"A Small Victory In A Battle That Should Have Not Been Necessary": Rebecca Flores And The Struggle For Field Sanitation In The Rio Grande Valley Of Texas, Brent M.S. Campney
Journal of Texas History
This study examines the struggle for field sanitation in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, where it was waged in the late 1970s and early 1980s by United Farm Workers director Rebecca Flores and her allies. The first section examines the harsh living and working conditions experienced by farm workers there. The second provides a brief biographical sketch of Flores, a daughter of farm workers, from her years as a college student to her role as the leader of the Texas UFW. The third examines the struggle for field sanitation by Flores and the UFW, their success in changing state …

Denton's Pioneer Woman Statue: Patriarchy, Public Memory, And The Texas Centennial Of 1936, Light Townsend Cummins
Journal of Texas History
This essay surveys the national Pioneer Woman statue movement of the early twentieth century to set the statue in Denton into historical context while it analyzes the explosive, nationwide controversy occasioned by the 1936 Texas Centennial’s proposal to place an unclothed pioneer woman sculpture at Texas Woman’s University. It provides a Texas case study with national implications regarding how widely held genderized viewpoints in cultural memories during the 1930s influenced public art. It recounts what can happen when those memory-based expectations fail to be met, while it also indicates how the historical memories underpinning commemorative public statuary can change over …

"Militant Attitudes" And "Superficial Expressions Of Goodwill": Politics Of Inclusion In Texas Pan Americanism, Leslie N. Torres
Journal of Texas History
Shocked, Florence T. Griswold opened the December 3, 1939, edition of the newspaper La Prensa to find her private correspondence published, and her international collective, the Pan American Round Tables of Texas, outwardly discredited in a scathing article. The editorial author, Alonso S. Perales, a renowned Mexican American civil rights activist, publicly disavowed Griswold, her organization, and meaningless support and allyships from Pan Americanist groups entirely. This article details the rise of inclusion politics amongst Mexican American activists and Anglo American reformers, and illuminates the tensions rooted in ideological hemispheric unity developed amidst racial subjugation in early twentieth-century Texas.

Adolescents often face the critical task of making informed decisions, particularly when choosing a senior high school strand and college course—decisions that significantly impact their future careers. Despite the importance of these choices, there is a noticeable gap in existing literature on adolescents' cognitive flexibility and decision-making abilities, as most studies have focused on adult populations in Western contexts. This study sought to address that gap by examining the relationship between cognitive flexibility and decision-making skills among Grade 10 students at Theresian School of Cavite. Quantitative results revealed a moderately positive correlation between cognitive flexibility and decision-making, suggesting that students …

Visual aids are vital components of disaster risk reduction as these actively disseminate important information on preparedness and responses in disasters. However, given that no established standard for effective visual aids is present in the Philippines, information is at risk of being misinterpreted or misunderstood. The research aims to determine the effectiveness of visual aids in disaster risk reduction (DRR) in the setting of academic institutions in the Philippines. Specifically, it finds interactive-based and interactional-based elements across different institutions, and evaluates them according to international standards. A total of nineteen (19) publicly-sourced posters—published by five (5) select academic institutions—were used …

Student engagement has changed as a result of blended learning, a learning modality that combines in-person instruction with online course delivery. Beyond the models that are frequently studied, engagement in other blended learning environments must be examined using a clearly defined framework; hence, this study aims to address this gap. This study compared and measured the basic psychological needs and engagement levels of two student populations, enriched virtual blended learning and traditional face-to-face learning, using the Self-Determination Theory as a framework. 115 senior high school students participated in the data collection process; 39 used the enriched virtual model, and 76 …

Biofilms, ubiquitous microbial communities encased in a self-produced matrix, pose a significant threat to human health, industrial processes, and food safety. While synthetic antimicrobials are widely used, concerns about resistance and environmental impact drive the search for natural alternatives. Guyabano (Annona muricata), a tropical fruit known for its antimicrobial properties, shows potential as a natural antibiofilm agent. This study aimed to compare the impact of three different maceration extraction methods (aqueous, ethanolic, and methanolic) on the antibiofilm efficacy of A. muricata leaf extract against Bacillus subtilis biofilm. Each extract was subjected to a 96-well microplate biofilm inhibition assay, …

Parental expectations significantly shape adolescents' emotional well-being and self-perception, especially in Philippine culture, where family honor and obligations are expected. Perceived parental disappointment can lead to emotional distress, anxiety, and self-doubt, affecting self-esteem and personal development. While much of the existing research focuses on parental perspectives, there is little research and understanding of how adolescents internalize these experiences. This study examines the narratives of Filipino adolescents on perceived parental disappointment, highlighting its emotional and psychological effects. This study utilized interviews in order to collect the lived experiences of Filipino adolescents aged 18-19, residing in Binan and Sta. Rosa, Laguna. Through …

DLSU Senior High School Research Congress
Queer representation in Philippine cinema has long been shaped by stereotypes, silences, and rigid societal norms. This limited portrayal discourages media creators from exploring diverse queer narratives, perpetuating one-dimensional depictions and reinforcing societal prejudice. This study examines 2 Cool 2 Be 4gotten, a coming-of-age film set in post-Pinatubo Pampanga, through a queer and intersectional lens, utilizing Herman’s Basic Elements of Narrative—situatedness, worldmaking, event sequencing, and “what it’s like”—as the analytical framework. Using qualitative film analysis and thematic content analysis, the researchers carefully coded scenes to explore how queer identity intersects with gender, age, class, and emotional experiences, and how these …

The prevalence of the K-pop industry’s globalization has risen over time, using the digital age to expand its presence in the market. Understanding the factors influencing the consumption patterns and parasocial relationships fans experience brings awareness to the possible causes of fixation in the K-pop industry’s capitalization. However, research about the Weverse app as a medium for capitalizing on parasocial relationships among adolescent Filipino K-pop fans is limited. This study’s objective is to investigate the commercialization of parasocial relationships between adolescent Filipino fans and their male idols through the Weverse application. Data were gathered through a Focus Group Discussion and …

Music promotion is often overlooked by aspiring musicians despite its importance in building an audience and creating an identity. This is especially true for independent musicians, who must either consult with promoters or create promotional materials themselves. The COVID-19 pandemic affected many sectors of the music industry and has marked a greater shift in promotion methods, encouraging a more digital approach to promotion. The study aims to look into the methods that independent musicians in Sta. Rosa use to promote their music after the pandemic. This also includes exploring the effects of the pandemic on these methods and the differences …

Complex challenges in parking have been prevalent in metropolitan areas all over the world due to factors such as inefficient use of spaces, and rapid urbanization; this then has an effect towards worse traffic conditions, and possible environmental issues. While traditional efforts such as increasing parking infrastructure have been done, this study aims to focus on the development of a smart parking reservation system that integrates camera-based software for enhanced parking management. With the use of CCTV camera technology, the detection system was tested under different lighting scenarios to evaluate the system’s efficiency in terms of accuracy and consistency. Done …
