Although there is consensus in the need to address the causes of climate change, very little attention has been done to implementing large scale strategies to produce behavioral change in the community to reduce greenhouse emissions. We conducted a study among college students, to evaluate their behavioral change towards a plant based diet after reflecting in the environmental effect in greenhouse emissions of animal protein consumption. During a two weeks’ period participants were required to keep a diary of the food items and meat servings they consumed, and to calculate the carbon footprint of their diet. On the second week …

The foundation of sustainability and improving a system is to first understand its components. Waste management is a vastly complex issue, with an increasing number of material types and ever-changing regulations. Sorting and processing refuse is a fundamental aspect of society that often goes unmeasured due to its complex nature. To grow sustainably, it is imperative to classify, categorize, and quantify the waste we create daily. This study builds upon existing on-campus large-scale waste audits conducted by EDCO, the California State University San Marcos (CSUSM) waste hauler, which quantifies the amount and types of waste removed from campus. Centering Environmental Justice And Sustainability In Deij Values, Heather F. Clark, Ellie Perry
CSU Journal of Sustainability and Climate Change
In this article we articulate a framework for understanding sustainability and environmental justice as part of diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice (DEIJ) values in higher education. Examining our campus’ vision and history, we illustrate how a commitment to environmental justice is part and parcel to supporting educational equity and social justice at a model urban university. This framework highlights how ignoring environmental concerns limits our collective potentially to support DEIJ goals, and how centering sustainability concerns can strengthen DEIJ efforts in higher education. We argue that achieving social and educational justice is only possible if environmental justice is also pursued.

The implementation of renewable energy is widely recognized for its positive impact on human health and well-being. We propose methods to quantify these benefits by estimating each renewable energy plant’s impact on human mortality and climate-induced displacement. Utilizing established models (DICE, Mortality Cost of Carbon, and methods from Lenton and Xu), we calculate the avoided heat-related mortalities and loss of human climate niche attributable to avoided CO₂ emissions from renewable energy. Applying this methodology to three California clean energy projects—Morro Bay Wind Energy Area (WEA), Morro Bay Battery Energy Storage System (BESS), and American Energy Services (AES) Bellefield Solar Farm—demonstrates …

California State University Bakersfield (CSUB) is the only campus in the U.S. that has supported an endangered canine species on its campus grounds for many decades. Deprived of its prime habitat, open grassland, the San Joaquin kit fox (SJKF) (Vulpes macrotis mutica) was able to adapt to urban areas in the San Joaquin Valley of California. The presence of an endangered species on campus grounds comes with responsibilities and requires knowledge of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). This study explores the different challenges and success factors women ex-offenders face during their reintegration into society after being incarcerated. With the help of 11 women on parole and probation in Baguio City from interviews, the researchers were able to examine their experiences and perspectives. Superordinate themes emerged, namely Reintegration Struggles and Societal Rejection, Resilience Through Support Systems, and Stigma and Social Exclusion. The results indicate the personal, societal, and structural barriers that women offenders face upon reintegration. Additionally, the successful reintegration of women offenders is influenced by both internal and external support systems, personal motivation, and spiritual guidance. A …

Water pollution threatens public health and the environment, particularly in developing counties. Estero de Balete in Manila, Philippines, a tributary of the Pasig River, is affected by heavy metal contamination, murky water, and highly acidic water. This study examines Moringa oleifera-enhanced Bokashi balls for bioremediation purposes. The Bokashi balls were prepared with effective microorganisms (EM-1), molasses, rice hulls, and garden clay soil, incorporating varying concentrations of Moringa oleifera seed powder and pods (0.10 g, 0.25 g, and 0.40 g) in comparison to a control setup. TikTok and Instagram have become global platforms being used by influencers, particularly those from Generation Z, to engage audiences in lifestyle content. Among these are Lasallian students who experience the complexities of authenticity while still following the values of De La Salle University-Manila. This study explores how Lasallian influencers balance their idealized online image and their identity, moral responsibilities, and the psycho-emotional impacts of content creation. This study examined Filipino parentification among eldest children enrolled as senior high school students at De La Salle University - Dasmariñas, focusing on its impact on friendships. Grounded in Role Theory and Attachment Theory, it explored how premature parental responsibilities shape social interactions using a qualitative phenomenological approach with semi-structured interviews. Findings indicate that eldest children often assume caregiving, emotional support, and decision-making roles, fostering maturity and resilience, but also leading to trust issues, emotional distancing, and difficulties in maintaining friendships.
