Risky Business For The Almighty Roi: Alternative Assets In Higher Education Endowments, Clayton Ellis May 2025

Risky Business For The Almighty Roi: Alternative Assets In Higher Education Endowments, Clayton Ellis

Education Policy and Leadership Theses and Dissertations

Higher education institutions (HEI) are heavily reliant on alternative revenue streams to mitigate rising operational costs. One alternative revenue source is the endowment, an aggegation of assets invested to support the institutional objectives of an HEI through generated income. Before the 21st century, institutions have typically sought after more conservative investment strategies via traditional asset classes like bonds and equities. The growing financial obligations to educate students has led endowment managers to make a shift in their investment strategies towards alternative assets classes – private equity, venture capital, secondaries – in order to gain advantage in generating alpha (α) …

Nonlinear Phenomena Of Discrete Wave Systems With Nonlocal Coupling, Austin E. Marstaller May 2025

Nonlinear Phenomena Of Discrete Wave Systems With Nonlocal Coupling, Austin E. Marstaller

Mathematics Theses and Dissertations

There is a long and rich story of nonlinear dynamics in discrete lattices. A particular well studied model is the discrete Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation, with many applications, most notably in nonlinear optics.

Recent studies have explored dynamics in scenarios where coupling amongst the array elements is nonlocal. The interest in particular is that in the longwave approximation, it leads to fractional diffraction. In this contribution, we consider two long range interaction lattice wave models, the fractional discrete nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation and the Long Range Ablowitz-Ladik system. By use of perturbation methods, asymptotics and numerical simulations, we present results on modulational …

Data Encoding, Compilation, And Algorithms For Quantum Machine Learning, Aviraj Sinha

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

Quantum computing enables new approaches to data processing, especially in quantum machine learning. Unlike classical systems, quantum data must be synthesized through operations and can exist in superposition. Encoding choices affect efficiency, noise resilience, and trainability—key factors in quantum machine learning models. This dissertation enhances quantum data encodings by extending quantum read-only memory (QROM) beyond binary representations, improving efficiency and parallelism. It introduces new compilation methods for quantum random number generators (QRNGs), supporting non-parametric distributions for post-quantum cryptography. Additionally, it explores Cayley graph-based encodings to extract spectral features for quantum machine learning.

Hybrid Graph-Recurrent Architecture For Citation Recommendation Via Future Embedding Forecasting, Mohammad Ausaf Ali Haqqani

Computer Science and Engineering Theses and Dissertations

The rapid expansion of scientific literature has intensified the challenge of identifying relevant citations, particularly for newly published or under-cited papers. Traditional citation recommendation systems typically model static relationships or respond to past citation activity, offering limited predictive power for emerging works. In response, this thesis presents a temporal modeling framework for citation recommendation that anticipates future scholarly relevance by forecasting the latent representations of academic papers.

Building on prior work that utilized Temporal Graph Networks (TGNs) to model dynamic citation flows, we propose Graph-Time, a hybrid architecture that integrates a Graph Transformer with a GRU-based time series predictor. The …

Computational Identification Of Infiltrating T Lymphocytes Into Solid Tumor, Lin Zhong May 2025

Computational Identification Of Infiltrating T Lymphocytes Into Solid Tumor, Lin Zhong

Statistical Science Theses and Dissertations

T cells play a central role in cancer immunity. Successful anti-tumor immunotherapy relies on the effective infiltration of cytotoxic T cells. However, the tumor microenvironment presents physical and immunosuppressive barriers to prevent T cell entry. Here, we developed two novel computational tools, ReMITT and SIBERT, to search for migrating T cells and T cell entry regions (TERs) into the tumor core. SIBERT combines a novel change point detection method and a spatial imputation model to detect regions with signatures of recent T cell entry using the spatial transcriptomics data. Applying SIBERT to multiple human cancer samples revealed several TERs for …

Rethinking Resource Exploitation: Shared Capitalist Motivations In Ghana’S Gold Mining Sector, Benedicta Donkor May 2025

Rethinking Resource Exploitation: Shared Capitalist Motivations In Ghana’S Gold Mining Sector, Benedicta Donkor

Senior Theses

The relationship between Chinese involvement in Ghana's gold mining sector and its impact on sovereignty, development, and resource governance has ignited significant debate. While neo-colonial frameworks often dominate discussions, this thesis argues that such perspectives oversimplify the complex dynamics at play. Instead, Chinese involvement is better understood as mutual capitalist exploitation, where both Chinese and Ghanaian actors are driven by shared profit motives within a global capitalist system. This mutual exploitation is enabled by weak governance, regulatory gaps, and systemic corruption, creating a permissive environment for resource exploitation at the expense of societal and environmental well-being. The thesis critically examines …

Not Just Another 2000 Word Written Mfa Thesis, Taylor Cleveland May 2025

Not Just Another 2000 Word Written Mfa Thesis, Taylor Cleveland

Art Theses and Dissertations

This thesis challenges the standardized academic expectations placed upon studio-based MFA programs, using the process of writing itself as a site of institutional critique. Emerging from a 27,000-word working draft titled Aesthetics of Real, this final text adopts the permitted format of an “extended artist statement” to expose contradictions within institutional frameworks. It resists the assumption that professionalism and compliance equate to intellectual rigor, arguing that true artistic inquiry demands risk, failure, and confrontation with systemic norms. Through works like 3MUSTANGS, Facades of Dallas (Hall), SuperPOD0043: An American Painting, and Babel’n On, this thesis reveals …

Sexy In Scrubs: How The Media And Cultural Perception Of Nurses Leads To Sexual Harassment And Violence In The Workplace, Elizabeth S. Stehle May 2025

Sexy In Scrubs: How The Media And Cultural Perception Of Nurses Leads To Sexual Harassment And Violence In The Workplace, Elizabeth S. Stehle

Honors Projects

Western media has perpetuated society’s perspective of the nursing role through a sexual lens rather than a professional. Nurses face high levels of sexual harassment and violence, with some studies showing up to 80% of nurses experiencing some form of sexual harassment in the workplace at some point in their career. The relationship between the media’s sexualization of nurses has led to an increase in harassment and violence in the profession, as well as proliferating the stereotype of ‘sexy nurses.’ In this literature review, I examine both the media and cultural perception of the nurse and the data surrounding sexual …

In Their Own Words: Exploring The Political Lives Of Women Legislators In Guam, Sarah G. Elmore-Hernandez

Anthropology

In 2018, Guam experienced a historic political transformation with the election of its first woman governor and a supermajority of women senators. This electoral outcome was widely framed as a feminist milestone, reinforcing dominant narratives that equate increased female representation with progressive policy advancements. This study critically examines these assumptions by shifting the focus from quantitative representation to the political strategies and lived experiences of Guam’s women lawmakers. Employing oral history interviews, this research investigates how lawmakers conceptualize their political roles, navigate institutional structures, and shape legislative agendas. The findings reveal that while many advocate for policy priorities traditionally associated …

Optimizing Power Fluid In Jet Pump Oil Wells, Kaelin Ellis May 2025

Optimizing Power Fluid In Jet Pump Oil Wells, Kaelin Ellis

Engineering

A method for optimizing power fluid to a network of jet pump wells is established. Jet pump performance is modeled by numerically solving a system of equations for specific throat and nozzle geometries. An upper boundary is established of the most efficient geometries for each well which creates a continuous function relating power fluid to oil production. Jet pump oil wells are segregated into networks which share a common power fluid surface pump. These boundaries are added together to create a non-linear objective function. To solve power fluid distribution in a network, a reduced Newton method is applied that incorporates …

Fan-Side Upgrade To Fin-Fan Intercoolers Located At The Central Compressor Plant In Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, Heather Mckenzie

Engineering

This project proposes an upgrade to the Air-cooled Heat Exchangers (ACHE) known as the Intercoolers at the Central Compressor Plant located in the Prudhoe Bay oilfield on the North Slope of Alaska. The declining field is gas-limited for the majority of the year and the Intercoolers serve as a bottleneck for Field Gas Offtake (FGO). The current configuration incurs high maintenance costs, safety concerns, and operational inefficiencies. The scope of the proposed upgrade involves updating to a Tuf-Lite III fan blade, eliminating the existing gearboxes, and adding Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) control for the motor drive system. The VFDs enable …

Wave Driven Diffuse Aurora And Ionospheric Conductance Global Patterns, Dillon M. Gillespie May 2025

Wave Driven Diffuse Aurora And Ionospheric Conductance Global Patterns, Dillon M. Gillespie

Physics

Auroral precipitation is the second major energy source after solar irradiation that ionizes the Earth’s upper atmosphere. In this study we define 3 types of auroral activity as broadband, monoenergetic, and diffuse aurora. Diffuse aurora from electron precipitation, or diffuse electron aurora, contributes over 60% of the total auroral energy flux. Through constant collisions between the electrons and neutral particles in the atmosphere the electron flux ionizes the atmosphere and strongly contributes to the ionospheric conductance. The ionization, electron energy flux, and conductance play a significant role in defining the ionosphere-thermosphere dynamics. One major contributor to the precipitation of these …

Post-Typhoon Merbok Impact On Geographically Isolated Western Alaska Communities And Sustainable Recovery Process For Vulnerable Populations, Daryl Schaffer May 2025

Post-Typhoon Merbok Impact On Geographically Isolated Western Alaska Communities And Sustainable Recovery Process For Vulnerable Populations, Daryl Schaffer

Natural Resources

A sustainable climate-resilient community depends on their location and what is considered to be resilient. In western Alaska, primarily sustainable Indigenous subsistence lifestyle communities have proven quite resilient to climate for over 5000 years. Indigenous communities have been experiencing exponentially greater challenges from changes of climate in recent years. One storm, which traversed the entire 1300-mile geographically isolated Alaska west coast in September 2022, was more significant than previous generations. Extratropical post-typhoon Merbok became part of a disaster cascade as many communities had already endured various disasters to their locations and livelihoods which made them more vulnerable to include prior …

Kiŋikmiut Ukpuliivut: An Iňupiaq Framework For Bridging Spirituality And Stewardship In Natural Resource Management, Vernae Angnaboogok

Rural Development

Despite decades of traction and respect that Indigenous Knowledge has gained, Western and other sources of academic sciences diverge at the point of what is acceptable, what is real, and what is valid regarding Indigenous spiritual belief systems interwoven throughout Indigenous Knowledge and Indigenous management practices. My project uses Kiŋikmiut1 ukpuliivut2 and iniqtautit3 as a framework to bridge the understanding for people outside our culture about how our spiritual belief system and customary Iňupiaq4 laws ensure balance and sustainability5 ofthe resources that our people depend upon. In this work, I seek to address the misconceptions that dominant Western scientific worldviews …

Sea-Ice Bloom Dynamics, Putative Parasitoids, And Crude-Oil Impacts To Microbiota Modified By Irradiance, Kyle Dilliplaine May 2025

Sea-Ice Bloom Dynamics, Putative Parasitoids, And Crude-Oil Impacts To Microbiota Modified By Irradiance, Kyle Dilliplaine

Oceanography

Arctic sea ice serves as a critical habitat for microbial communities, supporting, in part, the Arctic food web and influencing global biogeochemical cycles. However, climate change is rapidly altering this environment leading to a shorter ice-covered period and increased light transmittance. Greater accessibility due to less ice coverage is increasing industrial and commercial activities which raises the risk of crude oil spills that threaten sea-ice microbial communities. This dissertation explores the seasonal dynamics of prokaryotes and unicellular eukaryotes during the spring algal bloom, and the impacts of potential light stress in combination with crude oil exposure on Arctic sea-ice diatoms …

Sea Ice Strain, Stress, And Fracture Activity At Kilometer Scales, Emily R. Fedders May 2025

Sea Ice Strain, Stress, And Fracture Activity At Kilometer Scales, Emily R. Fedders

Oceanography

Through-thickness fractures including cracks, leads, and pressure ridges divide sea ice into individual plates and plate assemblies. While they remain intact, plates deform via continuous strain as they interact. Radar interferometry can identify active fractures at plate assembly boundaries and measure the continuous strains between them at high spatial resolution and spatial scales from meters to kilometers. However, interferograms are only sensitive to the one dimensional component of surface strain parallel to a radar’s lines of sight. Working with coauthors, I develop a novel analytical inverse model to estimate two-dimensional, horizontal surface motion from the one-dimensional information provided by interferograms …

Comparison Of Student Success Between Asynchronous Online And In-Person Sections Of Calculus 1 Using Multiple Statistical Methods, Everett Masterman

Mathematics and Statistics

This observational study compares outcomes for students taking the in-person and asynchronous online sections of Calculus 1 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. Propensity score covariate models, propensity score stratification, propensity score matching, and multiple logistic regression were used to predict student pass rates in the course and on the final exam after accounting for demographic variables, student engagement, and student preparation. Propensity score methods showed no difference between asynchronous and in-person students. Multiple logistic regression showed that students in the in-person modality performed better after accounting for covariates.
