It traces Chesebro's transformation from a Harvard-educated lawyer with Democratic ties to a key architect of Donald Trump's post-election strategy to derail the transfer of power to Joseph Biden. After the first Trump administration, there were multiple coordinated efforts to discipline lawyers in highly charged political cases. For example, a California bar court recommended that John Eastman be disbarred. Eastman helped craft the legal argument that then-Vice President Mike Pence had the right to delay or decline to certify the election results, and the disciplinary case concluded that he lied publicly, in his memos to his client and Pence, and to courts. Formerly incarcerated persons face disproportionately challenging barriers to housing upon reentry; criminal records are used as a basis to deny otherwise suitable prospective tenants. In 2017, the City of Seattle passed the "Fair Chance Housing Ordinance," prohibiting landlords from relying on criminal history when evaluating prospective tenants. In 2023, the Ninth Circuit struck this provision down on the grounds that this complete ban violated Seattle landlords' constitutionally protected free speech rights. The circuit court held that the ordinance implicated commercial speech and failed to pass intermediate scrutiny review under the four-part test outlined in Central Hudson Gas & Electric Corp. …

The United Statesis the only industrialized nation lacking a universal paid sick leave law that guarantees employees the right to time off from work to attend to their own or their family's medical needs. Nonetheless, many states and municipalities have created their own paid sickleave laws to fillin the gap left open by the federal government. Following the passage of three state referendums on paid sick leave laws in the 2024 general election, there are now eighteen states, plus the District of Columbia, which mandate that employers provide employees with paid sick leave. Emergent Models Of Place-Based Philanthropy: A Review Of Six Foundations’ Initiatives, Douglas Easterling

Traditional approaches to place-based philanthropy, including comprehensive community initiatives (CCIs), are characterized by four design features: 1) a centralized stakeholder group that serves as the primary nexus for the foundation’s engagement; 2) an extensive planning process on the front end; 3) the planning group’s initial strategy serves as the basis for the foundation’s investments throughout the initiative; and 4) foundation staff play a largely transactional role in reviewing proposals, awarding grants and monitoring progress. This linear, structured approach to community change has had only limited success over 30 years of foundation practice.

This study presents an implementation of state estimation for a drag-based rendezvous mission involving multiple chaser spacecraft and a single target, using Unscented Kalman Filtering (UKF) with Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements. The implemented method combines GPS navigation solutions with UKF to provide real- time state estimates of all spacecraft involved. Nonlinear least squares method is employed to process pseudorange and pseudorange rate measurements to determine receiver states, UKF utilizes these states as measurements to estimate absolute space- craft positions and velocities. This implementation also addresses practical challenges including raw GPS measurement processing, and varying GPS satellite geometries.

Well-trained volunteers are required to help meet the daily needs of dogs waiting to be adopted in animal shelters and to find new homes for them. Inadequate volunteer training leads to mismanagement and attrition of volunteers who are essential to helping shelter dogs get adopted. However, animal shelters often lack access to the resources and funds required to provide adequate training for volunteers. Although their role is sometimes overlooked, an Indiana statewide study confirms that most community foundations and United Way agencies directly contribute to meeting local disaster response needs.

Although half of all community foundations and United Ways report past service disruptions due to the more severe weather caused by climate change, the majority have not discussed the need to plan for disasters with their boards of directors to assure business continuity.

Community foundations lag behind United Ways and direct service nonprofits in risk mitigation, and their leaders are more likely to downplay the potential impacts of climate change on state residents. …

Traditional philanthropy has largely been top-down, with communities — including youth — having limited decision-making power. Despite philanthropy’s recent shift toward participatory approaches, young people in these historically excluded communities are often ignored as contributors to philanthropic strategy.

Youth-Possible Philanthropy™ (YPP) offers a new, emerging theoretical framework that proposes to shift this dynamic by positioning youth as co-creators and possibility catalysts in philanthropic governance and strategy. YPP is grounded in possibility development, participatory approaches, and trust-based philanthropy.

The article provides strategies for operationalizing YPP. Case examples illustrate how YPP can foster authentic power-sharing and bridge gaps in philanthropic practice.

Artificial Intelligence is undermining the cultural and constitutional values of human creativity; it is also threatening the livelihoods of the creative working class. Because neither Congress nor regulators can keep pace with AI’s pace of change, class actions have stepped into the breach. In the first wave of such litigation, authors and artists in courts on both coasts claim that AI companies violate intellectual property law when they “train” their systems on copyrighted works.

The Effects Of The Expanded Pandemic Unemployment Assistance On Non-Standard Workers' Financial And Mental Wellbeing, Juhyun Bae

During COVID-19, for the first time in U.S. history, Unemployment Insurance (UI) benefits were extended to non-standard workers who are not typically eligible for that. Given the exclusion from the social security system, this offers an important opportunity to investigate such benefits on their economic and emotional security. To estimate it, I analyze staggered difference-in-differences and triple difference models using the Household Pulse Survey. I found that the early termination of the expanded pandemic UI program led to increases in financial and mental difficulties among residents, especially non-standard workers with more difficulty in paying expenses and depression. Public transportation can lead to increases in physical activity, access to jobs, healthcare, and healthy food, and may improve overall health. Funding for public transit is essential for a sustainable transportation system. However, most health studies have not focused on voting behavior as a mechanism for sustaining public transportation. This study employs a cross-sectional, in-person, exit poll of voters at 10 randomly selected polling locations during a local election in 2023 in Kansas City, Missouri. The voter ballot included a question to extend an existing 3/8 cent sales tax for public transportation. Participants (N = 649) overwhelmingly supported (90.6 %) …

We prove a generalized version of Evans and Griffith’s improved new intersection theorem: Let I be an ideal in a local ring R. If a finite free R-complex, concentrated in nonnegative degrees, has I-torsion homology in positive degrees, and the homology in degree 0 has an I-torsion minimal generator, then the length of the complex is at least dimR−dimR/I. This improves the bound htI obtained by Avramov, Iyengar, and Neeman in 2018.

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is a rare hyperinflammatory condition resulting in erroneous activation of the immune system. Treatment is directed at the underlying pathology that prompts activation of the immune system and usually includes immunosuppressant therapy, including steroids, etoposide, or rituximab. However, the best treatment for patients with significant infection remains unclear. Few cases of HLH are associated with disseminated histoplasmosis, and there are no clear treatment guidelines in these cases. Due to the significant morbidity and mortality associated with HLH, further investigation is needed to identify the best treatment regimens.

Micro-grids function to connect to power system power produced by the renewable energy resources. In islanded micro-grids, grid-forming units collaborate to maintain the micro-grids voltage and frequency by utilizing droop control technique that includes primary, secondary and tertiary levels. Secondary control intervenes to improve power sharing and restore voltage and frequency to their nominal levels. However, the conventional droop control applied to a grid with mismatched line parameters experiences a trade-off between reactive power sharing and voltage regulations. Congressionally imposed ethics enforcement would enhance the Supreme Court's exercise of constitutional powers by reducing the interference of improper personal motives during its factual and legal determinations. The Court has long recognized the self-evident truth that "no man can be a judge in his own case." The Framers recognized the limits inherent in human nature: humans are not angels. KGaA ("Bertelsmann"), the parent company of PRH, announced its plan to acquire S&S from its parent company, Paramount Global ("Paramount'). This announcement positioned the merged entity ("S&S + PRH") to control a third of the book market, the largest market share held by a publishing house. A liquid crystal (LC)-based sensing platform for the rapid optical detection of SARS-CoV-2 ' s spike protein's receptor binding domain (RBD) domain is introduced. This platform utilizes a thermotropic LC, hosted on metal-cation decorated substrates, onto which the spike protein can competitively bind. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations guide the experiments that reveal a homeotropic-to-planar transition in the LCs upon exposure to SARS-CoV-2 spike-decorated yeast, providing a basis for sensitive virus detection. The sensor's reversibility/specificity is confirmed through antibody-induced orientation recovery of the LCs initial orientation. Stomoxys flies are widely distributed and economically significant vectors of various livestock pathogens of veterinary importance. However, the role of Stomoxys spp. in pathogen transmission is poorly understood. Therefore, we studied the feeding patterns of these blood feeders collected from specific locations in Kenya to identify various vertebrate hosts they fed on, the livestock hemopathogens they carried, and to elucidate their role in pathogens transmission. Our findings show that field-collected Stomoxys flies carried several pathogens, including Trypanosoma spp., Anaplasma spp., and Theileria spp., which were also detected in the blood of sampled livestock, namely camels and cattle.
