A Research Guide And Annotated Bibliography For The Comparative Study Of Lgbtqia+ Social Movements Across East Asia, San Lee
FIRE Fund Bibliographies
This bibliography includes literature on how LGBTQIA+ movements across East Asia have evolved through local histories, politics, and cultural understandings of sexuality. While many societies had pre-existing, non-Western concepts of same-sex relations, post-1990s democratization and global human rights discourse reshaped activism in distinct ways. Movements in places like the People’s Republic of China, the Republic of China (Taiwan), South Korea, Japan, and Hong Kong engage with nationalism, decolonial perspectives, and social norms to construct unique approaches to queer rights. The guide highlights the need to understand LGBTQIA+ activism through each society’s specific historical and political context.

The Application Of Comparative Law In Public International Law Research, Lê Thị Anh Đào, Adrianna N. Globokar
The Application Of Comparative Law In Public International Law Research, Lê Thị Anh Đào, Adrianna N. Globokar
Akron Law Student Publications
Comparative law analyses the similarities and differences between legal systems, often across different countries or jurisdictions, and examines how those systems operate. Public international law, by contrast, governs the conduct of actors subject to international law, primarily sovereign states, and international organisations, through legal frameworks and principles. Although comparative law and international law are traditionally treated as distinct areas of study, this paper explores the potential benefits of adopting a comparative approach to public international law. Insights from comparative law can deepen the public’s understanding of public international law and advocate for the establishment of “comparative public international law” as …

The role of school principals in shaping effective learning environments and supporting positive student outcomes has gained increasing recognition in educational research and policy. This study investigates university admission factors of a predominantly Hispanic institution associated with success on the 268 Principal as Instructional Leaders Examination, a critical assessment for aspiring school principals in Texas. Employing a quantitative research design, this study analyzed data from 145 graduate students who took the examination. This study employed multiple regression analysis to examine the relationship between various admission predictors, academic and demographic variables, and exam performance. Key findings revealed that the bachelor’s GPA …
Responsible Realism About Artificial Intelligence: How Ai Is Shaping Legal And Dispute Resolution Practice, Education, And Scholarship, John Lande
Faculty Publications
This article synthesizes the views of legal scholars examining how generative artificial intelligence (AI) is affecting legal and dispute resolution practice, education, and scholarship. They share a perspective of responsible realism – recognizing both the promise and the perils of AI. It is already reshaping how lawyers, neutrals, educators, students, and scholars work – and its influence will only grow.
The scholars identify clear benefits: broader access, greater efficiency, and new support for professional learning. They also warn of serious risks, including bias, deskilling, and erosion of judgment. Avoiding both hype and panic, they analyze developments, offer realistic strategies, and …
Training Humanoids To Use Good Dispute Resolution Language, John Lande
Training Humanoids To Use Good Dispute Resolution Language, John Lande
Faculty Publications
This short essay uses satire to spotlight the entrenched, misleading terminology widely used in the dispute resolution field, especially in legal and academic settings. Drawing on metaphors of humanoids, bots, and malware, it critiques outdated jargon like “facilitative” and “evaluative” mediation and proposes clearer alternatives derived from Real Practice Systems theory. It describes efforts to train an AI tool, the RPS Negotiation and Mediation Coach, to model improved language use and nudge human users toward better decision-making. Though light in tone, it reflects a serious commitment to reforming the way we talk about and practice negotiation and mediation.

From The Ambassador’S Desk, C. Naseer Ahmad
Swiss American Historical Society Review
An ambassador is an official representative appointed by a country’s government to manage diplomatic relations and promote its interests in a foreign nation or international organization. This role is as vital as it is diverse, involving a wide array of responsibilities that go beyond traditional diplomacy. Ambassadors must deftly juggle numerous tasks, all essential to the development and maintenance of peaceful international relationships. They serve not only as representatives of their nation’s government but also as stewards of its interests, charged with boosting economic, cultural, and political ties with their host country.

"A Man’S Home Is His Castle"? Intimate Partner Violence, Firearm Surrender, And Home Searches Under Article I, Section 7 Of The Washington Constitution, Dana Raigrodski
Washington Law Review
Intimate partner violence (IPV) remains a vexing problem in Washington. Firearms make intimate partner violence much more dangerous and, frequently, deadly. To protect victims of IPV and to reduce its severity when guns are present, the State of Washington put in place a comprehensive statutory scheme to disarm perpetrators of IPV. In 2022, however, the Washington Court of Appeals for Division II held, in State v. Flannery, that the statutory firearm surrender scheme violates article I, section 7 of the Washington Constitution, which prohibits disturbing a person’s private affairs or invading their home without authority of law. This Article …
Why Medicaid Is Addressing Homelessness With Section 1115 Waivers: A Critical Examination Of The United States' Federalist Mental Health System, Joshua Haas
Washington Law Review
Housing and health care are deeply interconnected, and their systemic relationship profoundly affects individual and societal well-being. Inadequate funding has undermined the American mental health system for decades, leading to gaps in care that have caused lasting harm to vulnerable individuals and society as a whole. This Comment examines the historical connections between homelessness and the American mental health system. It explores the benefits and criticisms of the United States’ federalist approach to health care, particularly focusing on Medicaid and its “section 1115 waivers,” which grant states flexibility to develop innovative, state-specific Medicaid programs. Recently, states began to utilize section …
Under The Umbrella Of Water Law: Why Rainwater Harvesting Should Constitute A Valid Water Right, Jordann Krouse
Under The Umbrella Of Water Law: Why Rainwater Harvesting Should Constitute A Valid Water Right, Jordann Krouse
Washington Law Review
Rain is a major source of water. It provides for our greatest needs, such as feeding our gardens, crops, rivers, and lakes. As global climate change continues to unfold, the impacts of water availability and water pollution simultaneously grow more urgent. Water rights are a mechanism in the United States’ legal system to allocate, regulate, and manage water as a natural resource. These rights are limited, however, in their coverage and varied in their application. For example, access to rainwater is not a recognized water right despite being a major source of water. The ecological and economic incentives of rainwater …
A Noncompete By Any Other Name: Assessing The Validity Of Training Repayment Agreements Under Washington Law, Hannah Lukomski
A Noncompete By Any Other Name: Assessing The Validity Of Training Repayment Agreements Under Washington Law, Hannah Lukomski
Washington Law Review
Training Repayment Agreements (TRAs) are restrictive employment covenants that require an employee to pay their employer a fixed or prorated sum for training costs if the employee quits their job within some period defined by the agreement. The prevalence of TRAs has drastically increased in low-wage employment. TRAs harm employees by imposing an artificial financial constraint that disincentivizes employees from leaving their employer within the contract duration. The Washington State Legislature has not directly addressed TRAs despite having articulated limits on other restrictive employment covenants, like noncompetition agreements. This Comment reviews federal agency actions and other states’ approaches in response …
The Virgin Of Guadalupe And The Liminality Of Pregnancy, Jason Oosting
The Virgin Of Guadalupe And The Liminality Of Pregnancy, Jason Oosting
Theses
This thesis suggests that the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe, during the Colonial Period, provided the diverse population of colonial New Spain (and, in particular, Mexico City/Tenochtitlán) with an image that functioned to unify even some of the most seemingly disparate belief systems, those of Christian Spaniards and Indigenous Nahuatl traditions. More specifically, this thesis argues that this unification was achieved because the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe in the 16th and 17th centuries was likely understood as representing a divine pregnant woman to many colonial viewers—a state that bound viewers, both Spanish and Indigenous alike, to shared …

Acquisition Strategy For Innovation Under Competence-Destroying Change: Empirical Study—Pharmaceutical Company's Biotechnology Company Acquisition, Joo Tae Sung
Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)
In response to declining R&D productivity and successive patent cliffs, pharmaceutical companies are increasingly acquiring biotechnology firms to sustain innovation. These acquisitions often occur under conditions of competence-destroying change, where the acquirer's chemistry-based knowledge base does not overlap with the biotechnology expertise of the target, challenging traditional theories that emphasize absorptive capacity and knowledge similarity.
This study introduces therapeutic knowledge, defined as the acquirer’s expertise in specific disease areas, as a distinct and critical dimension that interacts with both chemistry-based and biotechnology-based knowledge. Using a dataset of 212 observations across therapeutic areas from 80 acquisitions, the analysis uncovers an inverted …

Bridging Theory And Practice: A Strategic Overhaul Of The Undergraduate Teacher Preparation Internship Experience At A Small Private University, Marisa L. Corey, Jennifer D. Sargent, Michelle R. Stuart
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
Behind the steady decline in teacher retention in the United States—not to mention the lower number of candidates entering the profession—many teachers are leaving early on account of having been inadequately prepared for the challenges of a diverse classroom. Teacher preparation programs (TPPs), also known as teacher education programs (TEPs), are tasked with equipping preservice student teachers with the knowledge, skills, and strategies that they need to succeed. However, a recent audit conducted by TPI-US (Teacher Preparation Inspection–US) revealed significant deficits in the undergraduate TPP at an identified university in southeast Florida. A failure to align coursework with clinical internship …

Investigation Of Retention And Dehydration Of Preformed Particle Gel For Conformance Control In Fractured Carbonates, Abdulaziz A. Almakimi, Abdullah O. Almansour, Junchen Liu, Baojun Bai, Ibnelwaleed A. Hussein
Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Preformed particle gel (PPG) treatment has proved to be among the most effective methods to reduce excessive water production in fractured reservoirs. The blocking ability of PPGs to fractures or fracture-like features is highly dependent on injected gel properties and volume. Gel dehydration during extrusion through fracture is common and has a considerable effect on gel properties, transport, and plugging efficiency. As the gel particles propagate through the fracture, continuous dehydration is often associated and causes the gel to concentrate and require high-pressure gradients to move. Dehydration might be desirable to a certain limit because it can help to form …

The research aims to evaluate the effectiveness of these frameworks in addressing trauma, fostering equitable learning environments, and implementing culturally responsive practices. Using qualitative methods, data were gathered from semi-structured interviews with four former CPS leaders and a document analysis of CPS frameworks. The analysis revealed the alignment of CPS practices with equity-focused priorities outlined by the Learning Policy Institute (Hammond et al., 2020). Findings suggest that Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) can effectively mitigate the impact of trauma and …
Culturally Responsive Intimate Partner Violence (Ipv) Service Needs Among African Immigrant Women: Examining The Impact Of Cultural Norms And Psychosocial Barriers On Safety Perceptions And Help-Seeking Behaviors, Titilayo Ogunbambi
Dissertations
Intimate Partner Violence (IPV) remains a pervasive public health and social justice issue globally, with African immigrant women in the United States facing compounded challenges as they navigate cultural, structural, and systemic barriers, including migration-related vulnerabilities and attachment to cultural values that shape their decisions and experiences. Although formal IPV services exist, they often fail to address the lived realities and culturally specific needs of this population, leading to underutilization and barriers in seeking help. This qualitative study examines how cultural norms, psychosocial barriers, and systemic inequities influence safety perceptions and help-seeking behaviors among African immigrant women survivors of IPV. …
