Art Historical Research Of The Intercession Of Christ And The Virgin, Attributed To Lorenzo Monaco, Lauren Watts May 2025

Art Historical Research Of The Intercession Of Christ And The Virgin, Attributed To Lorenzo Monaco, Lauren Watts

Curiosity

This research examines The Intercession of Christ and the Virgin, a painting attributed to Lorenzo Monaco. The painting is tempera on canvas, and is housed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This research looks at the painting through a phenomenological lens in context of its original site, iconographic themes, and feminine spirituality. The research posits that the painting’s intercessory figures—Christ and the Virgin Mary—construct a narrative amplifying themes of feminine spirituality, challenging the misogynistic structures of quattrocento Florentine ecclesiastical culture while remaining within the bounds of contemporary orthodoxy. Studying the painting at Metropolitan Museum facilitated in-depth visual analysis, supplemented by …

A Curriculum Development Study: Crafting And Teaching Curricula For Ell Students In China, Kayleigh Kearsley

Curiosity

When teaching English Language Learners (ELL), it is important to understand the best practices and tools available to teach these students effectively and engagingly. In this curriculum development study, I examine and utilize effective and engaging practices for teaching ELL students and offers ten lesson plans taught to a native Chinese speaker that reflect the implementation and development of these practices. Research consisted of both practical and theoretical sources concerning critical pedagogy for teaching ELL students. An understanding of students’ background shapes an understanding of language transfer, thus providing a more tailored teaching approach (Rigby, 2004). The scaffolding of lessons …

An Exploration Of The Economic And Social Impacts Of The Grupo Social Once, Annalaura B. Swinea May 2025

An Exploration Of The Economic And Social Impacts Of The Grupo Social Once, Annalaura B. Swinea

Honors Theses

This thesis explores the economic and social impacts of Grupo Social ONCE, a Spanish institution that operates at the intersection of business, philanthropy, and social inclusion. ONCE has evolved from a small lottery initiative for the blind into a multifaceted organization comprising JuegosONCE (its lottery operation), Fundación ONCE (a philanthropic foundation), and ILUNION (a business group promoting inclusive employment). Through historical analysis, organizational review, and employment statistics, this study evaluates whether ONCE successfully fosters economic inclusion for people with disabilities. It argues that the hybrid model of Grupo Social ONCE creates a self-reinforcing cycle of social and economic empowerment …

Abstract

The Impact of Menstrual Cycle Phase on Upper Extremity Function

Background: There has been a significant rise in the number of female athletes participating across the spectrum of sports. While there are a multitude of research studies looking at physiology in sports on performance, training methods, and injuries; this research is general across genders. When it comes to female-specific physiology concerning training and injuries, there is little research. One such gender-specific physiological focus is the menstrual cycle in the female population. The literature suggests changes in joint laxity and muscle repair throughout the various phases of the menstrual cycle, …

All Decisions

In a holdover proceeding concerning a purportedly unregulated apartment, the landlord moved to dismiss the tenant's affirmative defenses and counterclaims, which alleged illegal deregulation and rent stabilization status, and sought summary judgment. The Appellate Term reversed the lower court, finding the tenant's rent stabilization allegations without merit as a matter of law. The court also held that claims of failure to provide reasonable accommodation are meritless in an end-of-lease holdover for an unregulated apartment. As the lease term expired and the landlord established prima facie entitlement to summary judgment, the landlord's motion was granted.

Treatment decisions in metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer are mostly guided by clinical variables, but efforts to molecularly monitor the disease remain hampered by challenges in acquiring tumor tissue repeatedly. In this study, we simultaneously profiled the genome copy number and exome in longitudinal plasma circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) acquired before, during, and upon progression to serial treatments with androgen signaling inhibitors and taxane chemotherapy from 60 patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (2-10 samples per patient). The genomic data were used to delineate the clonal substructure and evolutionary dynamics of each patient, and an evolutionary dynamic index was developed to …

Coronary Subclavian Steal Syndrome: A Rare But Deadly Complication In Post-Cabg Patients, Hazem Alakhras, Parvathy Sankar, James Goldstein

Conference Presentation Abstracts

Coronary Subclavian Steal Syndrome (CSSS) is a rare but serious complication of coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG). It occurs when the left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery is bypassed from the left subclavian artery (LSA) using the left internal mammary artery (LIMA). The syndrome arises due to stenosis of the LSA, leading to reduced blood flow through the LIMA. This triggers retrograde flow from the LIMA to the distal LSA, resulting in myocardial ischemia despite patent grafts. Clinical presentation can vary from asymptomatic cases to severe manifestations such as new-onset heart failure or acute coronary syndrome (ACS). A 79-year-old female …

Case description A 78-year-old female with a past medical history of DLBCL, coronary artery disease, and cryptogenic strokes presented …

Dying Young, Brianne L. Overton May 2025

Dying Young, Brianne L. Overton

Dissertations

Death, often perceived as a disruption to daily life, is an inevitable part of the human experience. While older adults may develop familiarity with mortality through the collective experience of personal and familial losses, young adults generally have limited exposure to death. Despite this, young adults, defined as individuals aged 20 to 34, represent approximately 20% of the U.S. population (U.S. Census Bureau, 2020), and the mortality rate within this age group has been rising over the past decade (Woolf & Schoomaker, 2019). Death among young adults is often overlooked in societal narratives and medical research, which primarily focus on …

Black individuals experience worse survival after a diagnosis of high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma (HGSC) than White individuals and are underrepresented in ovarian cancer research. To date, the understanding of the molecular and genomic heterogeneity of HGSC is based primarily on the evaluation of tumors from White individuals. In the present study, we performed whole-exome sequencing on HGSC samples from 211 Black patients to identify significantly mutated genes and characterize mutational signatures, assessing their distributions by gene expression subtypes. The occurrence and frequency of somatic mutations and signatures by self-reported race were compared with historic data from The Cancer Genome Atlas …

Preparation And Characterization Of Phthalocyanine Photocatalysts Supported On Mixed Metal Oxides, Malak Alsharhan

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

This research explores the development of hybrid photocatalysts by combining GeO₂ doping of metal oxides with phthalocyanine functionalization to enhance the degradation of Methyl Orange (MO) dye under visible light. Four metal oxide supports, TiO₂, Al₂O₃, SiO₂, and ZrO₂, were tested in their pristine form, then modified with GeO₂ and further functionalized by solution adsorption using two types of zinc phthalocyanines: F₁₆PcZn and F₆₄PcZn.

The degradation of MO was monitored using UV-Vis spectroscopy, and kinetic models were applied to evaluate the reaction rates. The results showed that the bare oxides exhibited little to no photocatalytic performance. GeO₂ doping …
