Accurate Crop Yield Prediction Via Temporal Convolutional Network And Variational Autoencoder, Lei Liu, Xiaoling Song

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

With the advancement of technology, smart agriculture assumes a pivotal role in enhancing the efficiency and sustainability of agricultural production. Nevertheless, accurately forecasting crop yields and understanding their determining factors often faces limitations inherent in conventional data processing techniques. To address this challenge, this study proposes a TCN-VAE framework, amalgamating temporal convolutional networks (TCNs) and variational autoencoders (VAEs), to tackle the crop yield prediction task in smart agricultural systems. The framework intricately models four principal categories of features—meteorological conditions, soil conditions, agricultural management, and environmental conditions—via TCN and compensates for missing data using VAE, thereby achieving a comprehensive analysis and …

Intraspecific Competition Can Promote Population-Level Specialization, Abdel H. Halloway Jun 2025

Intraspecific Competition Can Promote Population-Level Specialization, Abdel H. Halloway

Faculty Scholarship

The hypothesis of competitive diversification asserts that increased intraspecific competition will cause a population to generalize in resource use. The reasoning is that as preferred resources are depleted, individuals which use alternative resources become more fit, leading to an overall broadening of resource use. However, recent studies have shown instances of the opposite effect: increased intraspecific competition leading to increased population resource specialization. We explored how intraspecific competition could affect population resource specialization by creating an evolutionary game theoretic consumer-resource model in which individuals have both resource use preference and resource use breadth which are flexible and adaptable. Using this …

The Clean Water Act And Avoidance Creep, Jack H.L. Whiteley Jun 2025

The Clean Water Act And Avoidance Creep, Jack H.L. Whiteley

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

In Sackett v. EPA, the Supreme Court set out a test for the Clean Water Act’s jurisdiction over wetlands. The Act, the Court held, protects only those wetlands that have a continuous surface connection to relatively permanent bodies of water like streams, rivers, and lakes. If the connection lies below the surface, or is at the surface but discontinuous, the wetlands are presumed to fall outside the Act’s protections. The ruling, which abruptly curtailed how each administration since the 1970s had understood the Clean Water Act’s jurisdiction, has generated persuasive criticism from environmental scholars. In this Essay, prepared for the …

Additionally, training large language models (LLMs) for AI consumes substantial energy and can enable autonomous warfare, posing a threat to eco-justice, and raising sustainability concerns. Their ability to create realistic content poses the risk of misuse and perpetuating misinformation. This article addresses these ethical issues and presents solutions through regulation and technology, with examples of …

The Impact Of Loper Bright V. Raimondo: An Empirical Review Of The First Six Months, Robin Kundis Craig Jun 2025

The Impact Of Loper Bright V. Raimondo: An Empirical Review Of The First Six Months, Robin Kundis Craig

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

One of the most impactful decisions of the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2023–2024 term was Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo, which overruled the forty-year-old administrative law doctrine of Chevron deference. This doctrine allowed federal agencies to interpret ambiguities in the statutes that they administer. Courts cited Chevron over 18,000 times in its forty-year existence, or roughly 450 times a year—more than once a day, on average. Small wonder, then, that in the first six months after the Supreme Court decided Loper Bright, courts cited it more than 400 times. This article provides an empirical review of what courts are doing with …

Water Flowing Down Wall Street, Vanessa Casado Pérez Jun 2025

Water Flowing Down Wall Street, Vanessa Casado Pérez

Minnesota Law Review Vols. 106:2 onward (2021-present)

Water scarcity is a perennial problem with dire consequences for the United States and governments around the world. A lack of adequate water resources is a systematic cause of environmental harm, economic damage, and societal division. Climate change has exacerbated these problems making water even more valuable and essential. Financial actors have turned water into the new oil. These large financial actors profiteer from buying and selling water without any interest in its actual use as an input of production. Instead, they typically seek to hold these rights until dire situations, like droughts and fires, cause temporary, but large, spikes …

Evolution Of Wormholes Under F(R, T) Theory, The Karmarkar Condition And The Casimir Energy, Murat Metehan Türkoğlu

Turkish Journal of Physics

In this study, both the evolution of wormholes (by examining both the energy conditions and using the TOV equations) and the effects of the Karmarkar condition on the solutions obtained under certain specific cases were examined in the light of the f(R, T) gravity theory, using two f(R, T) functions predicted to describe the accelerated expansion of the universe. In this context, for the first time in the literature, a generalized shape function was obtained using the Karmarkar condition. It was observed that solutions of the type R -a12/R+a2g(T) satisfy the energy conditions (with the dominant energy condition being partially …

Circular Motion And Thermodynamic Characteristics Of Particles Around A Quintessential Nonrotating Black Hole, Indrajit Halder, Kamal Lochan Mahanta, Rakesh Ranjan Sahoo Jun 2025

Circular Motion And Thermodynamic Characteristics Of Particles Around A Quintessential Nonrotating Black Hole, Indrajit Halder, Kamal Lochan Mahanta, Rakesh Ranjan Sahoo

Turkish Journal of Physics

This paper investigates the geodesics of the Schwarzschild black hole modified with the quintessence field and modeled as a barotropic fluid with a constant equation of state derived in Boyer Lindquist coordinates with natural units G = c = 1. Hamilton–Jacobi formalization is applied to investigate the geodesics in both static and nonstatic black hole spacetime. It specifically examines the formation of bound orbits of test particles around the black hole, highlighting that these orbits result from the interplay between the gravitational pull of the black hole and a repulsive force associated with quintessence. The thermodynamic properties of a black …
