Assessing The Kinematics And Kinetics About The Knee With An Isokinetic Dynamometer And Force Plates During Field-Based And Lab-Based Trials., Samantha Ann Searles

Theses and Dissertations

The incidence rate in knee injuries has increased over the last 20 years, with women at a 2-8 times higher incidence rate compared to men. This is likely a result of lower neuromuscular control of the trunk, generating less hip muscle activation, and more reliance on the quadriceps, alongside reduced hip, knee, and dorsiflexion angles, paired with increased knee valgus angles, ground reaction forces (GRF), hip adduction, and knee rotation upon landing from jumps. The focus of this study is to determine if knee kinetics and kinematics during field- and lab-based trials are associated with knee injury predictors. Theoretically, if …

Costs And Challenges In The Mississippi Log Trucking Industry, James Tucker Shannon May 2025

Costs And Challenges In The Mississippi Log Trucking Industry, James Tucker Shannon

Theses and Dissertations

Challenges impacting Mississippi log trucking businesses include escalating production costs, labor shortages, aging ownership, and rising liability insurance premiums. These concerns are transmitted back to loggers, landowners, and the entire forest products industry, reducing their contributions to the state’s economy. Lack of current knowledge concerning the adaptation of Mississippi log trucking companies under adverse business conditions necessitated a statewide mixed-mode survey to determine the industry’s structure, the nature of liability insurance premiums, and business owner perceptions about driver hiring and profitability. Mississippi log trucking business owners and drivers were predominantly middle-aged, with fewer individuals under the age of 40. Log …

Impact Of Fertilizer Timing And Cover Crop Establishment Methods On Bedded Soybean Cropping Systems In Mississippi, Grant Madison Shavers May 2025

Impact Of Fertilizer Timing And Cover Crop Establishment Methods On Bedded Soybean Cropping Systems In Mississippi, Grant Madison Shavers

Theses and Dissertations

Mississippi’s agriculture faces challenges from high rainfall, bedded cropping systems, and varying soil testing methods. Many producers apply phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and sulfur (S) in the fall to reduce spring workload and rain-related delays. While fall fertilization raises concerns about yield losses, research indicates minimal differences in soybean (Glycine max L.) yield between fall and spring applications. Raised beds also limit cover crop (CC) establishment despite their potential benefits. We explored strategies to integrate CCs into bedded systems while assessing bed stability and residue management during soybean production. Additionally, Mississippi’s use of two soil nutrient extraction methods highlights the …

Projected Future Reservoir Impairment In The Conterminous United States Following Three Climate Change Scenarios, Darren James Shoemaker May 2025

Projected Future Reservoir Impairment In The Conterminous United States Following Three Climate Change Scenarios, Darren James Shoemaker

Theses and Dissertations

Anthropogenic climate change has been associated with reservoir aging and reduced ecosystem function. Communities throughout the world depend on reservoirs for services such as hydropower, drinking water, flood mitigation, and recreational opportunities. Though reservoirs were typically constructed to meet human needs, they are now also acknowledged as supporting biodiverse aquatic communities. Reservoir managers are expected to maintain services and biodiversity demanded by diverse users despite high uncertainty surrounding how climate will influence reservoirs through time. Additionally, data describing reservoir function at broad spatial extents are often either unavailable, incompatible between agencies, or prohibitively resource-intensive to obtain. Expert opinion surveys are …

An Updated Viscoplastic Self-Consistent Model To Capture The Effects Of Residual Stress, Microstructural Heterogeneity, And Precipitation In Cold-Sprayed Aluminum Alloys, Aulora Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Cold spray additively manufactured (CSAM) aluminum alloys exhibit heterogenous microstructures and mechanical properties, primarily due to high dislocation densities, sub-grain structures, and variation in inter-particle (intersplat) bonding arising from high-velocity particle impacts. Thermal post-processing has been shown to enhance intersplat bonding, reduce high residual stress concentrations, and lower dislocation densities, thereby improving the overall mechanical properties. Building on previous advancements with a mean-field viscoplastic self-consistent (VPSC) model, integrating intersplat boundary terms, Hall-Petch relations, and physically informed residual stress parameters, the current work extends the model to include precipitates and their effects. Observations of CSAM aluminum 7050 alloy indicate precipitate congregation …

Roles Of Class Iii Phosphatidylinositol 3-Kinase, Vps34, In Phagocytosis, Autophagy, And Endocytosis In Retinal Pigmented Epithelium, Feng He, Ralph M Nichols, Melina A Agosto, Theodore G Wensel

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Phosphatidylinositol-3-phosphate (PI(3)P) is important for multiple functions of retinal pigmented epithelial (RPE) cells, but its functions in RPE have not been studied. In RPE from mouse eyes and in cultured human RPE cells, PI(3)P-enriched membranes include endosomes, the trans-Golgi network, phagosomes, and autophagophores. Mouse RPE cells lacking activity of the PI-3 kinase, Vps34, lack detectable PI(3)P and die prematurely. Phagosomes containing rod discs accumulate, as do membrane aggregates positive for autophagosome markers. These autophagy-related membranes recruit LC3/Atg8 without Vps34, but phagosomes do not. Vps34 loss leads to accumulation of lysosomes which do not fuse with phagosomes or membranes with …

Ditmas Flats, Llc V. Perez May 2025

Ditmas Flats, Llc V. Perez

All Decisions

The Appellate Term reversed a Civil Court order that dismissed the landlord's illegal sublet claim and denied its motion to dismiss the tenant's affirmative defenses. The court held that the predicate notices, though not naming the alleged subtenant, were sufficiently reasonable to establish grounds for eviction and enable the tenant to frame a defense, reinstating the illegal sublet claim. The nonprimary residence claim was properly dismissed due to the landlord's failure to serve a statutory nonrenewal notice. The matter was remitted to the Civil Court to determine the merits of the landlord's motion to dismiss the tenant's affirmative defenses.

Tuesdai Family Irrevocable Living Trust V. Denver May 2025

Tuesdai Family Irrevocable Living Trust V. Denver

All Decisions

The landlord obtained a default judgment in a nonpayment proceeding. A tenant moved to vacate the default, claiming improper service, which the Civil Court rejected. However, the Civil Court, without finding a reasonable excuse for the default, vacated the judgment and sua sponte dismissed the petition based on the merits. The Appellate Term, Second Department, reversed, holding that vacating a default judgment under CPLR 5015(a)(1) requires both a reasonable excuse for the default and a meritorious defense. The Civil Court's failure to find a reasonable excuse rendered its vacatur an improvident exercise of discretion. The Appellate Term reinstated the default …

The Organizing Role Of Function Knowledge In Scene Schemas, Teresa P. Pham May 2025

The Organizing Role Of Function Knowledge In Scene Schemas, Teresa P. Pham

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Schemata, or schemas, are conceptualized as “building blocks” of cognition that guide human information processing, object recognition, retrieval of memory, and more. Major work on schema theory was done in the 1970s, conceptualizing it as a useful framework for understanding how individuals organize knowledge and apply it to understand the world (e.g., Rumelhart, 1980). Research on schema theory has continued to have implications for reading comprehension, visual processing, and encoding and retrieval of memories. Despite the vast literature, the concept of schema itself remains loosely defined, with little consensus on how schemas are organized. This study explores whether function acts …

2020-Current year OA Pubs

BACKGROUND: Evidence-based intervention (EBI) sustainment is one of public health's largest translational research problems. Fewer than half of public health EBIs are sustained long-term, and sustainment challenges are even more pressing in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Organizational characteristics, including organizations' inner structures, culture, and climate, may play a key role in EBI sustainment. However, little quantitative research has examined these relationships, particularly in LMICs.

METHODS: In this observational study, we assessed the association between baseline organizational characteristics and EBI sustainment within a cluster randomized implementation trial in Vietnam testing strategies to scale-up Systems Navigation and Psychosocial Counseling (SNaP) for …
