The Clinical Utility Of Measuring Emotion Dysregulation In Autistic Youth, Monica S. Trevino Jun 2025

The Clinical Utility Of Measuring Emotion Dysregulation In Autistic Youth, Monica S. Trevino

Dissertations

Autistic youth experience disproportionately high rates and severity of emotion dysregulation, which is linked to behavioral challenges, psychiatric comorbidities, familial stress, and increased emergency service and hospitalization use. Despite its clinical significance, emotion dysregulation in autistic youth remains relatively understudied and misunderstood, partly due to the lack of standardized assessment tools and limited research on its heterogeneity within autistic populations. In the present study, structural equation modeling was used to 1) validate the Emotion Dysregulation Inventory (EDI) and assess measurement invariance in a diverse sample and 2) explore associations among emotion dysregulation, autism symptoms, and related child and family characteristics, …

Derivation And Experimental Validation Of A Parameterized Nonlinear Froude–Krylov Force Model For Heaving-Point-Absorber Wave Energy Converters, Houssein Yassin, Tania Demonte Gonzalez, Gordon Parker, Giorgio Bacelli, Carlos Michelen Jun 2025

Derivation And Experimental Validation Of A Parameterized Nonlinear Froude–Krylov Force Model For Heaving-Point-Absorber Wave Energy Converters, Houssein Yassin, Tania Demonte Gonzalez, Gordon Parker, Giorgio Bacelli, Carlos Michelen

Michigan Tech Publications

Wave energy converters (WECs) have gained significant attention as a promising renewable energy source. Optimal control strategies, crucial for maximizing energy extraction, have traditionally relied on linear models based on small motion assumptions. However, recent studies indicate that these models do not adequately capture the complex dynamics of WECs, especially when large motions are introduced to enhance power absorption. The nonlinear Froude–Krylov (FK) forces, particularly in heaving-point-absorbers with varying cross-sectional areas, are acknowledged as key contributors to this discrepancy. While high-fidelity computational models are accurate, they are impractical for real-time control applications due to their complexity. This paper presents a …

What Utahns Can Do To Strengthen Girls & Women: Findings From Community Conversations Across Utah, Corinne Clarkson, Susan R. Madsen

Marketing and Strategy Faculty Publications

For many people, Utah is a great place to live.1 The state consistently ranks high in national rankings and boasts high volunteerism, affordability, happiness, outdoor recreation, social mobility, and more.2 These top rankings emphasize qualities we can—and should—be pleased with. However, extensive research continues to show that women and girls are not thriving in many critical ways, and that has detrimental effects for Utah families and communities.3 From economic insecurity, limited access to mental healthcare, sexism in the workplace, and unequal representation in all sectors of leadership, Utah women face a myriad of challenges, often without the …

Portuguese For Mozambican Mothers – A Language Empowerment App, Josh Kindarara, Alexandre Lopes, Gwendolyn Patwardhan, Riana Santos, Sara Wheeler Jun 2025

Portuguese For Mozambican Mothers – A Language Empowerment App, Josh Kindarara, Alexandre Lopes, Gwendolyn Patwardhan, Riana Santos, Sara Wheeler

Computer Science and Engineering Senior Theses

In Mecúfi, Mozambique, the mothers of children who attend school through the DIFF EDUCATION program have a strong desire to learn Portuguese, the country’s national language, due to colonization. However, they have minimal formal education and little to no experience with technology. They are unable to read or write in any language, including their native language, Makhuwa, making many current educational resources unusable. This leaves these mothers without accessible, culturally relevant tools to help address their linguistic needs.

This project focuses on developing an educational application designed for non-literate mothers in rural Mozambique. The app emphasizes visual and auditory learning …

Tourism Networks As A Mechanism For Degrowth: The Case Of The Burren Ecotourism Network In Ireland, Aisling Ward, Shirley Millar

Publications

This exploratory paper examines how a community-based ecotourism network can sustain a destination from an economic, environmental and social perspective while pertaining to a degrowth approach that measures success beyond the traditional economic variables of volume and revenue. It focuses on the Burren Eco-tourism Network (BEN) in the West of Ireland, a region known for its unique landscape and natural heritage. Nine qualitative in-depth interviews were completed using a community-based tourism case study methodology. Evidence of a degrowth mindset was littered throughout the research and this was verified through the voluntary nature surrounding its origins, the equal requirements, training and …

The Blue Division In The Soviet Union: Cultural Exchange Through The Lens Of Art, Abigail Beus Jun 2025

The Blue Division In The Soviet Union: Cultural Exchange Through The Lens Of Art, Abigail Beus

Undergraduate Honors Theses

This thesis examines the cultural encounters and artistic interactions between Spanish Blue Division volunteers and the Soviet Union during World War II. While scholarship has long focused on the grand-scale looting conducted by the Nazis, Spain’s role—particularly that of the Blue Division—in wartime art theft and cultural exchange has been significantly underexplored. Sent by Franco’s fascist regime to support Hitler’s invasion of the Soviet Union, the Blue Division served not only as military auxiliaries but also as cultural intermediaries. Drawing on memoirs, letters, and the Blue Division’s own newspaper Hoja de Campaña, this study analyzes how Spanish soldiers encountered, …

The Epistemological Dimension Of Dewey’S Emergentist Metaphysics: Sense And Signification, Andrii Leonov Jun 2025

The Epistemological Dimension Of Dewey’S Emergentist Metaphysics: Sense And Signification, Andrii Leonov

Center for Dewey Studies Essay Award

I argue that Dewey had a kind of naturalistic or pragmatic epistemology already in his Experience and Nature which constitutes the Pragmatic Epistemology View. Dewey’s naturalistic epistemology is exemplified by his theory of “sense” and “signification” and as such is the first order consequence of Dewey’s second order qualitative naturalism. Instead of the classical epistemological question, “How is knowledge possible anyway, überhaupt?”, Dewey’s pragmatically reconstructed version of it would be “How do we make sense of the world that is around us?” Instead of the classical “theory of knowledge,” Dewey’s pragmatic epistemology can be seen as a theory …

Adam Smith’S Modeling Of Agents: Roots Versus Consequences Of Action, Vernon L. Smith, Sabiou M. Inoua Jun 2025

Adam Smith’S Modeling Of Agents: Roots Versus Consequences Of Action, Vernon L. Smith, Sabiou M. Inoua

ESI Publications

Adam Smith founded his investigations of economic and social exchanges on the roots of human action (sympathy, need, self-interest), unlike the utilitarians (Hume and the neoclassical economists), who centered theirs on the consequences of human action (pleasure, utility of outcome). This distinction is key to understanding the contrast between the two schools of thought, as we emphasize in this chapter.

Secondary data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Adolescent Behaviors and Experiences Survey database were analyzed. These …

The Paradox Of Choice: User Preferences And Completion Rates In Single-Session Vs. Multi-Session Digital Mental Health Interventions, Emily M. Bowers, Korena S. Klimczak, Ty B. Aller, Michael E. Levin Jun 2025

The Paradox Of Choice: User Preferences And Completion Rates In Single-Session Vs. Multi-Session Digital Mental Health Interventions, Emily M. Bowers, Korena S. Klimczak, Ty B. Aller, Michael E. Levin

Psychology Faculty Publications

Digital mental health interventions (DMHIs) offer scalable solutions for addressing mental health needs, but low adherence remains a significant challenge. Single session DMHIs may offer a feasible alternative to address this issue, providing an accessible and low-effort option for users. The present study examines whether adding the choice of a single session DMHI in addition to a multi-session DMHI provides a feasible alternative for users who might otherwise disengage. This study examined naturalistic data from 509 university students who registered for a 12-session DMHI, single session DMHI, or both. The majority (58%) chose only the multi-session DMHI, while 24.2% chose …

Stakeholders' Expectations And Experiences Of Being Involved With A Global Accreditation Process For Midwifery Centres In Lmics: A Rapid Ethnography, Summer M. Aronson, Laura Batinelli, Lucia Rocca-Ihenacho, Jennifer R. Stevens Jun 2025

Stevens

College of Health Professions Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: This study explored the expectations and experiences of stakeholders involved in the accreditation of midwifery centres (MCs) in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). With increasing evidence that MCs provide safe, respectful, and evidence-based care that improves maternal and neonatal outcomes, accreditation may serve as a mechanism to bridge quality gaps in maternal health systems, particularly in regions with high maternal and neonatal mortality.

METHODS: A rapid ethnographic approach, combining participant observation and semi-structured interviews, was conducted in partnership with the GoodBirth Network (GBN), which identified six pilot midwifery centres in Haiti, Uganda, and South Africa. Convenience sampling was applied, …

Delaunay Keyer For Colorspace-Local Matte Extraction And Spill Suppression, Isaac J. Criddle Jun 2025

Delaunay Keyer For Colorspace-Local Matte Extraction And Spill Suppression, Isaac J. Criddle

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Keying is a fundamental, common, and expensive problem in visual effects. It consists of two subtasks: matte extraction and screen spill removal. Today’s standard keyers often fall short on edge cases including unevenly lit screens, fine detail, and sky replacements. As a result, keying continues to be a laborious process requiring highly trained compositors and complex bespoke setups. Our method does not assume one single saturated screen color, allowing for more versatile workflows. The keyer functions by interpolating over a Delaunay tetrahedralization of user-given sample colors. We evaluate our method relative to the visual effects industry’s standard keyers on a …

K-Mshc: Unmasking Minimally Sufficient Head Circuits In Large Language Models With Experiments On Syntactic Classification Tasks, Pratim Chowdhary, Peter Chin, Deepernab Chakrabarty

Computer Science Senior Theses

Understanding which neural components drive specific capabilities in mid-sized language models ($\leq$10B parameters) remains a key challenge. We introduce the $(\bm{K}, \epsilon)$-Minimum Sufficient Head Circuit ($K$-MSHC), a methodology to identify minimal sets of attention heads crucial for classification tasks as well as Search-K-MSHC, an efficient algorithm for discovering these circuits. Applying our Search-K-MSHC algorithm to Gemma-9B, we analyze three syntactic task families: grammar acceptability, arithmetic verification, and arithmetic word problems. Our findings reveal distinct task-specific head circuits, with grammar tasks predominantly utilizing early layers, word problems showing pronounced activity in both shallow and deep regions, and arithmetic verification demonstrating a …

Evaluating Vision Language Model Capabilities For Time Series Interpretation: An Empirical Study With Conversation Duration And Psychological Flourishing Data From The Studentlife Dataset, Jusung Park Jun 2025

Evaluating Vision Language Model Capabilities For Time Series Interpretation: An Empirical Study With Conversation Duration And Psychological Flourishing Data From The Studentlife Dataset, Jusung Park

Computer Science Senior Theses

This research investigates the capability of Vision Language Models (VLMs), specifically ChatGPT‑4o, to interpret and predict psychological outcomes based on visual representations of time series data. Leveraging conversation duration metrics and psychological flourishing scores from the StudentLife dataset, this study rigorously evaluates the predictive accuracy of VLMs using various methods, including zero‑shot on raw data, zero‑shot on graph data, few‑shot learning, qualitative labeling, and chain‑of‑thought reasoning. Despite multiple methodological enhancements, predictive performance remains modest, revealing significant challenges in quantitative interpretation of visualized temporal data by current multimodal models. We demonstrate that standardizing input tokens by using graph images rather than …

A Steiner Tree Vc Set System In Minor-Free (Di)Graphs, Eli Friedman Jun 2025

A Steiner Tree Vc Set System In Minor-Free (Di)Graphs, Eli Friedman

Computer Science Senior Theses

We propose a set system of maximum-covering minimum-density partial Steiner trees for planar and minor-free graphs. We show that this system has VC dimension at most h-1 for edge-weighted Kh-minor-free graphs, both directed and undirected. We also consider its geometric interpretation as a range space, proving it to be piercing.

In addition, we demonstrate how one can form a junction tree set system of bounded VC dimension from such Steiner trees. This is motivated by refining the junction tree set cover approach used in Chekuri and Jain's polylogarithmic approximation algorithm for Directed Steiner Forest in planar graphs [CJ25].

Character Relationship Prediction In Movies: Toward Emotionally-Aware Automatic Audio Descriptions, Seung Hyun Hahm Jun 2025

Character Relationship Prediction In Movies: Toward Emotionally-Aware Automatic Audio Descriptions, Seung Hyun Hahm

Computer Science Senior Theses

Automatic audio description (AD) systems support visually impaired audiences by narrating visual content, but they often fail to capture the interpersonal dynamics that underpin narrative understanding. In this work, we introduce a novel framework for character relationship prediction as a means of enriching audio descriptions with socially grounded context. Our contributions are threefold: (1) we propose the Character Relationship Module (CRM), which extends identity-aware video captioning with directed sentiment inference between character pairs; (2) we develop a scalable weak supervision pipeline that uses large language models to generate 669,520 relationship annotations across 202 films; and (3) we construct a complementary …

Computer Science Senior Theses

This paper presents a comprehensive implementation

study of an informative path planning (IPP) algorithm

for autonomous water body detection and mapping using

unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). We propose a hybrid IPP

framework that seamlessly integrates Bayesian probabilistic

classification and real-time uncertainty quantification to achieve

superior flight efficiency and mapping accuracy compared

to conventional systematic coverage methods. Our approach

employs the state-of-the-art SegFormer deep learning segmentation

model in conjunction with log-odds-based orthomosaic

generation to produce high-fidelity water body maps under

diverse environmental conditions. Through random sampling of

the FloodNet dataset, we demonstrate that our IPP algorithm

maintains flight distance while achieving …
