Purpose: Adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) significantly diminishes recurrence and mortality risks in hormone receptor-positive breast cancer (BCa) patients. Nonetheless, suboptimal adherence and premature discontinuation during the initial year of treatment undermine these positive outcomes. This study aims to understand the potential diverse factors associated with perceived barriers to AET compliance at the onset of medication. Methods: We assessed perceived barriers to AET using the ASK-20 instrument for BCa patients initiating AET within 3 months. Our survey also included demographic variables (e.g., musculoskeletal symptoms) and clinical traits (e.g., medication type). Stepwise regression analyses were employed to elucidate the links between multilevel …

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
Objective. Brain-controlled functional electrical stimulation (FES) of the upper limb has been used to restore arm function to paralyzed individuals in the lab. Able-bodied individuals naturally modulate limb stiffness throughout movements and in anticipation of perturbations. Our goal is to develop, via simulation, a framework for incorporating stiffness modulation into the currently-used ‘lookup-table-based’ FES control systems while addressing several practical issues: (1) optimizing stimulation across muscles with overlap in function, (2) coordinating stimulation across joints, and (3) minimizing errors due to fatigue. Our calibration process also needs to account for when current spread causes additional muscles to become activated. Approach. …

The Role Of Polo-Like Kinase In Polarizing Germline Determinants In The C. Elegans Zygote, Amelia J. Kim
Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations
Asymmetric cell divisions are essential processes across diverse organisms that give rise to two daughter cells with different cell fates, allowing to the generation of cell diversity. During these divisions, the establishment and maintenance of cell polarity is required to control the segregation of cell fate determinants along a polarity axis. Moreover, cell polarity must be coordinated with the cell cycle to ensure the precise spatiotemporal distribution of cell determinants.
In the C. elegans one-cell embryo, PAR proteins establish anterior-posterior polarity that directs the asymmetric segregation of cytoplasmic cell fate regulators. Following symmetry breaking, anterior PAR proteins (PAR-3, PAR-6, PKC-3) …

Unified Evaluation Of Real-World Iot-Based Federated Learning, Yi Gu
Unified Evaluation Of Real-World Iot-Based Federated Learning, Yi Gu
Master's Theses
Federated learning (FL) is a novel paradigm that enables the training of a global machine learning (ML) model across distributed devices by exchanging model parameters instead of raw data in the training process. Internet of Things (IoT) devices typically operate with limited resources, have weaker security protections, and are more vulnerable to potential thermal stress (TS). Current evaluations of FL are mostly conducted through simulations of multiple clients on a single device. However, there remains a gap in understanding how FL performs under TS in real-world, low-power IoT environments. Conformal prediction (CP) is an effective method for quantifying uncertainty in …
