Nitrogen fertilizers are applied to corn fields to support high crop yields, but some nitrogen is lost through microbial denitrification, producing nitrous oxide (N2O), a potent greenhouse gas. Some plants produce certain flavonoids that can suppress microbial denitrification, a trait known as biological denitrification inhibition (BDI). Maize produces flavonoids in the form of anthocyanins, including cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G), the major anthocyanin produced by maize.

Legume-Rhizobia Mutualism: Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth. Plants can’t produce nitrogenous compounds. Rhizobia fix atmospheric nitrogen gas into bioavailable forms. Rhizobia form a nutrient exchange mutualism with leguminous plants.

Project description

Can our bacteria persist within the rhizosphere and into the nodule when faced with native microbial competitors? The Medicago-Sinorhizobium mutualism is used as a model system. Survival of strains post competition is difficult to measure due to identical 16S rRNA sequences and similar marker genes. Plasmid-ID barcoding sequences may provide a way of testing strains against a community.

Furthermore, methods are necessary for quantifying the effect of disease suppression on specific pathogen populations. To do this, it is important to properly identify the pathogens.

Anthropogenic activities and natural processes are responsible for changing the pH of freshwaters which can impact aquatic life. D. dentifera is a keystone species found in midwestern lakes that is susceptible to a parasitic yeast called Australozyma monospora. A. monospora spores puncture the Daphnia gut into the hemolymph and begin using the host’s resources. Invertebrate immunity is under researched.

Salmonella is a leading cause of gastrointestinal diseases globally. It utilizes a type three secretion system (T3SS) encoded on Salmonella Pathogenicity Island 1 (SPI1) to invade host intestinal epithelial cells during infection.

HilE directly regulates HilD via a direct protein-protein interaction. The Slauch lab identified two HilD variants, A141V and A141T, which are blind to HilE. These variants activate hilA expression even in the presence of HilE, indicating that the binding of HilE to these mutants is compromised.

Many arthropods harbor maternally transmitted endosymbionts that manipulate host reproduction to increase their transmission. One such manipulation is cytoplasmic incompatibility (CI), in which embryos produced by infected males and uninfected females fail to develop.

Rickettsiella has recently been discovered to cause CI in Mermessus fradeorum. Two geographically distinct Rickettsiella strains infect this spider: R1 causes strong CI, whereas R2 causes weaker CI.

Hypothesis: H1: Both Rickettsiella strains will localize within or near developing sperm cells in the testes. H2: The stronger R1 strain will exhibit more consistent localization within infected adult reproductive tissues than the weaker R2 strain.

This study evaluates the climatic credibility of a newly identified historical rainfall dataset for New Orleans, Louisiana, spanning 1840–1893. The New Orleans Historical Dataset (NOHD) is compared to a modern observational record from the Audubon rain gauge (1893–2024) to determine whether nineteenth-century rainfall observations are consistent with known precipitation behavior in the region. Establishing the reliability of early records is critical for extending climatological baselines and improving understanding of long-term rainfall variability.

This study examines the effects of bank-specific characteristics and macroeconomic variables on the intermediation function of KBMI 4 banks in Indonesia during 2014–2023. The variables include NPL, BOPO, CAR, bank size, ROA, GDP, BI Rate, and pandemic and recovery dummies. Secondary data from four KBMI 4 banks were analyzed using a panel-data Fixed Effect Model. The results show that NPL has a negative effect, while BOPO, CAR, ROA, GDP, and BI Rate have significantly positive effects on LDR. Bank size is insignificant. The pandemic and recovery dummies reduce LDR by 10.43 percent and 10.33 percent, respectively.

Program Indonesia Pintar (PIP) is a Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) provided by the government to improve access for poor students aged 6–21 years and prevent school dropout. The dropout rate (APTS) at the Senior High School (SMA) level is the highest among levels. Although SMA management was delegated to provincial governments in 2017, examining PIP’s effect at the district/city level remains important because PIP involves central and local governments and schools. This study uses a Fixed Effect method with panel data from 514 districts/cities during 2020–2022. Results show that PIP has no significant effect on APTS at SMA level.

Indonesia’s economic challenges are characterized by stagnant economic growth and regional development disparities. This study analyzes the achievement and convergence of infrastructure development across provinces in Indonesia during 2011–2021 through the construction of an Infrastructure Development Index (IPI). The study employs panel data from 33 provinces, using factor analysis to construct the IPI and the First Difference Generalized Method of Moments (FD-GMM) to examine convergence and its determinants. The results show that many provinces still have IDI scores below the national average. Furthermore, the FD-GMM model shows that σ-convergence and β-convergence occur in Indonesia. Digitalization has become a key pillar in driving economic, social, and governance transformation in Indonesia. However, it is necessary to verify whether digitalization has supported sustainable development goals. This study evaluates the impact of digitalization on sustainability dimensions at the district/city level in Indonesia using the Propensity Score Matching (PSM). The results show that digitalization has a significant negative impact on environmental quality. Conversely, the impact on the economy and social welfare is not statistically significant, indicating that the benefits of digitalization are not evenly distributed and tend to be concentrated among groups that already have digital access and capabilities.

Drawing on the 2018/2019 Nigeria General Household Survey — a nationally representative sample of 5,000 households across six geopolitical zones obtained using multi-stage stratified sampling — this study applied linear probability and probit models to examine poverty’s socioeconomic drivers. Findings show food insecurity and economic shocks worsen poverty, while remittances, credit access, employment, safety nets, and education help reduce it. Using poverty indices and the Gini coefficient, the analysis found rural households face greater poverty incidence, depth, and severity than urban households, despite urban areas showing marginally higher income inequality. This study aimed to examine the relationship between career planning and academic success among undergraduate students in the German Language Education Study Program at Universitas Negeri Malang. A quantitative correlational design was employed. From a population of 335 students, a total of 126 respondents who met the research criteria and completed the questionnaire were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected using a five-point Likert-scale questionnaire and analyzed through descriptive statistics, the Kolmogorov–Smirnov normality test, and Spearman’s rank-order correlation (ρ). The results revealed a statistically significant positive relationship between career planning and academic success (ρ = .527, p < .001). Students who demonstrated more active career exploration, greater self-understanding, clearer career goals, and better utilization of academic and social support tended to achieve higher academic performance, as reflected in a cumulative grade point average (GPA) above 3.00. Nevertheless, the findings also indicate that students’ career readiness still requires further development. This is reflected in their predominant use of general job-search platforms and the relatively limited participation in career development activities. Therefore, higher education institutions should strengthen career guidance services by providing more systematic career information, expanding access to career development programs, and integrating career services into the academic learning process to better prepare students for the labor market.
