Here we present the case of a 33-year-old male who presented to the emergency department (ED) with a complaint of severe muscle spasms of a ten-hour duration. He noted that he took a supplement which he purchased over the internet called Epimedium, also known as Horny Goat Weed, for the purpose of improving his mood and sense of energy and reducing his sense of anxiety. He noted that he started this supplement one month prior to ED presentation, coincident with the first episodes of muscle cramps. In the ED, he had elevations of his CK and creatinine and required hospital …

A 57-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), obstructive sleep apnea, and a recent pulmonary embolism (PE) on anticoagulation presented with acute pleuritic chest pain and worsening dyspnea. Computed tomographic angiography (CTA) of the chest revealed a small distal segmental PE in the left lower lobe and an adjacent irregular consolidation, raising concern for pulmonary infarction versus pneumonia. The patient was empirically started on antibiotics for possible pneumonia and admitted for anticoagulation and supportive care. He left the hospital against medical advice (AMA) before completing treatment, but returned days later with exacerbated symptoms. This case highlights the diagnostic challenge …

Inclusion body Myositis (IBM) stands as a rare and complex neuromuscular disorder (NMD) characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy. Among its cardinal symptoms are dysphagia and respiratory distress, which are the most common cause of death in this disease. While the differential diagnosis of respiratory distress is vast and includes aspiration, pneumonia, acute coronary syndrome, emphysema, and congestive heart failure, a clinician should recognize that respiratory distress can also be secondary to dysphagia in NMDs like IBM and can quickly become life threating. IgA Nephropathy, also known as Berger disease, can precipitate acute renal failure in patients. IgA Nephropathy (IgAN) is deposition of protein from IgA into the renal tissue with subsequent renal dysfunction. IgA vasculitis (IgAV) is another condition where similarly the protein of IgA is deposited into the vessels. There are some cases of co-existing atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) with IgAN. However, rare combinations seen with all three IgAN, IgAV, and aHUS without any pre-existing conditions nor medical history. Tricyclic antidepressant (TCA) overdose is an uncommon complication that results from excessive administration of TCAs. Signs and symptoms include bradycardia, fever, dry mouth, and altered mental status. Patients can develop cardiac arrhythmia and diffuse alveolar hemorrhage, which can be fatal. This case report details a 65-year-old female who experienced a suspected TCA overdose as a suicide attempt. She had a history of depression and a previous suicide attempt. The patient was unresponsive with declining oxygen saturation, necessitating emergent intubation. Important lab findings included a decreased partial pressure of oxygen to fraction of inspired oxygen ratio (P/F ratio) and prolonged QRS …

Presenting as a case to the emergency department was a 53-year-old male with a complaint of diffuse abdominal pain and focal right flank pain at site of recent percutaneous abscess drain site performed exactly one month prior. This followed hospitalization in the preceding year for complicated multifocal intra-abdominal infections requiring surgical interventions including exploratory laparotomy and surgical debridement for intra-abdominal abscess and scrotal abscess formation. This dissertation investigates how artificial intelligence (AI) can be designed to improve the collective emotion within a team. A team's collective emotion, or morale, describes how motivated, optimistic, and enthusiastic the group is in accomplishing its goals. We conducted four studies that compared different social support strategies that AI teammates can provide to the team. Study 1A found that AI teammates who communicate with emotions can better motivate human team members and promote awareness of team dynamics and environmental changes. Evaluating the constitutionality of modern firearm regulations under the Second Amendment requires recourse to historical evidence under Bruen v. New York State Rifle and Pistol Association. Generally, the government bears the burden to demonstrate that modern firearm regulations are consistent with the nation’s historical traditions. But the Supreme Court’s earlier opinion in District of Columbia v. Heller stated that certain categories of firearm restrictions are longstanding and thus presumptively lawful. And yet, litigants are inviting courts to reject this presumption, arguing that presumptively lawful regulations should be subject to the same historical test as presumptively unlawful regulations.

The Supreme Court’s 2024 decision in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, rejecting “Chevron deference” to administrative agency interpretations of their organic statutes, has caused great uncertainty about the fate of federal regulation. This Essay considers that question in the context of federal gun regulation. Using examples of regulatory actions taken by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, it illustrates the wide range of functions reflected in agency actions—in particular, how those actions can span the spectrum from pure statutory interpretation to pure policymaking, with hybrid way stations between those two extremes.

Abraham Cruzvillegas’ Autoconstrucción project is the sculptural manifestation of an approach to artmaking rooted in the self-built and continually evolving forms of the neighborhood where Cruzvillegas grew up (Colonia Ajusco near Mexico City). While it might seem surprising to draw a comparison between the forms of Autoconstrucción and Disability Studies, and while Cruzvillegas does not literally depict the disabled human form, Autoconstrucción resonates deeply with this critical space. This thesis investigates the Ark of the Covenant as a paradoxical visual and theological artifact within early Israelite religious art. While the Israelite tradition has long been characterized as aniconic (eschewing anthropomorphic representations of the divine) the Ark occupied a central role in ritual, worship, and religious identity. Prior scholarship has focused either on the Ark’s narrative function in biblical texts or its formal attributes as a cultic object. This thesis examines the religious iconography in three key paintings by the Pre-Raphaelite artist Evelyn De Morgan, The Angel of Death, The Undiscovered Country, and Lux in Tenebris, and explores how they draw on Early Italian Renaissance visual traditions to depict themes of death and the soul’s transcendence. Recent scholarship has assessed De Morgan’s oeuvre through the feminist lens and emphasized her engagement with Spiritualism and the nineteenth-century revival of Swedenborgian philosophy. The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether or not there are any identifiable properties or characteristics in the measurements of the atmospheric electrical potential gradient prior to California earthquakes that could qualify as a precursor signal. Scientists from around the world have reported anomalous behavior in the potential gradient before earthquakes for more than 130 years. The only two previous reports on this subject involving California earthquakes and the potential gradient were inconclusive and based upon limited data. Artificial Intelligence (AI) has revolutionized multimedia content creation, enhancing efficiency and personalization. However, this rapid evolution has raised concerns about originality and ethical responsibility. This study explored college students’ perceptions of AI in content creation and its implications. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combined surveys and qualitative insights to analyze how students engaged with AI tools. Findings revealed that while AI streamlined workflows, improved content quality, and boosted audience engagement, concerns about authenticity, intellectual property, and the diminishing role of human creativity persisted.
