histories of trauma, substance use, and mental health conditions. Grounded in occupational science, the program emphasizes the integration of brain function, sensory processing, emotional regulation, and hormonal influence to promote self-awareness, resilience, identity development, self-worth, and functional independence. The intervention incorporates manualized content delivered through interactive group activities, reflective exercises, and routine-based skill building to support gains in emotional regulation, self-concept development, and daily life performance. This capstone program aims to educate and support children with juvenile rheumatic diseases (JRDs) and their caregivers, addressing the lack of educational resources available for families. The program conducted a needs assessment, developed targeted educational content, and covered topics such as flare management, treatment options, and caregiver support. The initiative was evaluated for its effectiveness in improving caregiver knowledge, reducing stress, and enhancing the quality of life for children with JRDs.

This capstone project supported occupational therapists in addressing vision deficits associated with traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) through a web-based educational program. The program focused on assessment strategies, intervention techniques and strategies, and caregiver education. Guided by the Person-Environment-Occupation-Performance model and the Occupational Adaptation frame of reference, the project promoted occupational engagement and improved quality of life for individuals with vision deficits associated with TBIs and their caregivers by increasing clinicians’ confidence and knowledge.

Voices of Hunger WV (VoH) is committed to advancing the Right to Food (RtF) across West Virginia. RtF is: a fundamental human right that ensures everyone has access to adequate food, and to resources that allow individuals to produce, earn, or purchase sufficient nutritionally adequate and acceptable food.

Since 2020, VoH has supported the emergency of a movement for the RtF at the local, county and state in West Virginia through grassroots organizing and community empowerment. The National Right to Food (RtF) Community of Practice (CoP) is a membership-based national coalition of advocates and organizations working to advance the RtF in our cities, towns, and states. This research project sought to understand (1) how a membership based organization like the CoP grows into a social movement defined by the visions and needs of its participants, and (2) what the added value is of weaving together existing local and state efforts into a national movement. Studies find that knowledge about refugee resettlement plays a significant role in the willingness of communities to accept refugees. Knowledge about refugees and refugee resettlement plays a significant role in other factors that shape refugee acceptance such as perceived ethnic threat. Perceived ethnic threat, or the belief that an ethnic group poses a threat economically, socially, or culturally to another, contributes significantly to a host community’s willingness to accept and care for refugees. Modern commercial songs have become increasingly difficult to categorize within a singular genre. This trend, as well as my own mixed musical background, inspired me to investigate the ways in which the seemingly disparate styles of pop and jazz can be synthesized. My research focuses primarily on how this synthesis is achieved in the musical works of Norah Jones and Jamie Cullum, two of the most successful crossover artists of the early 21st century. Drawing on musical elements from each of Jones's and Cullum's catalogs, I wrote and recorded five original songs. My analysis of these songs will help to …

• Early attachment relationships are theorized to inform one’s internal “working models” of relationships that carry forward into development (Bowlby, 1973) and influence attachment tendencies into adulthood (Collins & Read, 1990; Simpson et al., 1996). • Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are strongly associated with the development of insecure attachment patterns—particularly anxious and avoidant. Individuals with higher ACE scores tend to struggle with emotional regulation and relational security, increasing their risk for attachment issues into adulthood (Kuhar et al., 2024). • When avoidant attachment develops in the context of ACEs, it often persists from childhood through adulthood, suggesting a sustained attachment …

Entropy-Guided Transformers For Sentiment Prediction, Pedro H. Batista De Moura

The use of an entropy-based loss function to improve BERT’s sentiment analysis on the Stanford Sentiment Treebank (SST-2) dataset. By studying entropy trends in a fine-tuned BERT model, we crafted a custom loss that stabilizes entropy in early layers (1–9) and penalizes entropy rises in later layers (10–12) using a mean entropy threshold. Our approach achieved 92.09% accuracy and a 92.31% F1 score, surpassing a cross-entropy baseline by 1.95%. These results highlight entropy-guided optimization’s potential for transformer models.
