Effects Of Vertical Reinforcement On The Shear Performance Of Uhpc Deep Beams With Synthetic And Steel Fibres, Hossein Mirzaaghabeik, Sanjay Kumar Shukla, Nuha S. Mashaan

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study examines the shear behaviour of ultra-high-performance concrete deep beams (UHPC-DBs) reinforced with three fibre types: 2 % hooked-end (HE) steel fibres, 0.76 % 5D steel fibres, and 0.11 % Forta-Ferro (FF) synthetic fibres. It evaluates the effects of fibre type, fibre content, vertical web reinforcement (ρsv), and shear span-to-depth ratio (λ) on shear capacity. Load-deflection curves, crack patterns, and ρsv strain were analysed, and the optimal ρsv was determined using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm to maximise shear capacity while minimising costs. Findings reveal that, compared to specimens without ρsv, those with ρsv = 0.38 % exhibit …

Handling Socio-Institutional Traps–Inertia Towards Australia’S Resilient International Development Aid Programs In The Solomon Islands, Mark Opoku Amankwa, Kwadwo Adusei-Asante, Alina Novak

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

This study critically examines how donor’s aid delivery approach, entrenched socio-institutional dynamics, and the Solomon Islands’ complex political economy create persistent barriers to Australia’s aid programming. Through a desktop research approach, institutional trap–inertia theory is applied to analyze how Australia’s aid efforts and political structures perpetuate aid inertia. The study critiques both Australia’s aid delivery approach and the internal governance challenges in a cohesive society of the SI, highlighting their intertwined roles in impeding Australia’s aid programming. The article proffers context-driven, locally adaptive strategies aimed at overcoming institutional traps and fostering more resilient and effective aid interventions.

Insights Into Prey Handling And Feeding Strategies By Ghost Crabs On Sea Turtle Eggs And Hatchlings, Casper Avenant

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

The feeding behaviour on sea turtle eggs and hatchlings by the golden ghost crab Ocypode convexa, a species endemic to the west coast of Australia, was observed in field and laboratory settings using infrared videography. On beaches where ghost crab densities are high, multiple crabs can feed on nests over several nights, often resulting in destruction of clutches. Crabs appear to anticipate the emergence of hatchlings, often congregating near nests in the moments prior to emergence. When feeding on eggs crabs rupture eggshells using the sharp tips of their claws, with tissue subsequently moved to the mouthparts for ingestion using …

Working With Patients Who Self-Injure: An Open Label Study Of An Educational Intervention To Upskill Emergency Nurses On Non-Suicidal Self-Injury, Penelope Hasking, Amanda Aiyana, Jonathon Burcham, Samantha Carey, Joanne M. Dickson, Daniel Fatovich, Logan Hopkins, Eme John, Shirley Mcgough, Chloe Mclean, Irene Ngune, Alex Wheeler

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), deliberate damage to body tissue with no intent to die, is not engaged with suicidal intent but is the most reliable predictor of later suicidal behaviour. This makes efforts to reduce self-injury critical. Emergency departments can be the gateways to care for many people who have self-injured and optimal sites for interventions that promote recovery. However, emergency nurses have anecdotally reported that they lack training and feel ill-equipped to provide care for patients who self-injure. In this open label trial (where both participants and researchers were aware who received the intervention), all nurses in a metropolitan emergency …

Research outputs 2022 to 2026

Pollination by non-flying mammals (NFMs) is thought to be associated with cryptic, dull coloured, strongly scented flowers. In Western Australia, various Banksia species exhibit these traits, suggesting adaptation to primary pollination by NFMs, particularly the marsupial honey possum (Tarsipes rostratus). Here, we compare floral visitation rates and assess contribution to fruit set of NFMs and other pollinators in four species of Banksia with contrasting floral traits. Camera trap-based surveys revealed that honeyeater birds visited all species equally and were more frequent visitors than NFMs to the brightly coloured, unscented flowers of B. sessilis and B. splendida. By contrast, NFMs were …

Associations Between Vitamin D Deficiency And Sociodemographic Factors, Lifestyle Behaviors, And Metabolic Conditions: A Cross-Sectional Study From The Hnnhs In Greece, Asmae Mohamad Sadek

Theses

Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is a widespread global health concern associated with various sociodemographic, lifestyle, dietary, and metabolic factors. While previous studies examined VDD in Greece, few provided a comprehensive analysis across multiple determinants using representative national data. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and predictors of VDD among Greek adults and to examine its associations with sociodemographic, dietary, behavioral, and metabolic variables using data from the Hellenic National Nutrition and Health Survey (HNNHS). A cross-sectional analysis was conducted among 978 adults (≥19 years) from the HNNHS. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentrations < 20 ng/mL were defined as deficient and ≥20 ng/mL as normal. The median age of participants was 40.2 years, and 62.0% were female. The overall prevalence of VDD was 46.0%, with the highest rate observed among adults aged ≥60 years (62.2%). VDD was significantly associated with older age (p < 0.001), retirement status (62.9% among retired; p < 0.001), low and sedentary physical activity (32.7% and 32.6% vs. 50.8% among highly active; p < 0.001), higher HDL (median 52.0 vs. 49.0 mg/dL among VDD vs Normal; p = 0.001), elevated serum calcium (median 9.4 vs. 9.2 mg/dL among VDD vs Normal; p = 0.020), and lower insulin levels (median 7.5 vs. 8.0 μIU/mL among VDD vs Normal; p = 0.044). Dietary intake (total energy and macronutrients) and body composition were not significantly associated with VDD. In the multivariate model, significant independent predictors of VDD included being retired (AOR = 2.383; 95% CI: 1.596–3.558; p < 0.001), having higher serum calcium levels (AOR = 1.563; 95% CI: 1.078–2.266; p = 0.019), and higher HDL levels (AOR = 1.016; 95% CI: 1.005–1.027; p = 0.001). Physical activity level was also a key determinant; participants classified as sedentary or low active had significantly higher odds of deficiency compared to highly active individuals (AOR = 0.468; 95% CI: 0.319–0.690; p < 0.001). This counterintuitive result may be influenced by factors such as increased indoor physical activity, and warrants further investigation. Dietary intake and body composition were not significantly associated with VDD. The findings underscore the importance of incorporating sociodemographic and lifestyle factors into prevention strategies. This project presents the development of a deployable Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) antenna designed for a 16U CubeSat platform. The primary challenge in SAR satellite design lies in the need for large antennas to achieve high-resolution imaging, which traditionally results in increased satellite size and cost. To address this, the proposed solution employs a scalable 4 × 21 patch antenna array operating at 1.275 GHz, fabricated on a flexible Polyimide-based Printed Circuit Board (PCB). This flexible PCB allows the antenna to safely roll during deployment, avoiding damage and facilitating compact storage. However, Polyimide poses challenges due to higher losses and …
