In this research, an interdigitated gear-shaped working electrode is presented for cortisol sensing. Overall, the sensor was designed in a three-electrode system and was fabricated using direct laser scribing. A synthesized conductive ink based on graphene and polyaniline was further employed to enhance the electrochemical performance of the sensor. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy were employed for physicochemical characterization of the laser-induced graphene (LIG) sensor. Cortisol, a biomarker essential in detecting stress, was detected both in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS, pH = 7.4) and human serum within a linear range of 100 ng/mL to 100 µg/mL. …

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common neurodevelopmental disorder in children, characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) endorses stimulant medications as the first-line treatment option. When combined with behavioral therapy, this pharmacologic class can improve focus, executive functioning, and the overall quality of life. While stimulant prescriptions can have a positive effect when used as directed, there is concern for the potential of provider overprescription and patient misuse related to these medications. Detailed social determinants of health (SDoH) is often buried within clinical text in EHRs. Most current NLP efforts for SDoH have limitations, investigating limited factors, deriving data from a single institution, using specific patient cohorts/note types, with reduced focus on generalizability. We aim to address these issues by creating cross-institutional corpora and developing and evaluating the generalizability of classification models, including large language models (LLMs), for detecting SDoH factors using data from four institutions. E-cigarette or vaping product use-associated lung injury (EVALI) is a critical and potentially fatal form of lung injury that gained considerable public health concern in 2019. The use of e-cigarettes and vaping products is causally associated with EVALI, a condition characterized by a constellation of respiratory symptoms, such as coughing, shortness of breath, and chest pain. Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a prevalent metabolic disorder with significant health and economic impacts. This review examined Middle Eastern herbs as alternative T2DM treatments in human randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses. A comprehensive PubMed search was conducted for human randomised controlled trials and meta-analyses on black seed (Nigella sativa), fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum), ginger (Zingiber officinale), cinnamon (Cinnamomum cassia) and curcumin (Curcuma longa), with at least 6 human studies per herb. Although pathological complete response (pCR) and major pathological response (MPR) rates of neoadjuvant immunotherapy combined with chemotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) trials remain suboptimal, emerging evidence highlights the synergistic potential of combining low-dose radiotherapy with immunotherapy to promote the efficacy of immunotherapy. This phase II, open-label, single-arm, multicenter trial (NCT05343325) enrolled 28 patients with untreated stage III-IVB HNSCC (NeoRTPC02). Patients received neoadjuvant low-dose radiotherapy, the programmed death-1 (PD-1) inhibitor tislelizumab, albumin-bound paclitaxel, and cisplatin for two cycles, followed by radical resection ~4 weeks after treatment completion. This study examines the policy of raising subsidized fuel prices in Indonesia through a dramaturgical lens, employing discourse analysis as its methodology. Each fuel price increase triggers intense political debates, involving key governmental figures and eliciting diverse public responses. The research contrasts two pivotal periods: the policy decisions during President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's administration in 2013 and those under President Joko Widodo in 2022. Using a dramaturgical framework, the study analyzes the dimensions of scripting, setting, staging, and performance in policymaking, highlighting how each administration constructs distinct policy narratives. A peptide called spexin (SPX) regulates blood glucose and lipid metabolism. The study primarily focused on the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) in postmenopausal women, examining its relationship with serum SPX levels. A case-control study involved 180 postmenopausal women from Thi-Qar, Iraq were enrolled in the current study. Ninety women were recently diagnosed with diabetic postmenopausal women, while the other 90 were non-diabetic postmenopausal women. In this paper, we synthesized some new substituted pyridilimides in three different ways. Firstly, by the reaction of 2-carboxy nicotinic acid with some amino acids to form 2-substituted (5,7-dioxo-5,7-dihydro-6H-pyrrolo [3,4-b] pyridine-6-yl) acetic acid (1–2). In the next step, the resultant compounds were treated with phenylene diamine to form substituted 6-((1H-benzo[d]imidazol-2-yl) methyl)-5H-pyrrolo [3,4-b] pyridine-5,7(6H)-dione (3-4). Secondly, 2-carboxy nicotinic acid, which was converted to anhydride (5), reacted with acetic anhydride and acetic acid. This dissertation explores why some regions--despite facing similar economic, geographic, and environmental constraints--have successfully developed renewable energy systems while others have struggled. Improved thermal insulation can reduce much of this consumption with positive implications for energy security and economic opportunity. For over 25 years vacuum insulation panels (VIPs) have been considered a highly promising thermal insulation solution for building envelopes. VIPs can potentially provide an order of magnitude greater insulative performance than common insulation materials with the same thickness. The purpose of this master’s project is to complete a modal analysis of the Joseph E. Usibelli Engineering Learning and Innovation Building. The modal analysis was conducted in two ways: by completing a spectral analysis using data collected from 7 seismometers and using a computer model of the building’s structural Lateral Force Resisting System. This project experimentally investigates the effectiveness of tetrahedral lattice porous plates for passive thermal management of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) batteries. The evaluation utilized a small unmanned aircraft system (sUAS) to conduct demonstrations under both hot and cold climate conditions, assessing the plates’ performance in regulating battery temperatures. Findings indicated that the tetrahedral lattice structure effectively mitigated thermal fluctuations, thereby enhancing battery stability and longevity during operation. The successful demonstration of these plates provides promising evidence for their application in thermal management systems for UAS batteries. Collective action has great importance in solving many socio-ecological issues because the sustainable management of natural resources requires that different people and institutions cooperate with one another to contribute to a collective good. Over the past sixty years, two general theories of collective action have formed. These theories continue to influence debates about what factors drive collective action. In the 1960s, first-generation collective action scholars proposed that laws from centralized governments or privatization were needed to combat collective action problems such as overpopulation and overexploitation of resources. Laminin B1 (LAMB1) is one of the extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins that make up the basement membrane. Early frameshift, late frameshift, and missense variants in LAMB1 have been reported to cause rare monogenic neurological disorders that are collectively known as LAMB1-related leukoencephalopathy. Although there is some genotype-phenotype correlation, functional consequences of pathogenic LAMB1 variants are largely unknown. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) are a method of calculating genetic risk for polygenic, or multi-gene, disorders. These scores have potential impacts in the realm of child and adolescent psychiatry, given the high prevalence of psychiatric disorders among youth. However, there are concerns about PRS implementation among key stakeholders, namely child and adolescent psychiatrists (CAP). We conducted interviews with 29 U.S.-based CAP to investigate clinician attitudes toward the use of PRS. This research investigates the institutional constraints shaping the adoption of AI-assisted proposal evaluation in federal ICT procurement, using U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) as a case study. Although AI tools are increasingly used by contractors to generate proposals, their integration into government evaluation processes remain limited. Using institutional theory as an analytical framework, this study examines how regulative rules, normative expectations, and cognitive assumptions jointly reinforce a risk-averse procurement culture that inhibits automation. Polar ice cores show that atmospheric methane concentrations nearly doubled in response to rapid climate warming over the last deglacial transition. Since concentrations of this potent greenhouse gas are tightly coupled to the Earth’s climate system, understanding the climate­ ecosystem interactions that precipitated this event may help predict feedbacks to current and future warming. This work reconstructs panarctic lake areas and methane emissions to assess their contribution to global atmospheric methane budgets since the Last Glacial Maximum. Harmful Algal Blooms (HAB) consist of a myriad of phytoplankton that can produce multiple potentially lethal biotoxins, which are ingested by shellfish as they consume algae in their diet. HAB events can occur when sunlight, nutrients, temperature, and turbidity conditions combine optimally. These bloom events are expected to increase as ocean temperatures continue to rise. Trauma-informed education is gaining momentum in higher education as a framework that seeks to create learning environments that are safe, inclusive, and responsive to the emotional and psychological needs of students—particularly those who have experienced trauma. This qualitative study, situated at the American University in Cairo (AUC), explores how faculty perceive, understand, and implement trauma-informed practices in a diverse university context that includes refugee and displaced students.
