TopoComplexity is a Python package designed for efficient and customizable quantification of topographic complexity using four advanced methods: two-dimensional continuous wavelet transform analysis, fractal dimension estimation, rugosity index, and terrain position index calculations. This package addresses the lack of open-source software for these advanced terrain analysis techniques essential for modern geomorphology and geohazard research, enhancing data comparison and reproducibility. By assessing topographic complexity across multiple spatial scales, pyTopoComplexity allows users to identify characteristic morphological scales of studied landforms. The software repository also includes a Jupyter Notebook that integrates components from the surface-process modeling platform Landlab (Hobley et al., 2017), facilitating …

Having A Cow: Exploring The Economic And Mental Health Challenges Of Dairying In The Upper Valley, Ava J. Ori
Environmental Studies Senior Theses
Until late in the 20th century, the dairyman was an influential actor in the fabric of the Upper Valley consisting of Grafton, Orange, Sullivan and Windsor counties (Rozwenc, 1981 & Weld, 1905). Dairy farmers were critical to both the economic growth of the region and the construction of a local identity centered around distinctive high quality dairy products. However, the dairy farmers responsible for the bucolic feel and scrappy independence unique to the Upper Valley are being traded in for massive operations lacking both quality of milk and the cultural intricacy specific to local dairies. In 1905 there were 4,173 …
A Comparative Study Of Standards-Based And Traditional Grading Among Ninth-Grade Students, Senitra Lachelle Upton
A Comparative Study Of Standards-Based And Traditional Grading Among Ninth-Grade Students, Senitra Lachelle Upton
Tennessee State University Alumni Theses and Dissertations
Abstract This study examined the impact of standards-based grading (SBG) on the performance of ninth-grade students in English and Mathematics from 2021 to 2023. Using a comparative research design, archival performance data from School A (SBG) and School B (traditional grading) in a public school district in Tennessee were analyzed. Independent t-tests showed that Math scores were consistently higher under traditional grading (p < .001, d = 0.53-0.70) across all years. In English, SBG students outperformed their peers in 2021 (p = .001, d = 0.32), but by 2023, traditional grading yielded higher scores (p = .002, d = 0.46). These findings challenge the assumption that SBG improves academic achievement and highlight the role of contextual factors such as teacher adaptation, implementation fidelity, and subject-specific learning demands. The decline in English performance under SBG suggests difficulties in maintaining standards alignment and student acclimatization to a mastery-based system. In contrast, traditional grading's structured point system may better support procedural retention in Mathematics. This study emphasized the need for systemic evaluation of grading reforms, considering subject-specific requirements, student behaviors, and community attitudes. While SBG aligns with mastery-oriented instruction, its effectiveness depends on addressing practical concerns, such as teacher workload, grading consistency, and assessment transparency. These findings contribute to the discourse on equity in grading and encourage policymakers to adopt evidence-driven, context-based decisions. Future research should explore subgroup variations and longitudinal effects of grading interventions to enhance diverse instructional practices. In this source of income discrimination case, the plaintiff tenant, obtained a preliminary injunction preventing the landlord, from commencing a nonpayment proceeding. The court found that the landlord repeatedly obstructed tenant's attempt to use her Emergency Housing Voucher for "leasing in place" by refusing to submit necessary paperwork, citing arrears, and failing to provide a valid Tax ID. The injunction was granted to preserve tenant's voucher and residency, emphasizing the landlord's obligation under New York City and State Human Rights Laws to accept lawful sources of income.

Ecdysterone, often dubbed a “natural steroid,” has garnered significant attention among athletes for its reputed growth-promoting and anabolic properties. Unlike synthetic anabolic steroids, which are classified as controlled substances, ecdysteroids remain largely unregulated in many countries and are widely marketed as dietary supplements. Notably, ecdysterone has been included in the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) monitoring program, highlighting its potential impact on athletic performance and raising questions about its regulation. Emerging evidence indicates that, unlike traditional anabolic steroids that act primarily via the Androgen Receptor (AR), ecdysterone’s anabolic effects may be mediated through Estrogen Receptors (ERs), particularly Estrogen Receptor beta (ERβ). …

#Clandestini: How Italy's Center-Right Parliamentary Coalition Frames The Migrant Crisis On Social Media, Jenna Lynn Depasquale
Dissertations and Theses
This dissertation examines the intersection of Italian neo-fascism, the Mediterranean migrant crisis, and digital media. Through a qualitative content analysis of the Twitter and Instagram posts made by Italy's center-right parliamentary coalition from 2014-2018, this research outlines frameworks that facilitate both the physical and social deaths of migrants. Twitter is a platform on which bite-sized xenophobic messages characterize migrants as criminals, spoiled youth, spreaders of infectious disease, and future terrorists--sometimes in a contradictory fashion. Instagram is a medium for conveying Italian identity and history, which disregards the longstanding contributions of people of color, including Muslims, in Southern Italy. Comment sections …

What This Work Really Takes: Lessons, Tensions, And Student Perspectives In A Social Justice Math Classroom, Kathryn Elizabeth Roman
Dissertations and Theses
In recent years, there have been growing calls for mathematics instruction that engages students in understanding and critiquing injustice through mathematics. While resources for social justice math (SJM) lessons have become increasingly available, implementing these lessons in real classrooms--with real students, real time constraints, and real pressures--remains a challenge. This dissertation explores how teachers and students navigate this complexity through three connected papers.
The first paper introduces a framework to support teachers and mathematics teacher educators (MTEs) in selecting and modifying pre-designed SJM lessons (PSJMLs). The framework is organized around three guiding principles: (1) center student identity and teacher self-awareness, …

Development Of A Low-Cost Electron Microscope For Educational Purposes, Christopher Halseth
Dissertations and Theses
Electron microscopy is a powerful tool for exploring microscopic world, yet its high cost and operational complexity severely limit accessibility, particularly within educational institutions. Commercial systems are often designed as opaque "black boxes," further hindering hands-on learning and experimentation. This dissertation introduces the Educational Scanning/Transmission Electron Microscope (EduSEM), a project designed to overcome these barriers by developing a low-cost, modular, and transparent electron microscope optimized for educational use.
The EduSEM achieves significant cost reduction by operating in a rough vacuum environment (1-20 mTorr), eliminating the need for expensive high-vacuum pumps. This necessitates novel component designs tolerant of higher pressures. The …

Breaking The Rules: Post-Translational Modifications And Proteome Dynamics During Anoxia, Chelsea Jordan Hughes
Dissertations and Theses
Most organisms are ill-equipped to survive anoxia, but some organisms have developed molecular strategies to mitigate the cellular stressors associated with a lack of oxygen. While it is established that anoxic survival is contingent on metabolic suppression, it is unclear what mechanisms support this change in gene expression. Gene expression is regulated by a variety of mechanisms within the cell, including alteration of chromatin structure through histone modifications and protein modifications which contribute to the ever-changing proteomic landscape of the cell. Protein modifications such as ubiquitylation can lead to the degradation of proteins, while modifications to transcription factors can change …
Efficient Signal Synthesis For Data Augmentation Using Generative Ai, Yagna Veera Narayan Kaasaragadda
Efficient Signal Synthesis For Data Augmentation Using Generative Ai, Yagna Veera Narayan Kaasaragadda
Theses and Dissertations
Modern signal processing AI applications face increasing demands for diverse training data while operating under computational constraints. State-of-the-art generative models, though effective, often require prohibitive resources, limiting their deployment in real-time or embedded systems. This thesis proposes a computationally efficient framework for synthetic signal generation using a two-stage architecture that combines a Vector Quantized Variational Autoencoder (VQ-VAE) with either a decoder-only transformer or a discrete diffusion model. The VQ-VAE encodes high-dimensional signals into discrete latent tokens, significantly reducing model complexity while enabling symbolic sequence modeling. These discrete representations are then modeled using transformer-based autoregressive models or Score Entropy Discrete Diffusion …

Cisplatin Palbociclib Combination Differentially Modulates Pten Akt Signaling Via Hsp90 In Hepatocellular Carcinoma Cells., Eman Ramadan
Pharmacy
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) presents a significant global health challenge, marked by high mortality and recurrence. This study investigated the synergistic potential of cisplatin and palbociclib (C + P) against HCC cell lines. RT-qPCR revealed that C + P significantly downregulated HCC-related genes, including Hsp90, β-catenin, and components of the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway, compared to cisplatin alone and controls. Western blotting confirmed a reduction in phosphorylated AKT (P-AKT) with palbociclib and C + P, while PTEN, a tumor suppressor, was upregulated in the C + P group. Annexin V-FITC assays demonstrated a substantial increase in apoptosis in palbociclib and C + P …

Advances In And Applications Of Capillary Scale Liquid Chromatography, Samuel William Foster
Advances In And Applications Of Capillary Scale Liquid Chromatography, Samuel William Foster
Theses and Dissertations
Analytical-scale high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) is one of the most widely used analytical techniques in the world. Efforts have been made to reduce the mobile phase consumption of HPLC by reducing the inner diameter (I.D.) of the column. By using capillary-scale columns (< 0.5 mm I.D.), separations can be performed with orders of magnitude less solvent consumption. This work describes advances made to capillary scale instrumentation as well as applications enabled by these advances. A compact capillary-scale LC was used for the analysis of numerous pharmaceutical and illicit drug compounds for point of need analysis. A miniaturized mass spectrometer was coupled to this instrument for on-line reaction monitoring within a standard chemical fume hood. Kinetic profiles of commercially available capillary columns were developed in order to provide guidance to others during column selection. The implementation of a column oven improved the analysis of large biopharmaceuticals. Several critical quality attributes of monoclonal antibodies including fragmentation, charge variants, and glycosylation profiles were able to be determined on the capillary scale. These results will help to make capillary-scale liquid chromatography a more viable solution for chromatographic analysis.

The Effects Of Post Activation Potentiation Using Accommodating Resistance, Brennan Sweet
The Effects Of Post Activation Potentiation Using Accommodating Resistance, Brennan Sweet
Doctorate in Kinesiology
Post activation potentiation is the short increase of power output following a heavy exercise. This effect could be due to several mechanisms, the most popular are increased sensitivity of actin and myosin to calcium or alpha motoneuron reactivity. The idea behind using the accommodating resistance is that eccentrics get lighter throughout the movement to avoid sticking points whilst changing the strength curve of the exercise. This may cause a greater stretch reflex and create more force from the weakest position of the movement because of the eccentrics being quicker also known as. Using accommodating resistance may also be less fatiguing …

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is a polymicrobial condition of the vaginal microbiota associated with a variety of sexually transmitted infections, infections of maternal and fetal tissues during pregnancy, and even some infections outside of the reproductive tract, including the urinary tract and mouth. BV has also been associated with conditions in which the body generates prominent inflammatory reactions to microbes, including infections of the cervix and other upper genital tract tissues. For reasons still not understood, BV is a highly recurrent and often difficult-to-treat condition, complicating attempts to prevent these associated infections. An additional layer of complexity arises from the increasing …

Seasonal influenza viruses cause significant global illness and death annually, and the potential spillover of avian H5N1 poses a serious pandemic threat. Traditional influenza vaccines target the variable hemagglutinin (HA) protein, necessitating annual vaccine updates, while the slower-evolving neuraminidase (NA) presents a promising target for broader protection. We investigated the breadth of anti-NA B cell responses to seasonal influenza vaccination in humans. We screened plasmablast-derived monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) from three donors, identifying 11 clonally distinct NA mAbs from 268 vaccine-specific mAbs. Among these, mAb-297 showed exceptionally broad NA inhibition, effectively protecting mice against lethal doses of influenza A and B …

Several "primary atopic disorders" are linked to monogenic defects that attenuate TCR signaling, favoring T helper type 2 (TH2) cell differentiation. Patients with CARD11-associated atopy with dominant interference of NF-κB signaling (CADINS) disease suffer from severe atopy, caused by germline loss-of-function/dominant interfering (LOF/DI) CARD11 variants. The CARD11 scaffold enables TCR-induced activation of NF-κB, mTORC1, and JNK signaling, yet the function of CARD11-dependent JNK signaling in T cells remains nebulous. Here we show that CARD11 is critical for TCR-induced activation of JNK1 and JNK2, as well as canonical JUN/FOS AP-1 family members. Patient-derived CARD11 DI variants attenuated WT CARD11 JNK signaling, …

Screening digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) aims to identify breast cancer early when treatment is most effective, leading to reduced mortality. In addition to early detection, the information contained within DBT images may also inform subsequent risk stratification and guide risk-reducing management. Using transfer learning, we refined a model in the Joanne Knight Breast Health Cohort at Washington University, a cohort of 5,066 women with DBT screening (mean age, 54.6), among whom 105 were diagnosed with breast cancer (26 ductal carcinoma in situ). We applied the model to external data from the Emory Breast Imaging Dataset, a cohort of 7,017 women …

The relationship between TP53 and transposable elements (TEs) has been obscure. Given the important role of TEs in oncogenesis, a comprehensive profiling of TE expression dynamics under the regulation of TP53 provides valuable resources for more clarity in TP53's roles in cancer. In this study, we characterized the TE transcriptomic landscape using long-read RNA-seq and short-read RNA-seq in three cancer cell lines varying only in

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis, is a chronic inflammatory disorder of the gastrointestinal tract with rising incidence and an unclear etiology. Innate lymphoid cells (ILCs) have recently emerged as key regulators of mucosal immunity and tissue homeostasis and are increasingly implicated in IBD. Unlike adaptive lymphocytes, ILCs do not require antigen recognition and clonal expansion to respond rapidly to environmental cues and shape immune responses. In a healthy gut, ILCs maintain intestinal homeostasis by guarding the epithelial barrier, protecting against pathogens, and mounting proper responses to external insults. However, their altered differentiation, proliferation, recruitment, activation, …
