Empathy And Psychological Outcomes In Informal Caregivers Of Community-Dwelling Older Adults: A Systematic Review And Meta-Analysis, Meng Huo, Thi Vu, Tomiko Yoneda, Jingkai Wei, Bruce Abbott, Joan K Monin

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Objectives: Scholars have increasingly recognized the crucial role that empathy plays as informal caregivers provide unpaid care to their older family and friends (i.e., care recipients). Yet, the existing literature exhibits substantial variability in study approaches and results, which limits the extent to which this literature can inform interventions intended to benefit informal caregivers. We sought to address this critical gap by synthesizing research that examined how caregivers' and care recipients' empathy were associated with caregivers' psychological health.

Methods: We conducted a literature search using PubMed, PsycInfo, CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature), EMBASE, and Scopus databases …

A subset of long-duration spaceflight astronauts at the International Space Station has been documented to develop spaceflight associated neuro-ocular syndrome (SANS). Researchers have sought to understand SANS by quantification of ocular and brain structural changes thought to be associated with weightlessness induced headward fluid shift. Brain tissue shift and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) redistribution has been observed as measured by MRI on return to Earth, and not fully quantified. To improve the understanding of this phenomenon, we developed and applied automated methods to quantify 3D center of mass shift within the skull of the extra-axial cerebrospinal fluid (eaCSF) and brain after …

T cell activation requires a substantial increase in NAD+ production, often exceeding the capacity of oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS). To investigate how T cells adapt to this metabolic challenge, we generate T cell-specific ADP/ATP translocase-2 knockout (Ant2-/-) mice. Loss of Ant2, a crucial protein mediating ADP/ATP exchange between mitochondria and cytoplasm, induces OXPHOS restriction by limiting ATP synthase activity, thereby impeding NAD+ regeneration. Interestingly, Ant2-/- naïve T cells exhibit enhanced activation, proliferation and effector functions compared to wild-type controls. Metabolic profiling reveals that these T cells adopt an activated-like metabolic program with increased mitobiogenesis and anabolism. Lastly, pharmacological inhibition of ANT …

In metastatic clear-cell renal cell carcinoma (mccRCC), choosing between immuno-oncology (IO) combinations and IO plus anti-VEGF therapies is uncertain. The BIONIKK trial revealed that ipilimumab plus nivolumab (Ipi/Nivo) achieved a 70% objective response rate in angiogenic cluster1/2 versus 41% in cluster4/5, which featured T-effector/cell-cycle signatures (p = 0.048). Complete responses were exclusively observed in cluster1/2 (p = 0.012), with longer progression-free survival (p = 0.014). Ipi/Nivo may particularly benefit angiogenic mccRCC, supporting molecular subtype-based treatment strategies.

In recent years, X-ray polarization has opened up a new window into our understanding of astrophysical sources. Among them are accreting stellar-mass black holes, which play a key role in testing the behavior of matter in extreme gravitational environments. These sources can be observed in different states of the accretion cycle, predominantly in the soft and hard states. Every state is dominated by a combination of thermal disk, coronal, or reflected emission—each type containing different information about the environment around the black hole that can be understood through polarization. Polarimeters such as the Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer and XL-Calibur allow …

Disrupting Nrf2-Driven Cancer Biology Through One-Carbon Metabolism Inhibition, Julius Chembo May 2025

Disrupting Nrf2-Driven Cancer Biology Through One-Carbon Metabolism Inhibition, Julius Chembo

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Cancer remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide, with treatment resistance and recurrence posing major barriers to long-term survival. Despite advancements in targeted therapies, many cancers develop resistance to chemotherapy, radiation, and immunotherapy, significantly limiting their effectiveness. One key driver of therapeutic resistance is nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (NFE2L2/NRF2), a transcription factor that regulates antioxidant responses and drug detoxification. While NRF2 protects normal cells from oxidative stress, its aberrant activation in cancer promotes tumor progression, metabolic reprogramming, and resistance to standard treatments. Alarmingly, NRF2 hyperactivation is implicated in some of the most aggressive and refractory malignancies, yet no …

Social Media Addiction Explained Through Film, Matthew Layton

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

“How much is too much?” The central frame of my creative work tackles this question through the lens of queerness, addiction, isolation, and self-identity, giving an unfiltered voice to today’s youth. Social Media’s negative effects go deeper than the usual anecdotes of decline in sleep quality, physical activity, and attention span. The ramifications of a negative mental headspace are often overshadowed by flashy promises and a false sense of belonging. The societal impact is especially influenced due to the malleability of the adolescent brain. In 2022, up to 95% of teenagers ages 13 to 17 claimed to use social media, …

Rewriting The Narrative: The Relationship Between Trauma, Leadership Identity, And Workplace Satisfaction, Bridget A. Hahn May 2025

Rewriting The Narrative: The Relationship Between Trauma, Leadership Identity, And Workplace Satisfaction, Bridget A. Hahn

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Trauma is widely recognized for its devastating psychological effects, yet emerging research suggests that it can also fuel significant personal and professional growth. Most studies examining trauma in a professional context primarily focus on workplace-induced trauma, rather than exploring how personal trauma outside of work or other leadership roles influences an individual’s behavior and abilities within those professional settings. This study examined the relationship between past traumatic experiences, leadership identity, and workplace satisfaction, using the Social Identity Model of Identity Change (SIMIC; Haslam et al., 2021) as a theoretical framework. SIMIC asserts that identity transformation occurs through maintaining or acquiring …

Music And Cognition: How To Keep The Brain On Beat, Rylen Sakamoto

Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters

Music, as the conversion of words and sounds into expressive art, has been often used as a form of catharsis or emotional regulation. While research on common mood outcomes from music exists, further examination is necessary, as this knowledge, once fully understood, can be applied beyond music therapy, and be utilized to enhance our cognitive efficiency. Current research includes Music Mood Theory, which suggests that music has a meaningful impact on our moods, which correlate with behaviors such as maintaining tempo and harmony (Hu, 2010). The purpose of this study was to establish a deeper perspective on the impact music …
