Poly(2-Methyl 1-Pentene Sulfone) (Pmps) As A Potential Oxidation Retardant For Aluminum Mirrors For Space Telescopes, Kira Sand, Matthew Clarkson, Morgan Peterson, David Allred May 2025

Poly(2-Methyl 1-Pentene Sulfone) (Pmps) As A Potential Oxidation Retardant For Aluminum Mirrors For Space Telescopes, Kira Sand, Matthew Clarkson, Morgan Peterson, David Allred

Utah Space Grant Consortium

The reflectivity of aluminum mirrors, essential for capturing high-quality far-ultraviolet (FUV) images in space telescopes, is compromised by oxidation caused by exposure to Earth's atmosphere. Barrier coatings like magnesium fluoride can protect aluminum but still permit slow oxidation over time. To address this, we propose using photodegrading polymer films, which depolymerize under UV light in a vacuum, as a protective coating for aluminum mirrors until they exit Earth's atmosphere. Our research focuses on Poly(2-methyl 1-pentene sulfone) (PMPS), which depolymerize when exposed to ultraviolet light in vacuum, ensuring stability until reaching space.

Mapping Accretion Around The Black Hole X-Ray Binary Maxi J1803-298 With Reflection, Brianna Searle, Benjamin Coughenour

Utah Space Grant Consortium

MAXI J1803-298 is a recently discovered transient black hole (BH) X-ray binary that went into outburst on May 1st, 2021, and was detected with MAXI/GSC1 onboard the ISS. NuSTAR observed MAXI J1803-298 four times during its outburst (see Table 1, Figure 1)2,3. I modeled the spectrum to see reflection features and learn about the inner accretion disk and the environment around the BH. Figure 1 and Table 1 show that the outburst started roughly on May 1st, the peak was on May 14th, and the last observation was on June 17th.

Increasing Rocket Reusability Via Guided Recovery Systems, Chandler Taylor May 2025

Increasing Rocket Reusability Via Guided Recovery Systems, Chandler Taylor

Utah Space Grant Consortium

As rocketry continues to emphasize reusability and cost-effectiveness, the question arises: how can these goals be achieved in the context of sounding rockets? One promising method is the use of air brakes. These systems can serve multiple purposes, such as assisting in stage separation or guiding a rocket safely back to the ground. Much of the recent air brake testing has taken place at events like the Intercollegiate Rocket Engineering Competition (IREC), often to meet specific altitude targets. But this paper aims to use air brakes to increase the rockets recoverability and reusability by employing air brake gird fins to …

High-Velocity Pulsar Kicks Via Anisotropic Neutrino Emission, Tate R. Thomas, Alexander M. Panin May 2025

High-Velocity Pulsar Kicks Via Anisotropic Neutrino Emission, Tate R. Thomas, Alexander M. Panin

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Observations reveal that some neutron stars (NS) exhibit high velocities, reaching over 1000 km/s in some instances. This cannot be attributed to the orbital velocity of the NS around our Milky Way galaxy, as it is around 250 km/s on average. The origin of this phenomenon, known as a pulsar kick, is not fully understood and remains a subject of debate among astrophysicists.

During NS formation, the rotation and strong (potentially asymmetric) magnetic field of its progenitor star may result in an asymmetric collapse of the star's core plasma. If this is the case, we might anticipate the formation of …

Increased Angle Space For A Fourier Scatter Microscope Via Simultaneous Axial And Off-Axis Imaging, Haley Blackburn, Marren Williams, Vincent M. Rossi

Utah Space Grant Consortium

Fourier Scatter Imaging (FSI) has proven to be an innovative tool for measuring particle size. This research incorporates Fourier optics into a scatter imaging system with the addition of an off-axis pathway in a Fourier Scatter Microscope. The system uses 0.28 numerical aperture (NA) long working distance objectives that provide angular resolution over +/- 16.3° in the forward direction and 90° +/- 16.3° in the off-axis direction. This setup enables simultaneous capture of axial and off-axis scatter signals using a shared camera, significantly enhancing the angular scattering measurement capabilities. This proof-of-principle system demonstrates the potential for improvements in scattering image …

The Challenge Of Crafting And Maintaining Democracy In Zimbabwe And South Africa, Robert W. Compton Jr. May 2025

The Challenge Of Crafting And Maintaining Democracy In Zimbabwe And South Africa, Robert W. Compton Jr.

Journal of African Policy Studies

This paper examines the impact of land reform policies on the political development of South Africa and Zimbabwe. In particular, it focuses on the past policy approaches to land reform, principally the "willing seller and able buyer" market approach in the context of past injustices involving land reform. The politics of land reform and the inability of the hegemonic parties in South Africa and Zimbabwe, the African national Congress (ANC) and Zimbabwe African National Union (ZANU) respectively, to implement satisfactory policy contributes to negative political and economic consequences for both countries. Simultaneously, opposition parties in both countries, in particular the …

The Future Of Monetary Integration In Southern Africa: Lessons From The European Union?, Richard Dutu, Donald L. Sparks May 2025

The Future Of Monetary Integration In Southern Africa: Lessons From The European Union?, Richard Dutu, Donald L. Sparks

Journal of African Policy Studies

The 14-member Southern African Development Community (SADC) has a long-term goal of becoming a full common market. A major component of fuller integration would be a common currency arrangement. The states of southern Africa, however, face a dilemma: While the region already sustains a successful and long-running monetary union, the Common Monetary Area (CMA, known as the "Rand Zone"), the region's leading economic integration organization, the SADC, is opposed to joining the union.

The Common Market for East and Southern Africa (COMESA)—a less successful, but rival economic organization—favors, for its part, a monetary union. Is the SADC ready for monetary …

Smes In Developing Countries And The Problem Of Exporting: Market Entry Costs, Exchange Rate Shocks And The Capital Structure Of Firms, Trond-Arne Borgersen May 2025

Smes In Developing Countries And The Problem Of Exporting: Market Entry Costs, Exchange Rate Shocks And The Capital Structure Of Firms, Trond-Arne Borgersen

Journal of African Policy Studies

This paper integrates a sunk-cost model of foreign trade with a discussion on the capital structure of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries. A model of foreign trade where firms have to incur irrecoverable market entry costs in international markets is presented. As a result of the market entry costs the foreign trade structure is non-linear. This non-linearity complicates the relationship between foreign trade flows and exchange rates, compared to the predictions of conventional foreign trade theory. Both the entry and the operating decision are affected, as the non-linearity puts pressure on the capital structure of firms. In …
