Taking Flight: Utilizing Unmanned Aerial Systems To Sample Insects In Soybean, William "Covey" Lockhart
Taking Flight: Utilizing Unmanned Aerial Systems To Sample Insects In Soybean, William "Covey" Lockhart
Theses and Dissertations
Insect scouting in soybean is a labor-intensive task but is needed throughout the season to minimize losses. When soybeans are tall, soils are wet, or soybeans are planted in narrow rows, walking through these fields can be difficult. To overcome these limitations of manual sampling, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) sampling platform was developed that can collect insects in a sweep net attached to the bottom of a UAV. This system has been named the “Drone Insect Net Sampling System” (DINSS). Previous research with this system has shown positive correlations to traditional manual sampling methods. To improve this system, modifications …
Impact Of Circular And Non-Circular Nozzle Exit Geometries On Jet Flow Propagation And Turbulence Characteristics, Hiba Maazioui
Impact Of Circular And Non-Circular Nozzle Exit Geometries On Jet Flow Propagation And Turbulence Characteristics, Hiba Maazioui
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis aims to investigate the impact of nozzle exit geometry on jet flow propagation and turbulence characteristics. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were performed using ANSYS Fluent, employing the Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) approach, to compare circular, elliptic, and rectangular nozzle geometries. The analysis focused on velocity distributions, turbulence characteristics, and cross-flow interactions. Results indicate that circular jets have the longest potential core and slowest velocity decay, reflecting lower mixing rates. In contrast, elliptic and rectangular jets have shorter potential cores, faster velocity decay, and elevated TKE peaks, suggesting enhanced turbulence and mixing. These findings highlight the significant role of nozzle …

Advancing Wood Chip Moisture Content Prediction Using Advanced Generative Ai Techniques, Daniel Esteban Marulanda
Theses and Dissertations
In this study we propose a deep learning method to optimize the classification of wood chip moisture content levels using the Vision Transformer and then ultimately increase the classification performance by creating synthetic images using the diffusion transformer model. In the first chapter of our study, we complete a detailed explanation of how the moisture content levels of 10 different wood chips were gathered ranging from 2 to 50$\%$. This chapter serves as a foundation for subsequent sections, illustrating the challenges associated with the current data collection process, which is both time-consuming and inefficient. Accurately determining moisture content for wood …

A Rapid Artificial Neural Network Interatomic Potential For Bismuth, Lee Michael Mayfield Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
To study molecular dynamics in bismuth, Quantum Espresso was used to create a density functional theory (DFT) database which was then used as the input for rapid artificial neural network (RANN). The RANN interatomic potential that was developed using this database was then validated. Large-scale Atomic/Molecular Massively Parallel Simulator (LAMMPS) was used to create simulations and gather data using the RANN potential. The properties of bismuth, including elastic constants, melting points, and volume change, were calculated and compared to DFT and experimentally observed data. The RANN potential coincided well with these values. The RANN potential shows good predictive capabilities for …

From Tree Rings To Streamflow: Reconstructing The Hydroclimatic History Of The Mississippi River Basin Over The Past Millennia, Brandon Mcdaniel
Theses and Dissertations
The Mississippi River Basin (MRB), the largest watershed in the United States, plays a central role in shaping regional hydroclimate. This study reconstructs streamflow variability in the MRB from the year 1200 to 2005 by applying principal component regression to streamflow data from 51 gauges and the North American Drought Atlas (NADA), a tree-ring-based reconstruction of the summer self-calibrating Palmer Drought Severity Index. Verification statistics indicated strong predictive skill across the domain. These findings provide critical insight into long-term hydroclimatic variability in the MRB and underscore the value of paleoclimate records for improving water resource assessments.

Evaluating The Use Of Translucency Score As An Effective Parameter Of Eggshell Quality, Cassidy Autumn Morris
Evaluating The Use Of Translucency Score As An Effective Parameter Of Eggshell Quality, Cassidy Autumn Morris
Theses and Dissertations
The objective of this thesis was to determine if an egg’s translucency score (TS) could be used as an effective predicting parameter to determine eggshell quality in both broiler breeders and commercial laying hens. In broiler breeders, it was determined that TS could be used as an effective predicting parameter for eggshell thickness (P< 0.001) and L* scores (P< 0.001). It was also found that the supplementation of organically sourced trace minerals could significantly decrease the TS of eggs, resulting in a better-quality eggshell (P< 0.001). In two different aged commercial laying hen experiments, there was no conclusive evidence for TS to be a predictive parameter of eggshell quality throughout the storage period. It was found, however, that the storage period did significantly increase the TS throughout storage in both experiments (P< 0.001).

The Role Of Enso Diversity In Modulating Tornadic Activity In The United States, Davis Boyd Newton
The Role Of Enso Diversity In Modulating Tornadic Activity In The United States, Davis Boyd Newton
Theses and Dissertations
Tornado activity in the United States is influenced by large-scale climate patterns, especially by the El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). While prior research has explored ENSO’s impact on severe weather, the influence of ENSO flavors, Central Pacific (CP) and Eastern Pacific (EP), on tornadic activity remains understudied. Using tornado records, reanalysis data, and sea surface temperature anomalies, we assess how convective available potential energy (CAPE), wind shear, and jet stream dynamics influence tornado frequency and distribution. Results indicate that CP La Niña years had significant increases in tornado frequency, particularly across the Midwest, Central Plains, and Southeast. EP ENSO years had …

Counter-drone systems employ sensors such as radars and cameras to detect, track, and identify drones. These systems can confuse birds with drones, and the advent of bird-like drones exacerbates this problem. This thesis explores radar micro-Doppler, camera imagery, and their fusion for drone and bird classification. First, micro-Doppler models of quadcopters, birds, and bird-like drones were developed to generate a dataset of synthetic spectrograms for training support vector machine, k-nearest neighbors, Naïve Bayes, and convolutional neural network (CNN) classifiers. Second, transfer learning was applied on YOLOv10, a recently developed You Only Look Once object detector model, to detect and classify …
Earth Analogue Analysis Of Volcanic/Tectonic Interactions With Applications To Venusian Stresses, Michael Ortigoza
Earth Analogue Analysis Of Volcanic/Tectonic Interactions With Applications To Venusian Stresses, Michael Ortigoza
Theses and Dissertations
Venus shares many geological similarities with Earth, yet its tectonic processes and magma injection mechanisms remain poorly understood. A key question in planetary geology is how effusive volcanism persists despite the intense horizontal compression terrestrial bodies experience over time. To explore these issues, we examine the Spanish Peaks dike swarm in Colorado which serves as an ideal site for investigating magma intrusion under compressive stress conditions. Through field mapping, orientation measurements, and structural analysis, we identify a strong relationship between pre-existing joints and dike orientations, suggesting that these fractures serve as critical magma pathways in compressive regimes. Additionally, evidence of …

A disconnect exists between statewide accountability systems and college and career readiness (CCR) outcomes measured by the ACT and SAT. The goal of a statewide accountability system is to enable, implement, and support success for all students in areas that demonstrate high academic achievement through federal- and state-mandated metrics. Under the Every Student Succeeds Act (2015), states have been granted flexibility in how to measure CCR via a number of School Quality and Student Success (SQSS) indicators. Through a quantitative correlational design, data were collected from 44 states with ACT and SAT participation rates ≥ 90%, ≤ 10% or closest …
Projected Future Reservoir Impairment In The Conterminous United States Following Three Climate Change Scenarios, Darren James Shoemaker
Projected Future Reservoir Impairment In The Conterminous United States Following Three Climate Change Scenarios, Darren James Shoemaker
Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic climate change has been associated with reservoir aging and reduced ecosystem function. Communities throughout the world depend on reservoirs for services such as hydropower, drinking water, flood mitigation, and recreational opportunities. Though reservoirs were typically constructed to meet human needs, they are now also acknowledged as supporting biodiverse aquatic communities. Reservoir managers are expected to maintain services and biodiversity demanded by diverse users despite high uncertainty surrounding how climate will influence reservoirs through time. Additionally, data describing reservoir function at broad spatial extents are often either unavailable, incompatible between agencies, or prohibitively resource-intensive to obtain. Expert opinion surveys are …

Predicting air passenger volumes is crucial for airports and airlines seeking to reduce costs and enhance profitability. Accurate forecasting enables better planning and efficiency improvements within the air transport industry. This study applies LSTM, ARIMA and HW to U.S. air passenger datasets. Each analysis shows a methodology for predicting air passenger volumes across airports, airlines and across airports and airlines simultaneously. ARIMA was found to have limited applicability, since only a subset of the datasets was stationary. LSTM and HW were applicable to all airlines and ARIMA was applicable to no airlines. LSTM had less error compared to HW at …
