BACKGROUND: Adult spinal deformity (ASD) is a prevalent condition estimated at 38%. Symptomatic ASD is associated with substantial health care costs. The role of nonoperative interventions in the management of ASD remains elusive. The National Scoliosis Clinic's (NSC) scoliosis realignment therapy (SRT) is a personalized digital health exercise program for the nonoperative management of ASD.

OBJECTIVE: This exploratory study had two objectives: (1) to evaluate the effect of the SRT program on users' intention of having spinal fusion; and (2) from a US payer perspective, to estimate the annual cost savings per 100,000 beneficiaries by averting spinal surgery.

Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) airplanes provide a great degree of flexibility in mission type, as they combine the landing ability of a helicopter with the range of an airplane. This paper describes the design, implementation, and testing of the control system for just such a vehicle. Due to its non-typical motor configuration, there is an unbalanced torque on the frame. Two control methods are suggested and tested to balance this torque, and a PID controller with a high I gain is selected. Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 (DM1) is caused by CTG-repeat expansion in the DMPK gene, leading to skeletal muscle weakening and wasting. Irisin, a muscle-secreted cytokine released during exercise, promotes muscle growth, repair, and metabolism. Given irisin’s role in promoting muscle growth, we explored how activity-induced Idit expression impacts muscle function in a Drosophila model of DM1. Healthy control (CUG20) and DM1 (CUG250) flies were generated using the UAS-Gal4 system. CUG20 and CUG250 flies underwent a three-week exercise regimen, with the goal of increasing levels of Iditarod protein, the fruit fly homolog of irisin. This study aimed to understand the role of national identity in enhancing the nation's capabilities and its impact on Omani society. It employed a quantitative methodology and utilised a questionnaire as the primary tool for data collection. A random sample of 359 participants was selected. The study's findings revealed that Omani national identity plays a pivotal role in fostering national belonging and protecting the nation's assets, emphasising the importance of preserving traditional values and customs. Section 287(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, first implemented in 1996, authorizes local and state law enforcement agencies to enter into formal agreements with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (“ICE”).  These agreements, known as Memoranda of Agreements (“MOAs”), deputize selected officers to perform certain federal immigration enforcement functions.  There are two enforcement models: the jail enforcement model, in which officers identify individuals for ICE after an arrest, and the more controversial task force model, which allows officers to initiate immigration enforcement in the field—during traffic stops, patrols, or other community interactions. Research indicates that human-caused mortality (HCM) is a key factor limiting numerous large carnivore populations. However, efforts to represent HCM in spatially explicit models have generally been limited in scope-often relying on proxies, such as road or human density. Yet such efforts fail to distinguish different sources of HCM, which can arise from different antecedent processes. We offer a systems-based conceptual framework for understanding the antecedents of HCMs that is grounded in theory from the social and behavioral sciences. Specifically, we first explain how HCMs are usefully distinguished into four types (e.g., accidental, harvest, illicit, control actions), then discuss how …

Domestic minor sex trafficking leaves survivors with long lasting physical and mental health needs. Due to its insidious nature, sex trafficking is often invisible. Consequently the needs of survivors, who have experienced complex trauma, are little understood. The outcome of complex trauma is trauma-related shame. Understanding the impact of shame specifically on trafficking survivors' identity formation, interpersonal relathionships, perception of self, and overall ability to heal are necessary to understand. Microbial communities in sand play essential roles in their ecosystems, yet little is known about how bacterial diversity and function vary across different sand depths. This study investigated bacterial microbiomes at varying depths (0, 10, 20, 30, and 40 cm) on Biloxi East Beach, on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, using 16S rRNA gene sequencing and assays of extracellular enzyme activity. 11,161 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) were identified across all samples, with the most abundant bacterial phyla being Planctomycetota, Gammaproteobacteria, and Bacteroidota. Depth had a significant impact on bacterial community composition, with surface layers having more diverse bacterial communities. Microbial diversity …

In this essay, we introduce media quiteracy, which we use to conceptualize and describe the valuable learning that can happen through the refusal to take up new media or the act of pausing or ceasing its use. We see media quiteracy as an active and generative approach to learning and argue for its inclusion in the media literacy curriculum. We trace the history of critical engagement with technologies within education and then articulate what media quiteracy can look like in practice. Background: Vision rehabilitation following a successful keratoplasty remains difficult. Occasionally, Post Keratoplasty Refractive Error cannot be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. In such situations, refractive surgery may be the answer. It has been demonstrated that Femto-LASIK is a safe and effective procedure for reducing postoperative refractive error in keratoplasty patients. Utility And Safety Of Romiplostim As An Alternative To Platelet Transfusion For Neonates, Rachel N. Zeno, Sara Awad, Harry Lesmana

Thrombocytopenia is a common challenge in the neonatal intensive care unit, traditionally managed with platelet transfusions. However, transfusions are associated with significant risks, including increased mortality and neurodevelopmental impairment. This case series highlights the use of romiplostim, a thrombopoietin receptor agonist, in three neonates with thrombocytopenia. Each case demonstrated notable improvements in platelet counts without adverse events, reducing dependency on transfusions. These findings underscore romiplostim's potential as a safer alternative for managing neonatal thrombocytopenia. This report advocates for further research to explore romiplostim's efficacy and safety in this vulnerable population, emphasizing its promise in improving neonatal outcomes.
