Parents of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and co-occurring challenging behavior (e.g., aggression, self-injury, property destruction) experience higher rates of anxiety, depression, and poor overall well-being. Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which encourages psychological flexibility, is an effective intervention for addressing well-being in this population when presented in various formats. Despite its potential to increase accessibility and improve social connectedness for parents, time commitment may impact parents’ willingness to participate in virtual ACT group interventions. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the twentieth century practice of using reservations, understandings, and declarations to undermine international treaties, specifically the League of Nations and the Convention for the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Senators first attempted to attach reservations to the Treaty of Versailles after World War I in response to the proposed League of Nations. The concerns raised in the 1910s regarding sovereignty, domestic jurisdiction, and the rights of American citizens were repeated when the Genocide Convention was proposed in 1948. The Senate refused to pass the Genocide Convention until the 1980s …

Chronic pain following peripheral nerve injury is accompanied by increased neuronal activity in the somatosensory cortex. However, whether and how cortical microglia contribute to these changes is less understood. To this end, we applied an optogenetic strategy to specifically target cortical microglia and investigate their function in behavioral pain sensitization. We found that optogenetic activation of microglia in the primary somatosensory cortex (S1) via red-activated channelrhodopsin (ReaChR) triggered pain hypersensitivity and affective-motivational responses in mice. Remarkably, S1-targeted optogenetic stimulation increased microglial landscape changes and ATP release. Since the enactment of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, Canadian judges have increasingly approached the Constitution through a living constitutionalist lens, adapting the Constitution to contemporary realities and treating the text as but one interpretive modality alongside purpose and context. The Supreme Court has rooted this living constitutionalism in the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council’s judgment, Edwards v Attorney General of Canada, wherein Lord Sankey introduced the metaphor of the “living tree.” Justice Robert Sharpe and Professor Patricia McMahon have suggested that the “living tree metaphor remained a forgotten footnote until 1982.” Indeed, more formalist approaches towards …

Background: The American Society of Hematology (ASH) guidelines on treatment of pediatric venous thromboembolism (VTE) were published in 2018. In the last 6 years, there has been a 10-fold increase in the number of children involved in VTE treatment trials. Objective: The ASH Committee on Quality and Guidelines agreed to update the pediatric guidelines in conjunction with the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis (ISTH). These ASH/ISTH evidence-based guidelines are intended to support patients, clinicians, and other health care professionals in the management of pediatric patients with VTE. Pelvic fractures during pregnancy, though rare, pose significant risks to maternal and fetal health, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach to management. These injuries are predominantly caused by high-energy trauma, such as motor vehicle accidents, and are associated with a high incidence of complications, including maternal hemorrhage, placental abruption, and preterm labor. Advances in diagnostic imaging, such as low-dose CT scans and MRIs, have improved diagnostic accuracy while minimizing fetal exposure to radiation. Similarly, biomechanically tailored surgical interventions and innovative treatment strategies, including minimally invasive fixation techniques, have enhanced maternal survival rates, reaching 95% when multidisciplinary care is implemented. “Helps lower cholesterol levels” and “helps promote healthy cholesterol levels.” Both of these claims are found on pharmacy products. And to ordinary consumers, the message is the same: take this pill and improve your cholesterol. Nevertheless, Congress has placed these statements in two very different regulatory categories. The former is classified as a disease claim, and the latter as a structure/function claim. Whereas products making disease claims require years of clinical trials and analyses before regulatory approval can be granted, products making structure/function claims do not even require governmental review before they can be sold to consumers. When a child commits a crime, how do states determine if that child is culpable? There are procedural rules that determine the forum for a minor’s trial and doctrines that limit children’s exposure to the most severe sentencing. But when it comes to culpability, states employ the same substantive law whether the defendant is 50 or 15. As this Article explains, that approach is profoundly flawed. The public–private partnership between the National Institutes of Health (“NIH”) and Moderna was considered “one of the few bright spots of the pandemic.” Yet as the NIH–Moderna collaboration progressed at an unprecedented pace, going from vaccine development to FDA authorization in nine months, cracks began to appear in the partnership. Public trust in vaccinations wavered, multiple patent disputes arose, and global frustration erupted over Moderna’s lack of commitment to equitable access to the vaccine that was largely paid for by U.S. taxpayers. This Article begins by reporting the results of a comprehensive 50-state survey assessing state laws and other state sources governing the telemedicine induction (“tele-induction”) and subsequent telemedicine prescription (“tele-prescription”) of buprenorphine for the treatment of opioid use disorder (“OUD”) following the expiration of the COVID-19 public health emergency (“PHE”). Over a century ago, 15 states enacted alien land laws designed to deprive Japanese immigrants of property rights. It took half a century for these laws to be repealed. Today, alien land laws are experiencing a strong revival in America. Twelve states have enacted new versions targeting the Chinese community, with seventeen states preparing to follow suit. This Paper provides a comprehensive analysis of this revival, tracing its legal roots to early 20th-century Supreme Court cases that upheld the constitutionality of the old alien land laws. The National Bioengineered Foods Disclosure Standard (“NBFDS”) is a step in the right direction in providing a uniform labeling standard for genetically engineered organisms (“GEOs”) that meet the statutory definition of “bioengineered.” Importantly, the law provides a consensus that GEOs are safe and that labeling standards should be uniform across the United States. However, the law largely fails to settle the broader debate and the issues associated with GEO labeling. Namely, the NBFDS’s use of the term “bioengineered” causes additional confusion, and terms like “genetic modification” and “genetic engineering” remain ambiguous. We present the Aquatic Symbiosis Genomics Project, a global collaboration to generate high quality genome sequences for a wide range of eukaryotes and their microbial symbionts. Launched under the Symbiosis in Aquatic Systems Initiative of the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation, the ASG Project brings together researchers from across the globe who hope to use these reference genomes to augment and extend their analyses of the dynamics, mechanisms and environmental importance of symbioses. This research describes the conceptual development and insights from implementation of Partners for Algorithmic Literacy (PAL) - a groundbreaking student-faculty learning community model, facilitated by academic librarians, where undergraduates and instructors partner to co-design curricular plans integrating or interrogating AI in the classroom. In the fall of 2023 and 2024, two cohorts in this learning community were partnered. In weekly sessions, partners experimented with AI tools and engaged PAL’s novel Algorithmic Literacy Pedagogy Framework to guide their conversations and co-design process.

This paper draws a philosophical heritage map of Intramuros and environs. The map includes several religious sites in Intramuros and two monuments of heroes outside the walls. The paper explains the reason for drawing such a map by, firstly, discussing the theory of place-based learning. Secondly, it will discuss the philosophical walk as a dialogue with the environment (nature and the city). A philosophical heritage map is also understood not only as a tour of sites associated with philosophers and the history of ideas but a movement along sites of wonder, rumination, contemplation, and critical thinking. This study aimed to investigate the effects of aging on inhibitory control from the prefrontal cortex (PFC) to the motor cortices and inter-limb coordination during dual task standing. Participants performed single-task and dual-task standing. Ground reaction force, center-of-pressure, muscle activity, and cortical activation were measured. The older group showed a greater effective connectivity index from the intra-hemispheric dorsolateral PFC (DLPFC) to supplementary motor area (SMA) (right, p = 0.009; left, p = 0.003) and left DLPFC to right M1 (p = 0.020)than the young group across task conditions.
