How Experts View The Legal System's Use Of Scientific Evidence, Shari Seidman Diamond, Richard Lempert May 2025

How Experts View The Legal System's Use Of Scientific Evidence, Shari Seidman Diamond, Richard Lempert

Articles

Legal scholars and courts frequently write about how scientific evidence is vetted and presented in legal proceedings, but the views of experts themselves have received little attention. Our research aims to fill that gap. This paper reports some of what we learned from a series of surveys we conducted, beginning with a survey in 2016 of scientists who had been elected to membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.3 Subsequent surveys were directed to subscribers of the journal Science who identified as scientists and engineers and to self-identified experts who advertised their availability as experts to lawyers or …

Many Meanings: A History Of Memory At The Meeker Home Museum, Kathleen Henry May 2025

Many Meanings: A History Of Memory At The Meeker Home Museum, Kathleen Henry

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

While public historians strive to provide accurate, contextual, and nuanced interpretations of the past, public and community memory of the past is powerful, and more concerned with identity and validation than it is with historical accuracy and complexity. These intersections of history and memory in America are complex, and have been explored for several decades by historians such as Ari Kelman, Seth Bruggeman, and David Wrobel. As a case study of the intersections of history and memory in a historic house museum, the Meeker Home Museum in Greeley, Colorado, reflects powerful narratives of past community memory, resulting in a static, …

Coming Of Age In A Time Of Darkness: Young Southern White Women During The American Civil War, Kylie Wroot

History Theses, Dissertations, and Student Creative Activity

The American Civil War is one of the most researched eras in history, but that does not mean that research will ever be complete. Historians are always discovering aspects of the war that had been largely ignored. One emerging topic has been the lives of young women and their experiences during the conflict. James MacPherson has analyzed several aspects of the war, including why its history is still relevant today. Amy Murrell Taylor and James Marten have both researched family life and children’s experiences during the war. Other historians like Drew Gilpin Faust, Giselle Roberts, and Victoria Ott have focused …

Brazil in the 1930’s and 1940’s is a case study of the influences that national and transnational ideologies had on its government and society. The result of these influences being the rise and fall of government systems and dictatorships. Brazilian social and political ideology during this time is well documented from works on nationalism, populism, the concept of the caudillo or caudillismo, and issues of transnationalism. Other works in this field refer to integralism and Tenentismo as well as assessments of authoritarianism. However, more work needs to be done on the connections between these concepts and their effects on government, …

Resource Allocation For Downlink Hybrid Noma With Nonideal Circuit Power Consumption, İlke Altin, Mehmet Akar

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This article studies the latency-constrained downlink resource allocation problem with nonideal circuit power consumption, focusing on the total energy consumption of the base station and the users. First, an optimal downlink Hybrid Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (H-NOMA) scheme for two users is proposed which gives the optimal time and power allocation. Then, we extend the H-NOMA idea to multiple users by combining it with Orthogonal Frequency Domain Multiple Access (OFDMA) and allocate subchannels utilizing the novel Bootstrapped Total-Reward Exchange Stable (B-TES) algorithm. Afterward, via simulations, we show that the H-NOMA method outperforms Orthogonal Multiple Access (OMA) and Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access (NOMA) …

Design And Optimization Of Low-Loss, High-Gain Metamaterial-Based Log-Periodic Dipole Array Antenna For Full Ka-Band Coverage, Mohamed El Moniar, Ahmed Abd El Hady, Yasser Ismail, Nihal Areed

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

This work describes a microstrip log-periodic dipole array (MLPDA) antenna that uses metamaterials and operates across the whole Ka-band. The suggested MLPDA antenna layout provides a wide bandwidth with fewer dipole elements than traditional MLPDA antennas while maintaining the same resonance frequencies. To reduce size while covering a wide operational spectrum, the antenna design includes bending dipoles as radiating elements, as well as an incomplete ground plane. Furthermore, the proposed MLPDA antenna’s energy loss has been reduced while boosting its signal strength (gain) by inserting a metamaterial-based structure in front of it at a certain distance and on the same …

Turkish Journal of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences

Automating nuclei segmentation in Hematoxylin and Eosin (H&E) stained images is crucial for advancing computational pathology. Despite significant research, challenges such as overlapping nuclei, varying scanner resolutions, and diverse nuclear morphologies continue to hinder segmentation accuracy. In this paper, we propose a deep-learning based methodology that integrates multiple data augmentation strategies with a U-Net architecture enhanced by the EfficientNetB7 encoder. To enhance generalization, we train the model using a combined dataset from MoNuSeg2018, CPM-17, and CoNSeP, exposing it to diverse staining techniques and tissue types. We then evaluate its robustness on the unseen CryoNuSeg dataset, which consists of fully annotated …

First-Generation College Students' Transition Experiences After A Bridge Program, Alison Irvine Mcmurry May 2025

First-Generation College Students' Transition Experiences After A Bridge Program, Alison Irvine Mcmurry

Theses and Dissertations

First-generation college students (FGCS) often encounter greater challenges than their peers. Universities offer transition programs like bridge programs, orientations, and advising, but service gaps contribute to FGCS difficulties. Bridge programs are often implemented for specific student groups that the university believes to be at-risk or more vulnerable than their peers. Targeted students are asked to come to campus early for additional training, education, and advising. The program is thought to bridge the gap between what they know and what they need to know to be college-ready and on-level with their peers. This case study examines the transition experiences of seven …

Collins, Theresa A. Freeman, Ryan E. Tomlinson

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

Debilitating pain is the primary clinical feature of osteoarthritis (OA) that drives the enormous healthcare costs. Osteoarthritis-related pain is often treated with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), which effectively relieve pain and inflammation by inhibition of prostaglandin synthesis. Antibodies directed against nerve growth factor (NGF) were tested some time ago as an alternative potential analgesic for musculoskeletal pain, including osteoarthritis-related pain. Unfortunately, clinical development of these drugs was put on hold due to adverse outcomes - primarily rapidly progressive osteoarthritis. Both prostaglandin synthesis and NGF have been implicated as critical mediators of strain adaptive bone remodeling, which may play a role …

Action potentials are initiated and modulated at the axon initial segment (AIS) by highly clustered ion channels. Voltage-gated Kv1 potassium channels underlie most outward AIS K+ current. AIS Kv1 channels exist in a large protein complex including ADAM22, Caspr2, and LGI1. However, their clustering mechanisms remain unknown. Because Kv1 channels have a highly conserved PDZ-binding motif, we used CRISPR-based genome editing to screen 18 PDZ domain-containing proteins identified in our previous AIS proximity proteome for their AIS localization. Among these, we found that the scaffolding proteins SCRIB and PSD93 are highly enriched at the AIS. Using CRISPR-mediated knockout, cell surface …

As technology advances, computers become increasingly proficient at interpreting and translating human language into machine-understandable text. With the help of algorithms in natural language processing (NLP), machines can now translate textual data. These algorithms help identify and extract specific text components known as aspects. The aspects represent specific attributes or topics within textual data. For instance, if a product review states, “This phone has good battery life but poor camera quality, " and attributes like 'battery life' and 'camera quality' represent aspects in the text. Aspect extraction is a pivotal process involving identifying and isolating key features or topics within …

Multiple factors drive biomolecular condensate formation. In plants, condensation of the transcription factors AUXIN RESPONSE FACTOR 7 (ARF7) and ARF19 attenuates response to the plant hormone auxin. Here, we report that actin-mediated movement of cytoplasmic ARF condensates enhances condensation. Coarse-grained molecular simulations of active polymers reveal that applied forces drive the associations of macromolecules to enhance phase separation while giving rise to dense phases that preferentially accumulate motile molecules. Our study highlights how molecular motility can drive phase separation, with implications for motile condensates while offering insights into cellular mechanisms that can regulate condensate dynamics.

Neuroinflammation plays a complex and context-dependent role in many neurodegenerative diseases. We identified a key pathogenic function of macrophages in a mouse model of a rare human congenital neuropathy in which SARM1, the central executioner of axon degeneration, is activated by hypomorphic mutations in the axon survival factor NMNAT2. Macrophage depletion blocked and reversed neuropathic phenotypes in this sarmopathy model, revealing SARM1-dependent neuroimmune mechanisms as key drivers of disease pathogenesis. In this study, we investigated the impact of chronic subacute SARM1 activation on the peripheral nerve milieu using single cell/nucleus RNA-sequencing (sc/snRNA-seq). Our analyses reveal an expansion of immune cells …
