Age-related white matter (WM) microstructure maturation and decline occur throughout the human lifespan, complementing the process of gray matter development and degeneration. Here, we create normative lifespan reference curves for global and regional WM microstructure by harmonizing diffusion MRI (dMRI)-derived data from ten public datasets (N = 40,898 subjects; age: 3–95 years; 47.6% male). We tested three harmonization methods on regional diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) based fractional anisotropy (FA), a metric of WM microstructure, extracted using the ENIGMA-DTI pipeline. ComBat-GAM harmonization provided multi-study trajectories most consistent with known WM maturation peaks. Lifespan FA reference curves were validated with test-retest data …

School Resources And Teen Suicide Risk, 1991–2016: A Longitudinal Analysis At The State Level, Megan Thiele Strong, Javier Corredor
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
Purpose: Research shows that teachers’ salaries influence educational and non-educational outcomes. And still, too few studies explore whether teacher compensation patterns correlate with student mental health outcomes. This research attends to this gap and asks: at the state level, does the average K-12 teacher salary predict teen suicide risk? Design/methodology/approach: We use an original panel time-series dataset which includes average teacher salary, teen suicide rate and economic, religious and sociocultural control variables at the state level. We analyze this data using two analytical strategies. First, we build mixed models with teachers’ salaries and the covariates as fixed effects and state …

Experiences Of Support And Success For Students Of Color In The Midwifery Educational Setting, Laura Jenson
Experiences Of Support And Success For Students Of Color In The Midwifery Educational Setting, Laura Jenson
Dissertations and Theses
The United States spends more on healthcare than any other developed country, yet perinatal health outcomes are among the worst, particularly for Black and Indigenous pregnant women and people. Structural and societal racism has contributed greatly to these inequities, and while a diverse perinatal healthcare workforce has the potential to mitigate the impact of pervasive racism, professions such as nurse-midwifery have evolved over time to be predominately white. The purpose of this study is to explore how students of color experience support and apply personal strategies for success in the midwifery educational setting. A basic qualitative study was done using …

Marine Viruses: Biogeochemical Implications And Potential Applications, Faiza A Fattouh, Sahar W.M. Hassan
Blue Economy
Viruses are the most plentiful microorganisms in the ecosystem and exhibit excessive diversity in relations to infection cycle, host specificity and size. Since the discovery of great viral distribution in marine ecosystems, the ecological significance of viruses to marine environment has become gradually evident. Lytic viruses trigger lysis of the host cell to give the new progeny and thus readdress nutrients from higher to lower trophic levels. Consequently, marine viruses exhibit direct or indirect influence on the capacity of carbon sequestration, exchange of gases in the ocean and biogeochemical cycles in addition to affecting microbial population dynamics. Marine viruses are …

Communication Research Trends
Law arises from custom and precedents as well as from formal legislation. It is • constantly mixing these in different combinations, developing and changing to meet different historical needs and creating diverse jungles of regulations and interpretations among human societies.
Differences in the various national systems of law contribute to even greater complexities in international relations, which nations constantly struggle to resolve through a body of understandings, agreements and treaties based on negotiation and compromise: 'international law'. If all else fails, they resort to remote or proximate threats of economic coercion and military force to impose control over their relationships. …

Your Accent Sounds Tough: Exploring Shifting Indexicalities Of Appalachians Through The Lens Of Citizen Sociolinguistics, Sarah Ramsey
Your Accent Sounds Tough: Exploring Shifting Indexicalities Of Appalachians Through The Lens Of Citizen Sociolinguistics, Sarah Ramsey
Honors Theses
This study investigates how Appalachian English is perceived in online discourse, focusing on the intersections of dialect, identity, and ideology. In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene’s 2024 devastation across Southern Appalachia, YouTube became a site of unexpected metalinguistic and cultural commentary. A citizen sociolinguistics framework is used to examine how outsiders engage with perceived Appalachian English, especially through discussions of class, gender, and accents.
Findings show that Appalachian identity is more favorably received when speakers minimize regional dialect features and align with urban, mainstream ideals. In contrast, speakers who are strongly marked as Appalachian, especially the rural and working class, …

A Dark Light: Leni Riefenstahl As A Case Study In Historical Memory, Elizabeth Arnold
Linfield University Student Symposium: A Celebration of Scholarship and Creative Achievement
Leni Riefenstahl, an acclaimed female director during Nazi-era Germany, remains one of the most polarizing figures in film history, simultaneously celebrated for her technical innovations and condemned for her complicity in Nazi propaganda. While historians have typically examined Riefenstahl in regard to either her gender or her work for the Nazi regime, this study offers a more holistic approach to her. This paper examines how American audiences perceived Riefenstahl and her work from 1933 to 1945, analyzing the ways in which gender and power shape evaluations of one’s life and career. Drawing on primary sources such as Library of Congress …

Lowell’s letters to Sedgwick portray two people with extremely different tastes and views on poetry, and even what exactly they considered poetry to be. Lowell’s letters to Sedgwick are infused with her voice, and charisma, and her strong belief in her work—especially that of free verse, modern and imagist forms of poetry. Whereas Sedgwick despite also having a passion for poetry had a favor for a more traditional sense. Lowell often commented that her poems would probably not be published with quips at Sedgwick's choice of poems he chose to take and how he chose to describe them. However, they …

A Study Of Psychoactive Cannabis Components Via Derivatization And Analysis By Gc-Ei-Ms, Skyler Yates-Johnson, James V. Defrancesco
Undergraduate Research and Engagement Symposium
The cannabis plant (cannabis sativa) contains numerous psychoactive components that can be analyzed in numerous ways. Some of these components are chemically acidic and when heated, convert into other psychoactive components. For example, delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THC-A) converts into delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) when heated. Our laboratory has developed a technique to capture the acidic form via chemical derivatization, which allows for the identification of THC-A in the high temperature environment of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). This portion of the project focused on determining the stoichiometry required for derivatization.

Handwritten Digit Recognition Using Machine Learning, Dipok Deb
Data Science and Data Mining
Handwritten Digit Recognition (HDR) remains a fundamental benchmark in pattern recognition and machine learning due to its practical applications and inherent classification challenges posed by diverse handwriting styles. This study investigates and compares two classical statistical classifiers—Gaussian Naive Bayes (GNB) and Linear Discriminant Analysis (LDA)—to recognize the digits from the MNIST dataset. Both models assume underlying normality in feature distributions and offer computational efficiency, making them suitable for high-dimensional input such as image pixels. Using 60,000 training and 10,000 test samples, we evaluate model performance through accuracy, precision, recall, F1 score, and confusion matrices. The results reveal that while GNB …
Clustering Dataset Using K-Mean Clustering, Dipok Deb
Clustering Dataset Using K-Mean Clustering, Dipok Deb
Data Science and Data Mining
Clustering is a fundamental technique in unsupervised machine learning, widely applied in various domains such as pattern recognition, data segmentation, and anomaly detection. This study evaluates the performance of the K-Means clustering algorithm on multiple benchmark datasets, including low-dimensional, high-dimensional, and imbalanced datasets. The clustering results are assessed using four key evaluation metrics: Mean Squared Error (MSE), Adjusted Rand Index (ARI), Normalized Mutual Information (NMI), and Silhouette Score. Experimental results demonstrate that K-Means performs effectively on datasets with well-separated clusters, particularly in high-dimensional spaces, where it achieves near-perfect clustering accuracy. However, its performance deteriorates in datasets with overlapping clusters and …

Optical satellite performance improves with increased surface area, which enhances light capture and sensor input. Deployable array mechanisms allow satellites to remain compact during launch and expand in orbit. This study focuses on designing passive hinges in rigid-panel origami-based deployable satellites for optical applications. A novel kinematic coupling method is developed, incorporating magnets, compact Lamina Emergent Torsional (LET) joints, and principles from Maxwell couplings. This system autonomously achieves precise alignment without motorized actuation reducing complexity. The design process involved iterative testing of ten two-panel hinge prototypes to identify the most effective designs. These were integrated into a degree-four vertex pattern …

Recreation is growing in desert areas of the western United States, and mapping the expansion of these activities is vital to management and conservation efforts. Desert ecosystems provide many critical ecosystem services, including carbon storage, and the growing popularity of outdoor recreation in Western US desert regions poses a threat to these ecosystems. Unregulated recreational activities can harm desert plant and soil health, including the functioning of biological soil crusts. This research project focuses on mapping several types of popular recreational activities in order to monitor and evaluate the impact of these activities within the Indian Creek areas of Bears …
