From Relic To Wreath: Investigating Victorian Hair Art, Ella Kauffman May 2025

From Relic To Wreath: Investigating Victorian Hair Art, Ella Kauffman

Senior Seminars and Capstones

Museum patrons often felt disgust and awe after I would tell them what the intricate wreaths in front of them were made of when I gave tours at the Crow Wing County Historical Society. Hair art was popular in the United States and Britain in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, with its peak occurring between the 1860s and 1900.1 Despite its popularity, it is not often discussed at length in fields that study Victorian artwork or bodily artwork. Many Victorian scholars were entirely put off by the medium because of the morbidity, and the practice is often dismissed as a …

The Small Worlds Of Childhood: Philosophy, Poetics, And The Queer Temporalities Of Early Life, Lauren Shizuko Stone May 2025

The Small Worlds Of Childhood: Philosophy, Poetics, And The Queer Temporalities Of Early Life, Lauren Shizuko Stone

Gender & Sexuality

The Small Worlds of Childhood argues that prose representations of bourgeois childhood contain surprising opportunities to reflect on the temporality of experience. In their narratives of children at home in their everyday worlds, Adalbert Stifter, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Walter Benjamin are not only able to shed a unique light on key issues in the history of philosophy. They also offer a queer critique of the normative expectation that the literature of childhood is oriented toward the future.

Stone shows that when writers engage in philosophical storytelling, showing children tarrying in quotidian experience, they dislodge childhood from its nostalgic value …

Musicals, Tv Shows, And Movies, Oh My! How Adaptations Of Literature Affect Perception Of The Story, Sophia Bushay May 2025

Musicals, Tv Shows, And Movies, Oh My! How Adaptations Of Literature Affect Perception Of The Story, Sophia Bushay

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine how different adaptations are perceived by audiences and how those adaptations affect interpretations of the original literature. Adaptations of literature are growing increasingly popular, and with each new adaptation comes fans of the source material who either love or hate the adaptation. Following their reaction, fans will either double down on what is important that they feel an adaptation missed, or become more lenient about what was changed from page to screen. Each form of media has its own merits and pitfalls to be utilized, which in turn forces changes to be …

Link - A New Interface: Bridging Social Isolation Through Immersive Discovery, Andrew Phillips May 2025

Link - A New Interface: Bridging Social Isolation Through Immersive Discovery, Andrew Phillips

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Link: A New Interface explores how public spaces—historically designed to encourage social interaction—have declined in vibrancy due to shifting behaviors, remote work, and the long-term effects of the Covid pandemic. Modern digitalization, while offering convenience, has also contributed to decreased face-to-face engagement, reduced attention spans, and increased social isolation. This thesis proposes a revitalization of public social spaces by reimagining digitalization not as a distraction, but as a tool to foster immersive, multisensory experiences that reconnect people. The project focuses on bridging generational divides, nurturing meaningful social interactions, and creating inclusive spaces that support intergenerational engagement. The methodology introduces a …

Resilience Through Experience, Nathan Johnson May 2025

Resilience Through Experience, Nathan Johnson

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Resilience Through Experience answers the question: How can architecture contribute thematically to the climate crisis? The project transforms and renews a polluted EPA Superfund site in Pasadena, Texas into a center for ecological research and climate simulation. The design constitutes an addition to the new Apocalyptic Architecture: architecture which actualizes the climate crisis for its users.

The site is split into two primary zones: an active soil washing pit that will reclaim the site from its pollution and a constructed bioswale wetland that floods every two hours. The endless cycle of rising water levels will serve as a spatial and …

Restoration In Slowing Down, Alejandra Montalvo May 2025

Restoration In Slowing Down, Alejandra Montalvo

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

As public community colleges like Kennesaw State University, Marietta Campus, see an increase in admissions due to the rise in higher education enrollment, the social, emotional, and creative well-being of first-year and first-generation students can be at risk. Public community colleges often become overwhelmed with other programs, leading to the neglect or underfunding of resources that genuinely support students. These students often face unique challenges in adapting to academic pressures, new social environments, and balancing personal and cultural expectations.

This thesis proposes the development of a design framework for restorative, neutral third places on public community college campuses. These spaces …

Sculpting Healing Spaces: Bridging The Gaps In Cancer Care Facilities, Mayra B. Mendez May 2025

Sculpting Healing Spaces: Bridging The Gaps In Cancer Care Facilities, Mayra B. Mendez

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

Healthcare environments become a vital component in patient outcomes, particularly in Cancer Care Facilities, where the emotional and physical requirements of treatment are profound. Exploring how the reconsideration of cancer care facilities can reshape the patient’s experience and improve the healing outcomes. Traditional clinical spaces, often sterile and impersonal, can increase patient stress, anxiety, and discomfort. Cancer care facilities in the Atlanta region are struggling to meet the demands of modern cancer treatment due to architectural limitations such as overcrowded spaces, inefficient layouts, and a lack of patient-centered environments. How can the integration and experience of Biophilic Design Principles bridge …

Age Well Spaces: A New Model For Elderly Healthcare Architecture, Will Traylor, Ameen Farooq May 2025

Age Well Spaces: A New Model For Elderly Healthcare Architecture, Will Traylor, Ameen Farooq

Bachelor of Architecture Theses - 5th Year

In America, most try to plan for every aspect of life from birth. The country is home to some of the most advanced education systems in the world and has office buildings that aim to not only prioritize work efficiency, but also worker health. From cradle to Casket, architects challenge themselves with the task of making everyday spaces better. It was my experience and privilege over the past few years to bear witness and assist my grandparents through the last, fragile stages of life. I watched as each of them moved from home life, to assisted living, and then nursing …

From Farmers To Architects To Artists: Who Lived And Worked In The David Adler Estate, Libertyville, Illinois, 1864-2020, Rebecca D. Katz May 2025

From Farmers To Architects To Artists: Who Lived And Worked In The David Adler Estate, Libertyville, Illinois, 1864-2020, Rebecca D. Katz

Honors Capstones

The thesis of this paper investigates the transformation of the David Adler Estate from its creation in 1864 to the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020. The way our communities’ function is based in local histories, yet many individuals fail to see the importance of it. Through research focused on census data, newspapers, and oral histories, a clear timeline was formed in how the David Adler Estate was utilized. By examining the estate’s progression through agricultural, architectural, and artistic phases, this paper shows how a single house can reflect the growth of a region. Grounded in the belief that local history holds …

Symmetry Induced Pairing In Dark Excitonic Condensate At Finite Temperature, Adham Alkady, Anatoly Kuklov May 2025

Symmetry Induced Pairing In Dark Excitonic Condensate At Finite Temperature, Adham Alkady, Anatoly Kuklov

Publications and Research

Bose Einstein condensate of dark intervalley excitons must be inherently multi-component because of crystalline symmetries. Since valleys hosting such excitons are separated by large quasi-momenta, a minimal inter-component Josephson-type coupling can only be established between pairs of excitons from the time-reversed valleys. As a result, a paired condensate can emerge at finite temperature, that is, the off-diagonal order exists for the pairs from the time-reversed valleys, while the individual valleys are disordered. This prediction follows from the elementary mean field analysis regardless of the dimensionality. However, as Monte Carlo simulations show, no such a phase exists in 3D crystals. Instead, …

A Proposed Metals Recovery Assessment Protocol To Evaluate Mine Waste For Critical Minerals And Rare Earth Recovery Prior To Site Remediation, Claire Mbia May 2025

A Proposed Metals Recovery Assessment Protocol To Evaluate Mine Waste For Critical Minerals And Rare Earth Recovery Prior To Site Remediation, Claire Mbia

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

The Metals Recovery Assessment (MRA) protocol involves collecting and evaluating information to assess the possibility for recovery of critical or rare earth minerals at mine sites to offset remediation or redevelopment costs associated with land reuse at Superfund or closed mine sites. This protocol provides a tool to implement metals recovery in conjunction with property reuse, and may involve a review of available records, visual inspections of the site, sample collection and discussions with local government officials and community members. The selection for metals recovery would be intended to both achieve metals reduction which may be required for the protection …

Unraveling The Impact Of Vessel Geometry In Resonant Acoustic Mixing, Jefferson Guthrie May 2025

Unraveling The Impact Of Vessel Geometry In Resonant Acoustic Mixing, Jefferson Guthrie

Graduate Theses & Non-Theses

This study aimed to advance the understanding of ResonantAcoustic® Mixing (RAM) and its application in industrial powder processing. RAM, which consists of vertically oscillating boundaries operating at nominally 60 Hz with accelerations up to 100 g’s, is particularly effective for mixing fine powders and materials. RAM is able to complete mixing processes 10 to 100 times faster than traditional methods without the risk of cross contamination. Despite RAM’s growing potential, the underlying mechanisms of RAM are not fully understood, limiting its optimization and broader adoption. Research in this study sought to bridge existing gaps in understanding by investigating the influence …

Pretrial Decision-Making In Brazil Under Inter-American Human Rights Law, Thiago Nascimento Dos Reis May 2025

Pretrial Decision-Making In Brazil Under Inter-American Human Rights Law, Thiago Nascimento Dos Reis

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

In recent decades, pretrial detention has been a key contributor to Brazil’s mass incarceration. This is true, despite domestic and international norms limiting pretrial detention to exceptional circumstances and mounting evidence linking it to worse outcomes for arrestees in their criminal proceedings and post-release life prospects. As a longitudinal multivariate pretrial research in Brazil, this Article investigates the key mechanisms and factors that explain pretrial detention in relation to inter-American human rights standards. This Article conducts a quantitative case study of the first one hundred days of detention for all 2,158 non-confidential flagrant arrests in the first eight months of …

Single-Owner Sociedades Within The Corporate Landscape Of Latin America, Nicolás José Muñiz Arias May 2025

Single-Owner Sociedades Within The Corporate Landscape Of Latin America, Nicolás José Muñiz Arias

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

The concept of a sociedad in Latin America has undergone profound changes throughout this century. Following the example set by the French Code de commerce of 1807, the sociedad was initially viewed as a contractual arrangement between two or more partners who make contributions to a business for purposes of sharing in the resulting profit or loss, wherein a plurality of partners was an intrinsic component. Nonetheless, the notion of a sociedad has evolved to entail the establishment of a separate legal entity, making the plurality of partners requirement increasingly obsolete for its formation and/or operation.

This Article describes the …

Examining The Brazilian Supreme Federal Court’S Expanded Powers In The Bolsonaro Era: A Win For Democracy Or A Turn Toward Autocracy?, Théo G. De Sá-Kaye

University of Miami Inter-American Law Review

As Jair Bolsonaro rose to popularity and was elected the 38th president of Brazil in 2018, the global community grew concerned over his very public disdain for the country’s democratic institutions and admiration for Brazil’s 22-year-long military dictatorship. The Bolsonaro administration was marked by repeated attacks on the judiciary, a heavily criticized response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and, eventually, the storming of Congress and the Brazilian Supreme Court by Bolsonaro’s supporters– mirroring the January 6th insurrection in the U.S. However, the most significant aspect of the Bolsonaro presidency may not lie solely in his actions, but in the response from …
