This paper uniquely examines the noneconomic dimensions of a nation’s overall wellbeing by focusing on social progress and its impact on the shadow economy. The shadow economy serves an important function in a market economy bysupplying goods and services that meet the social demands of society. We argue that deficits in social development, or social regression, prompt the expansion of the shadow economy. Employing cross-country panel data for 124 countries from 1991 to 2017 and two-way fixed effects instrumental variables estimation, the results show that advancements in social progress reduce the size of the underground sector. Introduction

Rare events data have proven difficult to explain and predict. Standard statistical procedures can sharply underestimate the probability of rare events, such as intravenous immune globulin therapy (IVIg) for bullous pemphigoid.

Methods

This retrospective cross-sectional study used Department of Defense TRICARE data to determine factors associated with IVIg therapy among bullous pemphigoid patients. We used prior and weighted correction methods for logit regression to solve rare event bias.

Results

We identified 2,720 individuals diagnosed with bullous pemphigoid from 2019 to 2022, of which 14 were treated with IVIg. Patients who received IVIg therapy were younger (65.07 vs. 75.85, P …

This study explores the concept of linguistic dependency direction from Mel’čuk’s meaning-text theory, which highlights how dependency can vary in different directions, even within the same linguistic level. Focusing on the morphological level, it examines the variation of dependency direction in Arabic, particularly in areas of agreement such as semantically linked adjectives and demonstrative pronouns. The research applies Mel’čuk’s theory to analyze Arabic grammar, aiming to enhance understanding of its morphological structures. This experimental study investigates the influence of language rhythms on speakers’ perception of speech rate both in native vs. unfamiliar languages. An experiment was conducted to compare participants’ perception of speech rate in Arabic as their native language (stress-timed), to that in three other languages, each having a different rhythmic pattern: German (stress-timed), Spanish (syllable-timed), and Japanese (mora-timed). A total of 120 sentences (30 from each language) was carefully prepared and recorded for this purpose. Cole Nelson is an EMU alum who earned a degree in political Science in 2022. During his time at Eastern he worked in the Center for Jewish Studies with founding director, Marty Shichtman. Nelson worked closely with Shichtman, helping with things like event planning and updating the website. In Nicaragua and around the world, there is a stigma behind mental health and access to care for mental health especially in children. One way to improve an individual’s overall mental well-being is through exercise. Parkinson’s disease is a debilitating neurodegenerative disease of the central nervous system classified by the loss of dopaminergic neurons. Males and females exhibit different symptoms however, the cause remains unknown. Through the use of a model organism, C. elegans, we will investigate an ortholog of a Parkinsonian gene, pdr-1, to explore whether or not there are statistical differences between the hermaphrodites and males through known behavioral assays such as Swimming Induced Paralysis and Basal Slowing Rate. Understanding the impacts of glacier change on riverine ecosystems is limited by a lack of multi-year studies in glacierized mountain catchments quantifying the magnitude and stoichiometry of riverine biogeochemical yields. Here we evaluate riverine concentration-discharge relationships using the power function between daily runoff and element yields and stoichiometry across 10 catchments of varying glacial coverage within two climatically distinct regions in the Gulf of Alaska. Our multi-year study showed that biogeochemical stoichiometry and concentration-discharge relationships for dissolved carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus varied significantly with catchment glacier coverage across both regions. The hospitality industry’s global reach and resource-intensive operations have placed it under growing scrutiny for environmental impact. This empirical study examines how corporate governance influences corporate environmental citizenship (CEC) among eight major hotel companies across North America, Europe, and Asia from 2020 to 2023. Drawing on agency, stakeholder, institutional, and legitimacy theories, the study hypothesizes that stronger governance—measured by board independence, separation of CEO and Chair roles (non-duality), and ownership concentration—positively relates to environmental performance. The global rise of type 2 diabetes, particularly in Asian populations, has led to widespread adoption of sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors for glycemic control. While effective, these agents elevate the risk of urinary tract infections (UTIs) by inducing glycosuria, which creates a nutrient-rich environment that favors uropathogen growth. Asian individuals may be disproportionately vulnerable to SGLT2 inhibitor–associated UTIs due to a confluence of factors, including lower body mass index, increased visceral adiposity, congenital urinary tract anomalies, and genetic polymorphisms that impair uroepithelial integrity and immunity. Introduction: Pseudocholinesterase (PChE), also known as butyrylcholinesterase, plasma cholinesterase or serum cholinesterase, is an enzyme produced in the liver and is responsible for the hydrolysis of choline-based esters, namely the neuromuscular blockade (NMB) drugs succinylcholine and mivacurium. In the presence of normal PChE levels, 90-95% of succinylcholine is inactivated before it reaches the neuromuscular junction (NMJ), resulting in paralysis expected to last about 10-15 minutes [1,2]. PChE deficiencies are exceedingly rare, affecting 0.02-0.03% of the population, and can prolong paralysis by minutes to hours [1]. This literature review evaluates the lack of paid parental leave policy in the United States through the lens of attachment theory. While attachment theory has been extensively studied in the fields of Psychology and Social Work, a lack of research has been conducted to connect this theory to parental leave policy. The literature review examines parental leave policy and attachment theory along with how these topics connect. Social work is a profession that values the importance of human relationships and social justice, so understanding this relationship is important in forming the disciplinary knowledge upon which evidence-based advocacy is built.

This study analyzes Robinson Crusoe (1719) through an ecocritical lens, focusing on its depiction of Crusoe’s anthropocentric mindset that thrives due to his disregard for environmental justice. Drawing on Lawrence Buell’s “environmental imagination” and John Locke’s theory of property, the study examines how Crusoe’s survival tactics exploit the environment, prioritizing his own needs while neglecting the ecological principles of environmental sustainability and biodiversity. A Path Out: Using Video Games To Reduce Prejudice Towards Refugees, Liam Cross, Gray Atherton, Chris Stiff

Historically, research on video games has centred on their potentially adverse effects, though more recently, work has started to explore the benefits. Here, we investigate whether playing a video game portraying a refugee’s plight in escaping war-torn Syria could affect implicit and explicit attitudes towards that social group. We show that after 30 min of game play embodying a Syrian refugee, participants showed reduced prejudicial attitudes and increased empathy towards Syrian refugees compared to those playing a mechanically similar but contextually unrelated game. While implicit attitudes followed the same direction, this difference was not statistically significant. Potential theoretical underpinnings of …
