A Capstone Review: Bi-Lateral Growth Of Outdoor And Business Skills, Ben Casteel Jun 2025

A Capstone Review: Bi-Lateral Growth Of Outdoor And Business Skills, Ben Casteel

University Honors Theses

This paper explores the development of my leadership skills through the Portland State University School of Business and the Portland State University Outdoor Program. Drawing from my four years as a trip leader and equipment rental center coordinator and my capstone experience with Team Flamingos, the cross-disciplinary business team I was a part of, I examine how both of these experiences have shaped and grown my skills as a leader. In this paper, I analyze leadership competencies such as communication, decision-making, adaptability, and self-awareness, through the National Outdoor Leadership School's 4-7-1 Leadership Model. This model acts as a framework to …

Integrating Explainable Machine Learning And Transcriptomics Data Reveals Cell-Type Specific Immune Signatures Underlying Macular Degeneration, Khang Ma, Hosei Nakajima, Nipa Basak, Arko Barman, Rinki Ratnapriya

Faculty, Staff and Students Publications

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have established key role of immune dysfunction in Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD), though the precise role of immune cells remains unclear. Here, we develop an explainable machine-learning pipeline (ML) using transcriptome data of 453 donor retinas, identifying 81 genes distinguishing AMD from controls (AUC-ROC of 0.80, CI 0.70–0.92). Most of these genes were enriched in their expression within retinal glial cells, particularly microglia and astrocytes. Their role in AMD was further strengthened by cellular deconvolution, which identified distinct differences in microglia and astrocytes between normal and AMD. We corroborated these findings using independent single-cell data, where …

Digital Domination: How Technology Threatens Privacy Rights, Kirsten Zonkowski

NSU Undergraduate Law Journal

This paper examines how rapid technological advancements have outpaced existing legal protections for privacy rights in both the U.S as well as world-wide. By analyzing landmark Supreme Court cases and federal legislation, it highlights the vulnerabilities individuals face from digital surveillance, data mining, and third-party data collection. The paper argues that current legal frameworks are fragmented and outdated, calling for comprehensive reforms. Recommended solutions include adopting federal privacy legislation modeled after the GDPR, passing a constitutional amendment to safeguard digital privacy, and implementing mandatory transparency and accountability measures for technology companies. These reforms are essential to preserving individual freedoms in …

Dormant Commerce Clause: Claiming The Future Of Horse Racing, Alexis Zeron Jun 2025

Dormant Commerce Clause: Claiming The Future Of Horse Racing, Alexis Zeron

Florida Entertainment and Sports Law Review

The Supreme Court described the principles of the dormant Commerce Clause first in Gibbons v. Ogden (1824), coined the doctrine’s name in Willson v. Black-Bird Creek Marsh Co. (1829), and revisited the doctrine after a lengthy period of “dormancy” in National Pork Producers Council v. Ross (2023). Over the nearly two centuries that the Supreme Court has handled dormant Commerce Clause matters, one aspect that stands out is the unique nature of the industries that give rise to claims. Thoroughbred horse racing, a sport older than the United States itself, is one such example. The Supreme Court previously denied certiorari …

Fighting For Their Livelihood: Ufc Fighters Can Improve Conditions Without A Union, Evan Mattel

Florida Entertainment and Sports Law Review

This Article explores the compensation structure and current benefits afforded to UFC fighters, emphasizing the unique challenges and disparities faced in the absence of a collective bargaining agreement. Despite the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s (UFC’s) popularity and revenue, fighter pay still remains a contentious issue as many of the bonuses received by fighters are based on their experience, popularity, and fight performance. This leaves little room for consistent earnings and easy mobility within the organization’s rankings. This Article analyzes the current pay model and investigates the potential impacts of attempting to unionize fighters. By evaluating the current landscape of the UFC …
