Cnes Participation To The Sentinel-2 C Commissioning Phase, Leveraging Synergies Between Vicarious Calibration Methods, Damien Rodat, Valentina Boccia, Camille Desjardins, Arthur Dick, Sebastien Marcq, Aime Meygret

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

The 5th September 2024, Sentinel-2 C has successfully joined its orbit where Sentinel-2 A and B were already in operation since 2015 and 2017 respectively. The Sentinel-2 mission is part of the European Copernicus program, a wide Earth observation program dedicated to the environment monitoring, the mitigation of climate change effects and a support to emergency services. Sentinel-2 handles the high-resolution optical component with an acquisition of the Earth surface in 13 different spectral bands, every 5 days with a spatial resolution between 10 m and 60 m (depending on the band).

The French space agency (CNES) was in charge …

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Early earth science imagers in the reflected solar part of the spectrum relied on a radiance-based SI-traceability path to top-of-atmosphere reflectance. More recent missions tend to use reflectance-based approaches as space-grade diffusers became better understood. The difference between the two approaches will become more important for next generation missions where low-cost, low-mass sensors shift back to a radiance-based approach and lower absolute uncertainties are becoming necessary. Radiance-based retrievals are so named because they rely on the absolute radio-metric calibration of the sensor to determine scene spectral radiance that is converted to reflectance using an assumed solar spectral irradiance model. Reflectance-based …

New Contrast-Based Metrics For Roadway Lighting Design, Amira R. Abouelhamd Jun 2025

New Contrast-Based Metrics For Roadway Lighting Design, Amira R. Abouelhamd

Thesis/ Dissertation Defenses

Roadway lighting standards specify design targets of horizontal illuminance or luminance at the roadway surface for various roadway types. Although the luminance and illuminance method to roadway lighting standards incorporate some factors that affect human visibility, other important factors, such as the target’s contrast and size, are not examined in these standards. Roadway lighting standards should consider how the human visual system detects objects and provides comfortable approaches to improve visibility for drivers. As luminous contrast has a crucial impact on visibility measures, recent studies have been directed to propose new approaches that utilize it. This research aims to propose …

Calibration And Systems Engineering Collaboration, John Wilson Jun 2025

Calibration And Systems Engineering Collaboration, John Wilson

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Systems engineering and calibration engineering are critical to the efficient development, production, and operation of complex systems. Systems engineering provides the framework for the system lifecycle, ensuring stakeholder needs are met through integrated solutions. Calibration engineering ensures the accuracy, reliability, traceability of measurement, and compliance with standards. Coordination between system engineering and calibration ensures that instrumentation, control systems, and system performance are enabled. As the lifecycle coordinator, systems engineering relies on calibration engineers to reduce risks, optimize development, and ensure operational success.

However, the relationship between these disciplines is often poorly coordinated, as noted in tabletop discussions at CALCON 2024. …

Indigenous Entrepreneurs And Their Engagement With The Tax System, Alessandro Bressan, Mattia Anesa Jun 2025

Indigenous Entrepreneurs And Their Engagement With The Tax System, Alessandro Bressan, Mattia Anesa

Talking Heads Seminar Series

Alessandro and Mattia are returning to the Nulungu Research Institute for a research project, mentored by Dr Tarunna Sebastian (Pitjantjatjara/Anmatyerre). Last year they had the opportunity to yarn with local Indigenous entrepreneurs and their accountants/business advisors about perceptions of and engagement with the tax system. Those yarns were conducted primarily in Yawuru and Jukun as well as with Indigenous and non-Indigenous people outside these nations but with lineage and/or experience in the Kimberley. The event will start with an initial presentation summarising the findings from the 2024 visit and continue with a yarning circle. The latter has two main aims: …

No Evidence For Pape-Induced Jumping Performance Enhancement Following Isometric And Treadmill Warm-Ups In Team Sport Athletes, Artur Terbalyan, Adam Maszczyk, Robert Krzysztof Roczniok Jun 2025

No Evidence For Pape-Induced Jumping Performance Enhancement Following Isometric And Treadmill Warm-Ups In Team Sport Athletes, Artur Terbalyan, Adam Maszczyk, Robert Krzysztof Roczniok

Baltic Journal of Health and Physical Activity

Background: This study aimed to determine whether an isometric PAPE‐based warm-up could enhance jumping performance compared to a traditional treadmill jogging warm-up in team sport athletes. The primary focus was on assessing neuromuscular activation and performance indicators such as jump height and force asymmetry. Materials and Methods: Fifty-three athletes from basketball, volleyball, handball, and soccer participated in a controlled, parallel-group experiment. Participants performed either a unilateral isometric warm-up protocol – comprising two sets of four exercises per leg– or a 5‐minute treadmill jogging session, with jump performance assessed via countermovement jump tests on dual force plates. A split-plot ANOVA was …

The Effect Of Functional Training On Dynamic Knee Valgus Of Youth Soccer Players. A Pilot Study, Ole Tovar, Dóra Molnár, Badis Soussi, Ádám Uhlár, Tamás Horváth, Mira Ambrus Jun 2025

The Effect Of Functional Training On Dynamic Knee Valgus Of Youth Soccer Players. A Pilot Study, Ole Tovar, Dóra Molnár, Badis Soussi, Ádám Uhlár, Tamás Horváth, Mira Ambrus

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 18(7): 561-574, 2025. Knee injuries are very common in soccer players. High loads on the knee during landing or changes of direction can lead to a valgus shift of the knee, known as Dynamic Knee Valgus (DKV). Many studies have shown that a large shift in DKV is a predisposing factor for knee injuries and disease, such as anterior cruciate ligament injury (ACL), patellofemoral pain syndrome or osteoarthritis. Functional training could be a great tool to reduce DKV. Thus, in this pilot study, nine male youth soccer players (mean age: 16.4 ± 0.2 years) took …

The Ieee 4001 Standard For Hyperspectral Imaging, Torbjorn Skauli, John R. Gilchrist, Christopher Durell Jun 2025

The Ieee 4001 Standard For Hyperspectral Imaging, Torbjorn Skauli, John R. Gilchrist, Christopher Durell

The Characterization and Radiometric Calibration for Remote Sensing Annual Meeting (CALCON)

Describing the properties and performance of a hyperspectral camera is more complex than for a conventional camera. Still, up to now, hyperspectral cameras have been described largely in the same terms as conventional cameras, which fall short of what is needed to convey the actual performance to users and potential buyers. Responding to this situation, the IEEE Standards Association established a working group in 2018 to develop a new standard for hyperspectral imaging. More than 200 members of the hyperspectral community have taken part in the work, representing users, manufacturers, government labs and academia. This extensive work has resulted in …
