The Influence Of Complex Terrain On The Turin, New York Tornado Of 2023, Alex D. Kramer May 2025

The Influence Of Complex Terrain On The Turin, New York Tornado Of 2023, Alex D. Kramer

Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences Honors Program

Although uncommon as compared to other regions of the United States, the Northeast does experience significant tornados; those rated F/EF3 and above, of which some have had profound impacts on the region. Due to the diverse topography of the region, including its many northsouth oriented river valleys, most of these significant tornados traversed considerable changes in elevation throughout their lifetime. This study seeks to better understand the impacts of local topography on the intensity and overall progression of a significant tornadic event through using the most recent Northeast EF3: the Turin, NY tornado. With the consideration of previous studies involving …

The Monsters Are Due On Hillside Avenue: Paul Robeson And The Racialization Of The Peekskill Riots Of 1949, Joshua Dellacruz May 2025

The Monsters Are Due On Hillside Avenue: Paul Robeson And The Racialization Of The Peekskill Riots Of 1949, Joshua Dellacruz

History Honors Program

On August 27, 1949, a burning cross pierced the night sky in the quiet hills of Westchester County. As Howard Fast later recounted in Peekskill USA: There was a moment of silent cessation, and one of the men leaped up on the truck and cried, 'A cross is burning!' We could only see the glare, but the symbolic meaning was not lost upon us. In the sweet land the movement had been rounded out; the burning cross, the symbol of all that is rotten and evil in our land had blessed us. Our night was complete and we could do …

Women In The Environmental Movement: An Examination Of Maternalistic Rhetoric And Its Relationship To Modern Environmentalism In The 20th Century, Danielle Howie May 2025

Women In The Environmental Movement: An Examination Of Maternalistic Rhetoric And Its Relationship To Modern Environmentalism In The 20th Century, Danielle Howie

History Honors Program

From 1942 to 1953, the Hooker Chemical Company decided that an abandoned canal in Niagara Falls was the perfect place to dump 22,000 tons of toxic chemical waste, a common disposal practice that was largely unregulated by the local government. The company covered the 16 acres of hazardous waste with clay and sold it to the Niagara Falls Board of Education in 1953 for one dollar. With a warning included in the property deed that mentioned the presence of chemical waste, the company was excluded from all future liability.2 In the decades to follow, a suburban community would flower around …

Iran-Contra And The Memory Of Vietnam: Human Rights, Covert Operations, And The National Security Council, Matthew Sarcinella May 2025

Iran-Contra And The Memory Of Vietnam: Human Rights, Covert Operations, And The National Security Council, Matthew Sarcinella

History Honors Program

In December of 1972, President Richard Nixon ordered the bombing of North Vietnam, beginning on December 18th and lasting until the 30th. During this period 20,000 tons of bombs were dropped, resulting in the deaths of thousands of Vietnamese. The bombings would soon be known as the “12 Days of Christmas.” Major General Richard Secord, “master of covert operations” sat back and watched as North Vietnam was nearly destroyed. There was nothing that Vietnam could do to combat the U.S. military. Being in Secord’s position, he understood better than anyone that this was far more than a mere phenomenon. For …

Gaussian Process Regression And Nested Sampling For Planetary Parameter Prediction, Alexandro Balarezo May 2025

Gaussian Process Regression And Nested Sampling For Planetary Parameter Prediction, Alexandro Balarezo

Physics

In this project, we implemented a Gaussian Process (GP) regression framework using MATLAB to model two planetary (Earth) parameters, the surface temperature and albedo, as functions of planetary rotation rate and insolation (the amount of sunlight impinging on the planet). We used simulation data from the NASA ROCKE-3D general circulation model developed by the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS). The GP model generates a joint multivariate Gaussian distribution that is entirely captured by a covariance matrix and the output of a training data set. The covariance matrix is determined by the input data and the three hyperparameters a …

Using Wearable Sensors For Gait Analysis: Measurement Accuracy For Linear Measurements, Chaenaya Underwood May 2025

Using Wearable Sensors For Gait Analysis: Measurement Accuracy For Linear Measurements, Chaenaya Underwood

English

The emergence of “new media” has fundamentally reshaped human interaction, relying on algorithm-driven content saturation to shape user experiences and reinforce cognitive biases. While digital platforms offer unprecedented access to information and global connectivity, they also contribute to emotional disengagement, increased anxiety, and diminished critical thinking. “New media” often isolates individuals, encouraging passive consumption and emotional dysregulation. However, the challenge lies not in technological advancements but in society’s lack of critical engagement and effective regulation. This paper examines the misuse of new technology and its negative implications on human behavior. Incorporating evidence from journal articles, books, and personal correspondence, this …

The First Amendment On Trial: Hate Speech, Free Speech And College Campuses, Maya Rotman May 2025

The First Amendment On Trial: Hate Speech, Free Speech And College Campuses, Maya Rotman

English

This thesis examines the tension between the First Amendment’s guarantee of free speech and the harmful impact of hate speech on college campuses. As incidents of targeted, discriminatory rhetoric rise in academic settings, the need to reevaluate what constitutes protected speech has become increasingly urgent. Through legal analysis, including case law such as Brandenburg v. Ohio and Schenck v. United States, this paper argues that the Supreme Court must distinguish between constitutionally protected speech and harmful hate speech. The thesis uses contemporary case studies from college campuses across the country. It includes firsthand accounts from the University at Albany …

The Modern Gothic: Examining Humanity’S Relationship With Technology In Black Mirror’S Be Right Back, Ana Radojevic

English

The Gothic genre, since its beginning, has been a reflection to society's fears and anxieties towards cultural and technological shifts. This thesis critically examines how Netflix's "Black Mirror" episode "Be Right Back" continues the Gothic tradition by reflecting contemporary fears of humanity's complex relationship with technology. Through an analysis of the traditional Gothic elements: haunting and death, the supernatural, and the uncanny-- "Black Mirror" is placed in the Gothic genre identifying fears of artificial intelligence and human identity. The episode's portrayal of an AI surrogate for a dead boyfriend, the episode is a cautionary tale about the limitations of technology …

Dwelling At The Gates Of Difference: The Intersection Of Beowulf, American Politics, And Monsters, Emma Rennard May 2025

Dwelling At The Gates Of Difference: The Intersection Of Beowulf, American Politics, And Monsters, Emma Rennard

English

Many political scientists, legal scholars, and American citizens have found themselves dedicating a great deal of time to asking why American politics has become so largely polarized over the last 10 years. We are seeing more than ever political acts of violence, families and friendships dissolved over political disagreements. We are witnessing the liquidation of civility in American politics, with a staple of current political debates being personal insults and aggression. Attitudes towards women have become more hostile and negative, attitudes towards transgender Americans have become more disparaging and dangerous. These political opponents become scapegoats and are dehumanized and politically …

The research conducted consists of a mixed-methods approach, combining an online survey administered through Qualtrics to 50 survey respondents and a case study, which included individually interviewing 3 UX professionals over Zoom, to gather data and personal insights. The results show that while AI has the power and potential to make some parts of UX work faster, like research analysis, prototyping, and automating redundant tasks, …

Perceptions Of Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, Haley Bowman May 2025

Perceptions Of Ketamine-Assisted Psychotherapy, Haley Bowman

Psychology

This research project tests how educational materials influence individuals’ perceptions of ketamine-assisted psychotherapy (KAP). Previous literature indicates that educational materials shape perceptions of credibility. The hypothesis predicts that education will enhance positive perceptions.

This study recruited participants from Sona Systems and Prolific, with 924 individuals completing the study. The questionnaire gathered demographic information, assessed drug use history, and measured participants’ beliefs about the causes of depression. Participants then evaluated treatment credibility by responding to open-ended questions, the Treatment Adherence/Acceptability Scale (TAAS), the Credibility/Expectancy Questionnaire (CEQ), and the KAP credibility questionnaire.

The results indicate that education does not consistently improve perceptions …

Emotional Intelligence And College-Aged Couples’ Relationship Satisfaction, Leeza Milman May 2025

Emotional Intelligence And College-Aged Couples’ Relationship Satisfaction, Leeza Milman

Psychology

This study examined the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and romantic relationship satisfaction (RAS) among college-aged individuals. Drawing on established models of EI and prior research linking EI to interpersonal functioning, the study tested three hypotheses: (1) higher EI would be positively associated with greater relationship satisfaction, (2) individuals in female same-sex relationships would report higher satisfaction than those in heterosexual relationships, and (3) EI would mediate the relationship between relationship length and satisfaction. A sample of 72 undergraduate students in romantic relationships completed validated measures of emotional understanding, emotion management, regulation difficulties, and relationship satisfaction. Contrary to expectations, no …

The Impact Of Puzzles On Short-Term Attention, Mauricio Rodriguez May 2025

The Impact Of Puzzles On Short-Term Attention, Mauricio Rodriguez

Psychology

Successfully solving Sudoku puzzles requires constant diverting of attention to certain puzzle elements. Previous research has shown that puzzles, including Sudoku, aid in cognitive functioning and the aging process (Lin et al., 2023). Social media use has become increasingly popular for younger generations. With this trend has come various mental health complications, including shorter attention spans (Sha & Dong, 2021). This study tested undergraduate college students and the impact puzzle solving (Sudoku, and mazes) had on attentional capabilities. Our study contributes to the literature by investigating if enhanced attention results from completing Sudoku puzzles for a short amount of time. …

Trapped In The Screen: How Digital Dependency Shapes Our Bodies And Minds, Jessica A. Supreme May 2025

Trapped In The Screen: How Digital Dependency Shapes Our Bodies And Minds, Jessica A. Supreme

Psychology

With each successive generation, time spent on cell phones continues to increase, raising concerns about the long-term effects of digital dependency on both physical and cognitive health. Prior research has linked excessive cellphone use to a range of issues including poor posture, eye strain, disrupted sleep, increased anxiety, reduced attention span, and addiction-like behaviors. These concerns are compounded by sedentary lifestyles, which reduce physical activity and contribute to risks such as cardiovascular disease and obesity. This study surveyed individuals aged 18–30 through an online questionnaire assessing daily cellphone usage, physical activity, and sleep habits. Results revealed that both men and …

Actitudes Lingüísticas Hacia El Español En Los Entornos Médicos Del Estado De Nueva York, Leann K. Nicholas May 2025

Actitudes Lingüísticas Hacia El Español En Los Entornos Médicos Del Estado De Nueva York, Leann K. Nicholas

Languages, Literatures & Cultures

In sociolinguistics, language attitudes refer to perceptions, opinions, or beliefs about a language or language variety and its speakers. These attitudes often reflect and reinforce ideologies that favor a dominant or standard language while stigmatizing minority or non-standard languages. New York State is a uniquely multilingual region encompassing both highly urban and rural areas. Its cultural and linguistic composition has been changing rapidly, including a growing Spanish-speaking population. Despite this shift, a gap exists in research on language attitudes toward Spanish-speaking individuals in New York’s healthcare settings. Healthcare is not a universal experience, and previous studies have shown that unaddressed …

Mental Health Advocates, Lawmakers Discuss Involuntary Commitment Expansion, Joshua T. Stone May 2025

Mental Health Advocates, Lawmakers Discuss Involuntary Commitment Expansion, Joshua T. Stone

Communication

New York has made it easier to involuntarily hospitalize people with severe mental illness as part of the state budget signed at the Capitol in early May by Gov. Kathy Hochul. State law previously allowed people with severe mental illness to be involuntarily hospitalized if two physicians determined they pose a threat to themselves or others. The updated law sets a standard to include people who are deemed unwilling or unable to support their basic needs, including food, shelter and medical care, due to their mental illness. However, opponents of the updated law say it could be misused to involuntarily …

Juror Decision-Making In Context, Kassandra Jovellanos May 2025

Juror Decision-Making In Context, Kassandra Jovellanos

Criminal Justice

The United States criminal justice system was designed to be one of fairness, where everyone is equal in the eyes of the law. However, that does not seem to be case, and one instance of this is how a defendant’s gender identity influences juror decision. Much literature exists on juror reaction to the cisgender binary, yet there is a gap in research on how juries react to transgender defendants and how pretrial media exposure interacts with this effect. This study aims to answer this question, as well as look into the interaction of pretrial publicity on juror decision when still …

Assessing The Accessibility Of Wound Care Education For Unhoused Individuals Of South Jersey, Marilyn A. Chen, Selma S. Benkhoukha, Allysone Martinez

Rowan-Virtua Research Day

Unhoused individuals face disproportionately high rates of wound-related complications due to environmental exposure, limited access to hygiene facilities, and delayed care. This study assessed the accessibility of wound care for the unhoused population in South Jersey, where approximately 2,607 individuals experience homelessness on any given night. Our research identified significant barriers to wound care access, including transportation limitations, lack of identification documents, absence of a physical mailing address, and language barriers. Data analysis revealed concerning trends: a 24% increase in New Jersey's homeless population in 2024, with Black/African American individuals representing 49% of the homeless population despite comprising only 12% …
