Institutions, Indigenous Peoples, And The Structure Of Power In Columbia River Basin Salmon Governance, Christopher Michael Page May 2025

Institutions, Indigenous Peoples, And The Structure Of Power In Columbia River Basin Salmon Governance, Christopher Michael Page

Dissertations and Theses

As broad patterns of behavior influenced by norms and rules, institutions structure many aspects of modern society through coordination and the distribution of power. Due to the importance of common-pool natural resources to many aspects of society, they usually involve competition and lie at the intersection of multiple institutions. This combination of institutions, power disparities, and a competitive interest is what scholars have referred to as a "field." Fields can be complex, and the coordination among interests is generally done through a form of governance involving a wide array of laws, regulations, and actors. When at least one of these …

Enabling New Synthetic Platforms For Aryne Synthesis With Aryl Thianthrenium Reagents, Riley Augustus Roberts May 2025

Enabling New Synthetic Platforms For Aryne Synthesis With Aryl Thianthrenium Reagents, Riley Augustus Roberts

Dissertations and Theses

The enormous importance of aromatic rings in organic molecules cannot be understated. Aromatic rings are present in the majority of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and consumer products. The way in which these rings are arranged and substituted results in a molecule’s unique properties. Because of this, the current limitations of the chemical methods used to synthesize these molecules results in limited structural diversity and thus missed opportunities for the development of value-added products. To this end, this work demonstrates novel methods of aryne synthesis, aryl thianthrenium synthesis and a unique approach to structural scaffold hopping. The approaches presented herein allow for rapid …

Rootless - The Body Remembers What The Mind Has Forgotten, Helena Omana-Zapata May 2025

Rootless - The Body Remembers What The Mind Has Forgotten, Helena Omana-Zapata

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

In repurposing academic spaces for healing, this project is meant to culminate in an artefact that aligns with decolonial educational practices, focusing on accessibility. In doing so, this project braids multimodality, re-represented history, and testimonio of various genres: personal narrative, Latinx story and resistance, critical examination of history and reproductions of information to depict my experience of detaching from cultural identity through assimilation and acculturation in the United States in education. In what I have called the process of leaving me rootless, I no longer had access to the places, people, identity, or language that established belonging. However, through …

Corporate Climate Risk Governance And Environmental Innovation, Tanvir Hamim, Sabur Mollah May 2025

Corporate Climate Risk Governance And Environmental Innovation, Tanvir Hamim, Sabur Mollah

Management Faculty Publications

The existing body of literature with regard to climate-oriented governance focuses on carbon disclosure and climate change commitments, with a notable omission of an essential aspect of sustainable business practices and decarbonization, that is, environmental innovation. In this study, Hamim and Mollah examine the effect of climate risk governance on firm-level environmental innovation. Based on a panel of 4378 firm-year observations from the nonfinancial S&P 500 components over the period of 2011–2021, they provide novel empirical evidence that corporate climate risk governance is positively associated with environmental innovation. Firms with strong climate risk governance appear to engage more in environment-friendly …

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In Mathematics Instructional Practices For Students With Disabilities, Pendo S. Nyanda May 2025

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy In Mathematics Instructional Practices For Students With Disabilities, Pendo S. Nyanda

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Middle school mathematics special education teachers struggle to integrate culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) into their instructional practices for students with disabilities (SWDs). The purpose of this basic qualitative study was to explore middle school mathematics special education teachers’ understanding of CRP and the support needed to integrate it into mathematics teaching practices. CRP was the conceptual framework for this study, explaining that teaching practices that integrate students’ cultural backgrounds promote their academic success. Two research questions guided the exploration of teachers' understanding of CRP and the support they believe is needed for integrating it. The study collected data through semistructured …

Interest Groups And Intra-Party Conflict On Scored Votes, L. Harbridge-Young, Warren Snead May 2025

Interest Groups And Intra-Party Conflict On Scored Votes, L. Harbridge-Young, Warren Snead

Political Science Faculty Works

While inter-party conflicts and polarization are central for understanding policymaking, salient intra-party conflicts remain. We explore one lens into these conflicts—interest groups scoring votes at odds with party leaders. We examine how often and under what conditions party-aligned interest groups oppose the positions of party leadership and whether this disagreement is associated with heightened intra-party conflict. We find that disagreement is more common for the majority party compared to the minority party and, for both parties, disagreement is associated with reduced voting cohesion. We also identify salient differences between Democrats and Republicans during this time period. Disagreement on scored votes …

Connect 2 Cope: Stress And Coping Strategies Associated With University Honors Students, Anna R. Rodgers

Honors Theses

Coping and connecting are two things that college students don’t take a course in but are essential qualities they will need beyond their time in the university, in both work and life. This research sought to understand how students at Southern Illinois University, with special focus on Honors students, experience stress and view connection as a coping mechanism. It gives insights into sources of stress, including pressures that are external to university life and impact student mental health. The participants included SIUC Honors Students and SIU Non-Honors Students. I was also able to ask each group of students their perceptions …

When Passion Hurts: The Psychological Cost Of Dance, Deborah L. Winer May 2025

When Passion Hurts: The Psychological Cost Of Dance, Deborah L. Winer

Honors College Theses

Dancers’ performance is influenced by factors such as low self-esteem, poor nutrition, lack of sleep, anxiety, and rejection. Personally, when I feel down or do not get enough sleep, my dancing suffers. The vulnerability inherent in dance, coupled with the possibility of praise or rejection, affects emotional well-being, in addition to issues like injuries, sleep deprivation, and disordered eating. Mental health is a significant concern in dance culture, impacting performance. My research focuses on identifying the factors that harm collegiate dancers’ mental health and how to address them for healthier careers. This interest stems from my own struggles throughout my …

Sound Of The Circuit: Ferrari X Spotify’S Sponsorship Strategy To Engage The U.S. Formula 1 Market, Gabrielle Vullings

Honors College Theses

This thesis explores the effectiveness of cross-industry partnerships as a strategic marketing tool through the case study of Spotify and Ferrari Formula 1’s collaboration, Sound of the Circuit. The central research question investigates how such a partnership can expand Formula 1’s reach within the U.S. market, particularly among millennial and Gen Z audiences. With growing interest in Formula 1 driven by cultural phenomena such as Netflix’s Drive to Survive, and the continued dominance of Spotify in youth-centered audio streaming, this thesis examines how these two global brands can align to engage a shared audience and generate mutual commercial value. Using …

Connections, Peter Froehlich May 2025

Connections, Peter Froehlich

LSU Master's Theses

A definitive shift in American social interaction has been taking place far longer than most realize. It is easy to point the finger at the prevalence of technology and social media, this has been a trend that has been going on since the mid to late twentieth century. Stemming from changes in design, the breakdown of scheduled social outlets, and shifts in technology have led to what some writers and sociologists are calling “The Anti-Social Century.”

Working through a making practice to promote the building of connections through social interaction, three different types of spaces were targeted for the exploration …

Resale Revolution: Trend Implications From Media Presence Transcended To Luxury Retail Markets, Penelope Prochnow May 2025

Resale Revolution: Trend Implications From Media Presence Transcended To Luxury Retail Markets, Penelope Prochnow

Capstone Projects

This study aims to deepen understanding of fashion trend decline from peak popularity to obsolescence, with implications for sustainability and producer profit margins. It investigates how the attributes and media presence of fashion items influence their journey from high-end editorial coverage to resale platforms. Using survival analysis to model trend lifetimes and cosine similarity metrics to compare resale and magazine keyword frequencies, alongside machine learning for price prediction, the study uncovers critical temporal patterns. Results show that resale trends reflect magazine content with a lag of approximately 18 to 30 months and draw from long-wave revivals spanning 6 to 14 …

Parts That Cannot Be Found, Amber Baggette May 2025

Parts That Cannot Be Found, Amber Baggette

LSU Master's Theses

Parts That Cannot Be Found is a body of work where I use imagery of trees that are sick or injured, to show my struggles as a person who has been in survival mode their whole life. I use the facts I found in the book “The Hidden Life of Trees,” by Peter Wohlleben, where he describes what trees do and how and why they feel. Since I hold trees in high regard, I started researching how they function. Trees are living beings, and ignoring their presence is tragic. Throughout this paper, I contextualize my work by exploring specific printmaking …

Cross Cultural Mentoring: Including Diversity Awareness Strategies Into Healthcare Leadership Mentor Curriculum To Support Career Advancement Of Underrepresented Racial And Ethnic Groups, Deidra R. Burris

Doctoral Projects

Background: Mentoring programs in healthcare organizations can establish clear pathways for advancement through various management and leadership levels to senior-level positions. While mentoring develops leaders, many healthcare organizations do not offer mentoring programs that address unique issues experienced by members of racially and ethnically underrepresented groups. A study was conducted using a single-group, repeated-measures design to assess the impact of an intervention aimed at improving mentor attitudes, behaviors, and confidence regarding cultural awareness in the mentoring relationships of healthcare leaders. Methods: The study was conducted in a large California healthcare organization. The Cultural Diversity Awareness related to Race/Ethnicity (CDA-R/E) subscales …

Blast injuries and subclinical effects are of significant concern among those Service Members (SMs) participating in military operations and tactical trainings. Studies of SMs repeatedly exposed during training find concussion-like symptomology with transient decrements in neurocognitive performance, and alterations in blood biomarkers. How prior mild TBI (mTBI) history interacts with low-level blast (LLB) exposure, however, remains unexplored, which we investigate in the present study, to identify interindividual biomarker changes from LLB exposures influenced by prior history of mTBI.
