California’S Ban On Cruel Or Unusual Punishment: A State Constitutional Analysis Of Anti-Camping Ordinances, Anna R. Janson May 2025

California’S Ban On Cruel Or Unusual Punishment: A State Constitutional Analysis Of Anti-Camping Ordinances, Anna R. Janson

Connecticut Law Review

In Martin v. City of Boise, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit relied on the Cruel and Unusual Punishment Clause of the Eighth Amendment to rule that a class of involuntarily unhoused individuals may not be criminally punished for sleeping on public property in the absence of “sufficient alternatives” for all unhoused people. In Johnson v. City of Grants Pass, the Ninth Circuit elaborated that civil schemes which lead to criminal punishment are unconstitutional as well. However, the United States Supreme Court granted certiorari in the latter case and disrupted both Ninth Circuit decisions. The Court …

Initiating Remedies For Our Unconstitutional And Unlawful Residential Segregation, Richard Rothstein May 2025

Initiating Remedies For Our Unconstitutional And Unlawful Residential Segregation, Richard Rothstein

Connecticut Law Review

In 1866, Congress passed a Civil Rights Act outlawing burdens on freed slaves not also imposed on free whites, reasoning that racial discrimination—both public and private—undermined effective emancipation. However, subsequent Supreme Court jurisprudence did not honor or uphold this law and its progeny. Had it done so, the hard-fought promise of equality would not have been broken, the America we know today would not be so racially segregated, and the “badges and incidents” of slavery could have been timely eliminated.

The racial segregation of America’s neighborhoods is not, as was long thought, merely the result of private activities such as …

Evicted By Default, Nicole G. Summers, Justin Steil May 2025

Evicted By Default, Nicole G. Summers, Justin Steil

Connecticut Law Review

The prevalence of default judgments in eviction cases affects housing stability and raises concerns about access to procedural justice for tenants. There is substantial variation across states in the rules governing default judgments that may contribute to variation in the frequency of eviction cases ending in defaults. In this Article, we first construct an original dataset of eviction case data from one jurisdiction and analyze that quantitatively, assessing the share of eviction cases that experience a default, the share of cases that are cured, and the correlates of cases ending in default judgment. Second, we review the state of the …

The New Reliability Override, Benjamin Rolsma May 2025

The New Reliability Override, Benjamin Rolsma

Connecticut Law Review

Section 202(c) of the Federal Power Act grants the Secretary of Energy a sweeping authority to exempt electric generation and transmission facilities from any federal, state, or local environmental laws. When Congress first adopted § 202(c) in 1935, it designed the provision as an emergency power that federal regulators could use to force fractious utilities to work together to preserve electricity reliability in times of war or natural disaster. But in the last decade things changed.

This Article, drawing on a novel catalog of all § 202(c) emergencies from the provision’s nearly ninety-year history, is the first to comprehensively describe …

Compiling Haskell Into Lean: A Common Abstract Syntax For Haskell And Interactive Theorem Provers, Talitha Holcombe May 2025

Compiling Haskell Into Lean: A Common Abstract Syntax For Haskell And Interactive Theorem Provers, Talitha Holcombe

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (MS) Theses

In this work, we introduce a program conversion tool, HS-TO-LEAN, that uses GHC's ghc-lib-parser API to translate Haskell programs into Lean code, which is then validated by the Lean compiler. The repo can be found at https://github.com/holcombet/hs-to-lean/tree/main. The result is a successful compilation of a fragment of Haskell into correct and executable Lean code that users can prove theorems about. We conducted a case study using a heap sort algorithm to support our claim that HS-TO-LEAN produces verifiable Lean code. Our approach is inspired by recent advances in formal verification of Haskell programs in Coq, and we currently restrict our …

Developing And Validating An Emotion Recognition Test For Policing, Kyle Mclean, Trey Bussey, Justin Nix, Jeff Rojek, Abigail Curran, Vivian Ta-Johnson, Geoffrey P. Alpert

Sociology Publications

Purpose: Police executives and criminologists alike have advocated for the incorporation of emotional intelligence in the hiring and training of police officers. Despite general consensus that emotional intelligence is important for a variety of outcomes in policing, most published studies on the topic have relied on crude measures, such as self-report assessments. While self-report tests are validated for many uses, their applicability as an objective measure of skills is limited.

Design/Methodology: Using three studies, this paper outlines the development and validation of an emotion recognition test specifically intended for policing. The first study outlines the construction of the …

Damaging Ramifications To Unprocessed Trauma: Intergenerational Alcoholism In James Joyce’S A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man And William Faulkner’S The Sound And The Fury, Haley Chamer May 2025

Damaging Ramifications To Unprocessed Trauma: Intergenerational Alcoholism In James Joyce’S A Portrait Of The Artist As A Young Man And William Faulkner’S The Sound And The Fury, Haley Chamer

Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects

In my essay, I examine how James Joyce’s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury display how dysfunctional patterns of behavior by alcoholic fathers perpetuate intergenerational patterns of emotional immaturity and stunted individual development for their oldest sons. I explore parental alcoholism’s negative effect on a child through the characters of Stephen Dedalus in A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and Quentin Compson in The Sound and the Fury. I investigate the similarities between Stephen and Quentin, who, just like Joyce and Faulkner, are each the …

The Fight Against Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus Clarkii): Examination Of The Implementation And Efficiency Of Intensive Trapping And The Winner-Loser Effect As Management Techniques, Emily Klimczak May 2025

The Fight Against Red Swamp Crayfish (Procambarus Clarkii): Examination Of The Implementation And Efficiency Of Intensive Trapping And The Winner-Loser Effect As Management Techniques, Emily Klimczak

Great Lakes Center Masters Theses

Aquatic invasive species are not native to a location and have negative impacts on their surrounding environments. Crayfish invasions have been documented worldwide, but none are as widespread as the red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii). Red swamp crayfish currently are found in over 40 countries globally and are invasive on every continent, except Antarctica. Outside of their native range, impacts include reduced native crayfish abundance, loss of macrophytes, increased disease transmission, loss of native snails and other macroinvertebrates, and damage to dykes and paddies. Attempted management techniques for the red swamp crayfish include habitat modification, male sterilization via …

Butterfly Effects: Women And Criminal Law, Pavithra Rajendran May 2025

Butterfly Effects: Women And Criminal Law, Pavithra Rajendran

Washington International Law Journal

Through a comparative analysis of the criminal laws of Sri Lanka and the United States, this paper examines how Sri Lanka’s legal framework on sexual offenses often hinders women’s access to justice and reinforces systemic gender discrimination. Recognizing the structural constraints inherited from older common law traditions, it underscores the potential for reform through targeted, gradual changes, drawing on developments in modern common law in the United States and relevant international legal standards. The discussion unfolds in three parts: first, a feminist critique of exiting criminal laws in postcolonial; common law systems such as Sri Lanka’s; second, a comparative analysis …

Taiwan: Legal Status, Legitimacy, And Lawfare, Monica Glenzer May 2025

Taiwan: Legal Status, Legitimacy, And Lawfare, Monica Glenzer

Washington International Law Journal

This paper seeks to offer a fresh perspective into the Chinese Communist Party’s (“CCP”) implementation of lawfare to assert dominance over Taiwan. Rather than viewing lawfare as one doctrine with one outcome, this paper aims to reorganize lawfare in its many uses, identifying the three primary categories that the CCP uses to extend its sovereignty over Taiwan: (1) using law to legitimize a nation’s own goals, (2) using law to delegitimize an adversary’s actions, and (3) weaponizing an adversary’s laws. This paper seeks to analyze and recharacterize current and historical events in terms of these three lawfare categories, demonstrating how …

China's Experiment Of Dual-Class Equity Structures: Regulatory Frameworks And Investor Protection, Sang Yop Kang, Terry Ling May 2025

China's Experiment Of Dual-Class Equity Structures: Regulatory Frameworks And Investor Protection, Sang Yop Kang, Terry Ling

Washington International Law Journal

Mainland China traditionally upheld the one-share-one-vote (OSOV) principle. Since 2019, however, Chinese authorities have introduced the dual-class equity structure (DCES) for innovative enterprises. Due to investor-protection concerns, China’s DCES operates on a “stringent approval system,” with only eight corporations listed under DCES as of December 31, 2024. This Article provides a comprehensive policy analysis of the Chinese DCES system, including empirical analyses of the eight existing cases. It explores legal and economic aspects of investor protection within China’s DCES, examining “three sets of investor safeguard measures”: (1) “three numerically specified rules” (e.g., 10% equity rule, 10-time voting-right rule, and 2/3 …

Justifying The Law Of Unjust Enrichment: A Confucian Perspective, Siyi Lin May 2025

Justifying The Law Of Unjust Enrichment: A Confucian Perspective, Siyi Lin

Washington International Law Journal

In a wide range of situations, the law in different jurisdictions requires that a person who has been unjustly enriched at another’s expense make restitution to the other. However, what justifies the liability for unjust enrichment? This fundamental question has perplexed unjust enrichment scholars, especially in the common law world, for decades, with various justificatory ideas being proposed while no consensus has been reached. This article explores the justification of the law of unjust enrichment within the context of China’s historical, legal, and social frameworks for the first time. A historical review reveals that the notion of unjust enrichment has …

Akinsola, Carina King, Julius Salako, Damola Bakare, Halima Usman, Claudia Hanson, Adegoke G. Falade, Sibylle Herzig Van Wees

Centre of Excellence in Women and Child Health

Vaccination is a cost-effective public health intervention that has saved many lives and improved well-being [1]. Between 2011 and 2020, over 20 million deaths were believed to have been averted due to vaccinations in GAVI supported countries [2]. Moreover, globally, Carter et al. estimated additional 51 million deaths are expected to be prevented from vaccines between 2021 and 2030 [3]. Yet, despite the importance of vaccines, there have been concerns about low uptake of vaccines globally [4,5]. This concern was accentuated during the COVID-19 pandemic. Waning vaccine confidence has been recognized as a leading threat to global health [[6], [4], …

Government Guidance Funds And Corporate Innovation: An Empirical Examination Based On Hangzhou, Huaping Wang May 2025

Government Guidance Funds And Corporate Innovation: An Empirical Examination Based On Hangzhou, Huaping Wang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Since the establishment of China's first market-oriented government guidance fund in 2002, these funds have actively played a supportive role in addressing market failures and promoting the innovative development of technology enterprises by reducing information asymmetry in the primary equity market, releasing positive signals, and alleviating financing constraints. With the establishment and development of China's multi-tiered government guidance fund system, related research has gradually emerged. However, current studies primarily explore whether government guidance funds have fulfilled their role in fostering innovation from a macro perspective, with limited in-depth discussion from a micro-level on how these funds should conduct their investment …

Research On The Structural Antecedents And Contingencies Of Fluid Team Performance, Xiaodong Zhang May 2025

Research On The Structural Antecedents And Contingencies Of Fluid Team Performance, Xiaodong Zhang

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

In response to rapidly evolving markets and the pursuit of organizational agility, fluid teams—characterized by dynamic membership and flexible structures—have become prevalent as a key organizational form for addressing complex tasks and uncertainty. However, inherent challenges such as frequent member mobility and multiple project participation pose significant management difficulties and performance risks, including project delays and cost overruns, particularly evident in China's fintech sector. While existing research has begun examining fluid teams, systematic investigation into their structural antecedents and performance mechanisms—especially their contingencies across contexts—remains limited.

The study examines structural antecedents and contingencies of fluid team performance through a mixed-methods …

Threads Of Time: A Lifespan Perspective On Temporal Simulations, Self-Continuity And Meaning In Life, Jonathan Louis Jie Sheng Chia May 2025

Threads Of Time: A Lifespan Perspective On Temporal Simulations, Self-Continuity And Meaning In Life, Jonathan Louis Jie Sheng Chia

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

This research investigates how temporal simulations—prospection and retrospection — influence meaning in life (MIL) through the mediating role of self-continuity, and whether these relationships vary with age. Across two studies, self-continuity mediated these associations, but the specific pathways appeared to be nuanced. In Study 1, using a correlational design, frequency of prospection and retrospection positively and negatively predicted MIL via self-continuity respectively. These indirect effects, however, became nonsignificant when accounting for personality and dispositional affect, suggesting the effects of temporal simulation frequency to be primarily driven by these individual differences. Study 2 experimentally manipulated temporal simulations. Prospection enhanced MIL through …

Generative Artificial Intelligence Dependency: Scale Development, Validation, And Its Motivational, Behavioral, And Psychological Correlates, Adalia Yin Hui Goh

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

The growing integration of generative artificial intelligence (AI) into everyday life has raised questions about its potential psychological and behavioral consequences. The present research develops and validates the Generative AI Dependency Scale, a multidimensional tool developed to assess individual differences in dependency on generative AI systems. Across six studies involving 1,223 participants from the United States and Singapore, the Generative AI Dependency Scale demonstrated strong psychometric properties, including a stable three-factor structure (cognitive preoccupation, negative consequences, withdrawal) and good test-retest reliability (ICC = .85). Confirmatory factor analysis supported a higher-order dependency construct, and scalar measurement invariance was established across sex …

Using A Process Evaluation In Extension Programming: Takeaways For Teams, Cristina Connolly, Jeantyl Norze, Stacey F. Stearns

Journal of Human Sciences and Extension

Health fields use process evaluations to measure how closely an intervention aligns with its intended delivery. Despite their potential for improving Cooperative Extension programming and impacts, process evaluations are not widely used outside the medical sciences. We adapted the process evaluation framework for Extension use. The components assess project components such as content, dose delivered, dose received, and reach, as well as moderating factors such as quality of delivery, participant responsiveness, complexity, facilitation strategy, recruitment, and context. The modified process evaluation framework was used to assess an Extension project in the Northeast region of the U.S. Extension teams in the …

Current Wind Simulation Techniques, Keegan J. Sims May 2025

Current Wind Simulation Techniques, Keegan J. Sims

Theses/Capstones/Creative Projects

Not much exists in the realm of wind simulation. For what does exist involves tornadoes, and even then that is stretched far and few between. Due to this we have a lot of room to explore, and figure things out. How do we simulate real time wind? My capstone project involves a simple wind algorithm, how does it compare to what does currently exist? This paper covers the papers about wind and how it it interacts with objects and itself.
