Code-Switching: A Study On College Students’ Languaging Practices, Neyda Perez May 2025

Code-Switching: A Study On College Students’ Languaging Practices, Neyda Perez

Honors Theses

My linguistic background is composed of many contrasting elements. I grew up speaking Spanish and English in rural Texas, and I have an accent. Words would have a southern drawl, and when saying words that were similar in English and Spanish, I would pronounce them with a Spanish accent. In contrast, many of my language arts teachers prior to high school put great value on Standard English. My accent was often corrected and dismissed, and while it wouldn’t affect my ability to navigate a classroom, I would hold it back in class nonetheless. Due to all these components, I had …

Adamashlock Art399 Portfolio, Adam R. Ashlock Mr.

Professional Practices (ART 399)

Art is a space where humor and absurdity are welcomed with open arms. It's a way to break down barriers and connect with others—especially when traditional social interactions are challenging. Growing up with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) means I've navigated a world that often feels out of sync with how my brain works. Conversations are challenges, and it’s easy to feel disconnected from the people around me. Humor, however, has always been my in. It's a great way to find common ground and create a shared experience that feels natural even when other forms of connection don’t. Whether through animation …

Zach Alexander Art399 Portfolio, Zachariah M. Alexander

Professional Practices (ART 399)

The work I create theatrically explores my identity through reflections on personal experiences. Each piece is layered with multiple meanings, like the pros and cons of childhood or learning about self-reliance. Across mediums, there are aesthetic choices to convey the accuracy felt in moments of low spirits. There's an eccentric and personal aspect in the pieces that intertwine with my life. The common trait in the work often incorporates movement to convey past emotions. Darker tones create disorientation and confusion, setting the scene and foreshadowing deeper meanings. Some pieces reflect the past and address ongoing issues."Echoes of Childhood" reflects my …

Minimal Wordlist Size For A Phonological Profile: New Evidence From Kra-Dai Languages, Kanyarin Boonkongchuen , '25, Rikker Dockum May 2025

Minimal Wordlist Size For A Phonological Profile: New Evidence From Kra-Dai Languages, Kanyarin Boonkongchuen , '25, Rikker Dockum

Linguistics Faculty Works

This study replicates, and extends to Kra-Dai languages, earlier work on minimal wordlist size needed to make a phonological profile of a language. Previous work on Australian languages recommended approximately 400 randomly sampled words to comprise a minimally complete profile in terms of reliably capturing every phoneme, and with accurate distribution. We survey 55 Kra-Dai languages to show that a longer minimal list is necessary, which we attribute to typological differences like larger consonant/vowel inventories. Given the widespread use of short wordlists in fieldwork, these results hold significance for designing language documentation surveys as well as projects that use legacy …

Nonthermalizing Dynamics Of Interacting Rydberg Atoms, Nicolaus A. Chlanda May 2025

Nonthermalizing Dynamics Of Interacting Rydberg Atoms, Nicolaus A. Chlanda

Physics and Astronomy Honors Papers

An isolated system of ultracold Rydberg atoms can come to equilibrium by exchanging energy through dipole-dipole interactions. In our experiment, a static electric field of a few V/cm shifts the energy levels of the atoms, so that the energy levels are nearly degenerate at zero field and fan out with increasing field to form a manifold. We excite atoms to energy levels near the center of the manifold, where the spacing is nearly harmonic. We allow them to interact for a few microseconds, by which time the population of each energy level has reached a steady state. The population is …

Computational Lipophilicity Calculations Of Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives For Improved Pain Management, Mirabella Romano, Allison Vu, Emily Chen May 2025

Computational Lipophilicity Calculations Of Fluorinated Morphine Derivatives For Improved Pain Management, Mirabella Romano, Allison Vu, Emily Chen

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

The opioid epidemic impacts 60 million people worldwide every year. Morphine, a commonly prescribed opioid, binds to the μ opioid receptor (MOR) in the body via protonation of the tertiary amino group of morphine and the MOR. An unfortunate side effect of this binding process is its non-selectivity in both peripheral and central tissues. While activation within inflamed peripheral tissues results in pain relief, activation within central tissues results in the unwanted and addictive side effects of opioids. Because there is a discrepancy in pH between healthy (central) and inflamed (peripheral) tissue, selective binding within the inflamed tissues results in …

Neighborhood Cohesion And Psychosocial Well-Being: Differences By Race/Ethnicity, Maverick E. Morales May 2025

Neighborhood Cohesion And Psychosocial Well-Being: Differences By Race/Ethnicity, Maverick E. Morales

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Perceived neighborhood cohesion is related to numerous mental health benefits, yet some research suggests racial/ethnic disparities in access to neighborhood cohesion. Much of the existing research investigates only one outcome, limiting the ability to synthesize across findings. The strength of the current study is that it utilized an outcome-wide approach to investigate racial/ethnic differences in associations between perceived neighborhood cohesion and four psychosocial outcomes. Using data from the Health and Retirement Study, we tested the hypotheses that (1) higher perceived neighborhood cohesion would relate to higher life satisfaction and lower anxiety, loneliness, and perceived stress, and that (2) non-Hispanic White …

The Intersection Of Spirituality, Commerce, And Art In The Work Of William Keith, Joan Gallagher May 2025

The Intersection Of Spirituality, Commerce, And Art In The Work Of William Keith, Joan Gallagher

Theses

This thesis examines the nineteenth-century Tonalist artist William Keith, focusing on how he successfully integrated commerce, art, and spirituality to achieve financial success, artistic innovation, and spiritual depth. While scholars often emphasize the symbolism and religiosity in his work, they tend to overlook his financial accomplishments. This study explores Keith's background, religious influences, and artistic development within the cultural, economic, and social context of nineteenth-century America. As a Tonalist, Keith produced popular works for the art market; as a Swedenborgian, his art reflected the spiritual principles of that faith. Unlike his East Coast counterparts, Keith’s California-based landscapes captured the dramatic …

Intervention, Force & Coercion: A Historical Inquiry On The Evolution Of The Prohibition On Intervention, Mohamed S. Helal May 2025

Intervention, Force & Coercion: A Historical Inquiry On The Evolution Of The Prohibition On Intervention, Mohamed S. Helal

International Law Studies

In the Nicaragua Case, the International Court of Justice described coercion as the “very essence of prohibited intervention.” The characterization of coercion as an essential element of non-intervention has become unquestioningly accepted by States and scholars and has dominated debates on how the prohibition on intervention applies in various contexts, including in relation to economic sanctions and cyberoperations. This article challenges the ICJ’s assertion. It does so by retracing the history of the evolution of the prohibition on intervention. It begins by surveying the travaux préparatoires of three Inter-American treaties in which non-intervention was first codified, and then explores the …

The Autocrat's Dilemma: Balancing Loyalty And Competence In Ministerial Appointments Under Threats, Hamed Nikookalamyaghoubi May 2025

The Autocrat's Dilemma: Balancing Loyalty And Competence In Ministerial Appointments Under Threats, Hamed Nikookalamyaghoubi

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Autocratic leaders face a constant challenge in balancing loyalty and competence when appointing ministers. While existing research suggests that autocrats favor loyalty to mitigate threats, this study investigates how they adjust their preferences based on the nature of threats they face. Using several datasets covering 41 autocratic countries from 1980 to 2016, this research applies a two-way fixed effects panel regression to analyze the strategic trade-off between loyalty and competence in cabinet appointments. It argues that autocrats systematically prioritize loyalty over political competence in response to internal threats. In contrast, during external threats, autocrats favor technically competent ministers over loyalty. …

Estradiol Protects Against Pain-Facilitated Fentanyl Use Via Suppression Of Opioid-Evoked Dopamine Activity In Males, Jessica A Higginbotham, Julian G Abt, Rachel H Teich, Joanna J Dearman, Tania Lintz, Jose A Morón

2020-Current year OA Pubs

Pain relief is the most frequently reported motivation for opioid misuse, but it remains unclear how pain alters reward pathway function contributing to maladaptive opioid use and whether these neuroadaptations occur in a sex-specific manner. Here, we show that persistent inflammatory pain leads to augmented fentanyl self-administration in male, not female, rats. Wireless in vivo fiber photometry recordings and chemogenetic manipulations indicate that pain-facilitated fentanyl use is mediated by enhanced ventral tegmental area dopamine (VTA

C. S. Lewis And The Process Of Sanctification: A Literary Analysis Of Till We Have Faces, Samantha Fullmer May 2025

C. S. Lewis And The Process Of Sanctification: A Literary Analysis Of Till We Have Faces, Samantha Fullmer

Student Research

This article analyzes C. S. Lewis’s Till We Have Faces as a mythical representation of the Christian process of sanctification. Through the main character, Orual, and her transformation, Lewis portrays the Christian journey from pride to love through submission to divine intervention. This tale reveals how pride and self-deception can prevent humanity from recognizing the truth of the Divine. Orual’s story illustrates that the barriers between humanity and the Divine often come placed there by humanity themselves. By examining the process of transforming from hubris to love through sanctification, and by comparing this narrative to other works by Lewis, such …
