Top-Down Control And Bottom-Up Salience Guide Attention During Visual Search, Christopher Ahn
Top-Down Control And Bottom-Up Salience Guide Attention During Visual Search, Christopher Ahn
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
We search the visual world using different strategies, some of them relying on bottom-up salience, others on top-down expectations. However, little is known about how we arbitrate between them. Here, we report a study investigating whether people are sensitive to environmental regularities that incentivize different strategies with differential effort requirements. To test this, we used a visual search task in which people need to search a target in a field of items, each of which is printed in one of two colors. This task allows us to parametrically manipulate bottom-up salience by varying the number of items with the less …

Introduction: TLR9 agonists are immunomodulators that have been of interest for combined use with cancer immunotherapy. TLR9 agonists, such as lefitolimod (MGN1703), significantly increased Th1 response in preclinical models and have demonstrated efficacy in early clinical trials. This trial assessed the safety and preliminary efficacy of the combination of lefitolimod and ipilimumab in patients with advanced solid tumors.
Methods: This was a single-center, open-label, investigator-initiated phase I trial conducted at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. Patients received leftolimod either subcutaneously (at escalating doses of 15-120 mg) or intratumorally (at the maximum feasible dose) in combination with ipilimumab …

Colorectal peritoneal metastases (CPM) are the third most common site of metastatic spread of colorectal cancer and are associated with worse survival than other sites of metastatic disease. In recent years tumoral circulating tumoral DNA (ctDNA) mutational status has been increasingly utilized in clinical decision making for metastatic colorectal cancer patients despite its utility in CPM being poorly understood. Here we describe standard of care performed mutational profiles and associated outcomes for unresectable CPM patients, with a contextual comparison to 160 unresected colorectal liver metastases (CLM) patients. Of 508 patients, 288 (57 %) had CPM alone and 220 (43 %) …

Maintaining protein homeostasis is essential for cellular health. Our previous research uncovered a cross-compartmental Mitochondrial to Cytosolic Stress Response, activated by the perturbation of mitochondrial proteostasis, which ultimately results in the improvement of proteostasis in the cytosol. Here, we found that this signaling axis also influences the unfolded protein response of the endoplasmic reticulum (UPRER), suggesting the presence of a Mitochondria to ER Stress Response (MERSR). During MERSR, the IRE1 branch of UPRER is inhibited, introducing a previously unknown regulatory component of MCSR. Moreover, proteostasis is enhanced through the upregulation of the PERK-eIF2α signaling pathway, increasing phosphorylation of eIF2α and …

Reliability Of Longitudinal Sleep Monitoring In Amyloid-Negative And Amyloid-Positive Older Adults., Taylor Pedersen
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Sleep disturbances are associated with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) pathology and cognitive symptoms, but longitudinal studies exploring sleep, AD biomarkers, and cognition are limited. Understanding changes in sleep among older adults with and without AD pathology is crucial for appropriately designing longitudinal studies of aging and AD. To assess this, sleep was longitudinally assessed (over ~3.5 years) in amyloid-negative and amyloid-positive older adults using self-reported logs, questionnaires, and at-home monitoring with a single-channel electroencephalography (EEG) device. Amyloid imaging and cognitive assessments were also performed. Test-retest reliability was evaluated using intraclass correlation coefficients, and power analysis determined sample sizes for longitudinal observational …

As the reach of space exploration extends further from Earth, the cost, time, and energy requirements necessary for life support of crewed expeditions exponentially increases. This makes the reclamation of resources paramount to the viability of such missions and will eventually become a major constraint for future destinations due to the expensive delivery of materials. Thusly, Supercritical Water Oxidation (SCWO) has been proposed to meet the requirements for the recovery of potable water needed for the drinking, hygiene, laundry, and irrigation performed by astronauts. This technique utilizes supercritical water’s properties above 374°C and 22.1 MPa alongside oxidants to convert organic …

Since 2020, when mass protests against racism swept across the United States, scholars, lawyers, and the general public have become increasingly aware that racism permeates society and the criminal legal system, from overt racial animus to the nuanced effects of structural racism. Demonstrating the influence of racism is therefore vital to the practice of criminal defense, yet many attorneys do not know how to prove racism in court. We surveyed over seven hundred criminal-defense attorneys across the United States, and nearly half had never heard of expert witnesses testifying or submitting written reports on racism—what we call “antiracist expert evidence.” …

Computation-Driven Design And Synthesis Of Molecular Sensors For Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy In Liquids, Junhu Zhou
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
The reliable detection of molecules in liquid environments is a continuing challenge in chemical sensing and biological diagnostics. While surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is well-recognized for its high sensitivity and molecular specificity, conventional platforms – based on colloidal nanoparticles or patterned substrates – have shortcomings. These conventional configurations struggle with signal reproducibility, non-uniform hotspot distribution, and, critically, restricted accessibility for large targets such as proteins and exosomes.
This thesis develops a computation-guided approach to developing next-generation SERS sensors capable of overcoming these persistent obstacles. At the heart of the study is the design and fabrication of metal-insulator-metal (MIM) nanoparticles, where …
Hybrid Dc-Dc Converters For Soft Charging Capacitive Actuators: Modeling, Analysis And Design, Bahlakoana Mabetha
Hybrid Dc-Dc Converters For Soft Charging Capacitive Actuators: Modeling, Analysis And Design, Bahlakoana Mabetha
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Recent trends in haptics, microrobotics and ultrasound technology have shown an increasing use of piezoelectric and other electrostatic actuators. These actuators are suited for miniaturized applications due to their high power density and favorable scalability at a small size. Their electrical impedance at lower frequency (their typical operating range) is capacitive, therefore, they can be modeled as capacitive loads.
The driving circuits for capacitive actuators need to deliver and recover (bidirectional) dominantly reactive power, unlike typical power electronics converters for resistive loads which deliver (unidirectional) real power to the load. Therefore, the circuits, operation, and optimization required to drive these …

Mixing-Controlled Compression Ignition Of Ethanol Using Exhaust Rebreathe At A Low-Load Operating Condition—Single Cylinder Experiments In A Heavy-Duty Diesel Engine, Tyler Johnston, Jared Zeman, Adam Dempsey
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications
As pollutant emissions regulations in the heavy-duty sector become further stringent, the energy requirements in this sector continue to increase. Due to the high-power density and operating period requirements within this sector, full electrification is challenging. A viable solution to meet the stringent requirements for criteria pollutant and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is the use of low carbon renewable fuels. Low carbon renewable fuels are desirable due to their lower carbon content per unit energy compared to conventional fossil diesel fuel. However, implementing some low carbon renewable fuels in the heavy-duty sector poses challenges due to their low reactivity and …

We document the first reported use of the Amplatzer Vascular Plug 4 for anterior mitral leaflet perforation repair in a 56-year-old male who had undergone valve-in-valve transcatheter aortic valve replacement. Previously reported cases involving the use of other occluder devices for mitral leaflet perforation repair either required guide catheter or delivery sheath exchanges, arteriovenous wire loop for deployment, or use of mitral transcatheter edge-to-edge repair for leaflet stability. Our case highlights the efficacy of the bilobar-designed Amplatzer Vascular Plug 4 for precise occlusion in anterior mitral leaflet perforation through antegrade-only delivery and safety through the simplification of procedural steps.
